> Alex Kurtzman Planning a New Star Trek Animated Series
> Development on any further Star Trek films appears to have stalled, but the franchise continues to prosper on CBS All Access. Apart from current titles, the network is planning to extend its reach beyond the live-action realm. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Alex Kurtzman revealed that another animated Star Trek series is in the works for the streaming service.
> “Our goal is to not only expand the definition of Star Trek and what has qualified as traditional Star Trek, but also to tell stories that are both self-contained in a very short period of time that also connect to the larger picture of what we’re doing, not only in Discovery but in the world building of Trek in general,” Kurtzman said. “And you get to tell these very intimate, emotional stories that are side stories to characters. So you get the benefit of the experience in and of itself but then when you watch Discovery you’ll see that these were all setting up things in the world of season two.”
> Kurtzman didn’t share any specifics about the new cartoon. But when it launches, it will be CBS All Access’ second animated venture after Mike McMahan’s (Rick and Morty) Star Trek: Lower Decks. That series offers a comedic take on the adventures of a Starfleet vessel’s support crew. “[Lower Decks] is totally different from anything we’re doing on any of these other shows and we decided to tell that story and make those people the heroes,” Kurtzman explained. He also indicated that additional animated shows are possible down the line. However, he insists that “each show has to have its own identity.”

Bad Robot is desperate, the Kelvin timeline is done, the 4th movie has been cancelled.
STD is on its final season, nobody subscribed to CBS All Access to watch the Short Treks.

To be fair, there have been a number of animated series pitches to CBS/Paramount over the years, and almost all of them have been rejected.
A new animated series would be interesting. Also, a Star Trek comedy series has been pitched before by none other than Gene Roddenberry. He wanted to make a sitcom series staring Lwaxana Troi as the main character (yes, played by Majel Barrett).
Considering we've seen maybe 3-4 episodes in the entirety of Star Trek which focussed on minor crew members, this would be an interesting concept. However, there are a lot of questions. If Kurtzman is the showrunner for this, I'm hoping he has little creative input into this. Next, I hope they don't set it around the same era as Discovery. Late 24th or even 25th Century would allow it to fit into the weird legal thing of not resembling any of the existing TV series, while not having to deal with retconning things for the sake of retconning (retconning is fine when done well, it's far more problematic, when it is done for little other reason than for contractual obligation).
As for writers… Simon Pegg was a great writer for Star Trek Beyond, the only good film in the "JJ-Verse" in my opinion. Someone who loves Star Trek and knows a great deal about it would have been great. Unfortunately, the only comedy guy I can think of who loves Star Trek and would be great for an animated series already has a Star Trek like series on Fox…. So much for Ensign Rivers saving the day…

You should do the opposite and get them to commission R34 like Andy Pitchford had to do with Blunderborn.

OK, I'm calling it, this will be a tedious, slice of life, sitcom starring a crew of 75 teenagers with 75 different (and not real) gender identities - all of whom are described as geniuses. The main antagonist will be Straight White Klingons, and the Prime Directive will be rewritten to "Liberate all planets from the oppression of the evil cis-het-huwite-mayo-patreonarchy, no matter the cost".

This. The only way to make a good Star Trek show is to have it in the Swoleverse.
