>CBS All Access has set phasers to funny with the announcement today that they’ve given a two-season commitment to Star Trek: Lower Decks, an animated comedy from Emmy Award-winner Mike McMahan. The show, which will be produced by CBS Eye Animation Productions, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment, will follow the support crew serving on one of Starfleet’s least-important ships. CBS Eye Animation Productions is CBS Television Studios’ new animation arm.
>Alex Kurtzman and Heather Kadin of Secret Hideout and Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth and Katie Krentz of Roddenberry Entertainment will serve as executive producers alongside McMahan, who is best known for Rick and Morty and has written the upcoming Harry Mudd-centric installment of Star Trek: Short Treks. Aaron Baiers, who brought McMahan to the project, will serve as a co-executive producer.
>Kurtzman
>some guy who has only done a small handful of things, one of the Rick and Morty
>animated Trek comedy
Oh boy, I can't wait for this to be absolutely shit.

>guise, we need an answer to the orville
i have no idea how to approach this from a shitposting perspective. im stumped and maybe that's the point. Obviously, nobody there takes Star Trek seriously, but now it's literally a joke.
At least we know now that Trek will not be saved by Moonves being out. It's worse. It affirms that literally nobody there cares about Star Trek. It's just a product to them and from a widget-making corporate perspective, they need an "answer" to The Orville.

it just occurred to me that when this cartoon happens, both sides will be making a show that exists because they wish they were doing what the other side is doing. Seth wanted to revive Star Trek and play it straight and the nuTrek soys wanted to mock nerds and break their toys in front of their faces out of spite and self-loathing (whilst hitting the occasional dramatic note that demonstrated that they could make a serious show if they wanted to). This is straight out of that classic misogyny pasta where the fundamental nature of women is distilled down to seeing men having fun and wanting to just go over and ruin it. I think the nuTrek soys took the scalps of Trek fans, took a victory lap, then got super pissed when they looked over and saw The Orville happening and it was a bright, happy show and fans were having a good time with it. The whole time they thought they were the ones having fun mocking Star Trek and the Trek nerds were supposed to be miserable.

Most of the time that's true to almost all businesses, if you're lucky someone with enough power or connections actually cares about said widgets. Otherwise welcome to the nu-age of the creatively bankrupt trying to hide behind post-modernism and nihilism.

No clue as of yet, but I'm not hoping for anything better than Calarts. I did think for a sec they might emulate a more Rick and Mortyish style, but my conspiracy theory is that it would be a bit too similar to Seth's animated series and they want to avoid that out of spite. Maybe they'll get those two faggots who made Avatar: The Legend of Aang (and then fucked up their legacy by making Korra) but that would actually look nice and we can't have that.

Fuck, I've been saying for years that more animated Trek could be good, since it's a fertile medium and all that. Now that it's actually here and helmed by Pickle Rick and (probably) featuring awful, sterile CalArts animation…god damn it, I was wrong, now is not the time for this shit.
Promising at least that it'll focus on the lower decks - in addition to fucking up the canon less, that's a concept that ought to have been explored already.
Really depends on a lot of factors, like how much they let Current Year political shit influence it, when it takes place, whether it's prime timeline, etc.
Probably won't be worse than Discovery, at least.

I think I figured it out now, the cycle of a franchise.
1. Franchise starter, often novel idea or concept, gets things rolling. If somewhat successful proceed to step 2.
2. New and often bold perspective on the franchise, can be good (NG) or not so good (SW prequels).
3. Vulture time. Low talent or budget grabs hold of franchise, because the franchise is popular and productions are low risk, the little new content it produces is in contrast to history or lore of the predecessors
4. Comedy. Franchise has been run into the ground. "Funny" shows use it's carcass as a setting. Jokes and character are the usual generic shit just in this setting.
5. Zombie state. People either hate the franchise or don't care anymore. Small but elite group of loyalists, hang on by rewatching stage 1 / 2 content, but in reality they just bear witness to the decay. They probably hang out on some obsucure website.
6. ???
Does this sound right?

3. Would imply shows after Next Gen were low talent budget grabs
4. Is oddly specific to the point where I can't think of any examples
5. Zombie State and Vulture time are typically concurrent (STD)
7. Profit
needs some work, solid foundation though.

Zombie sounds bad, but in all fairness, I'm a fan of a property in this stage, and I'd be lying if I said it wasn't pretty comfy. The reboot failed, the 'comedy' came and went… the stuff I like remains, and the few people who are still around are awesome.

So like Orville except shit and made by SJW hollyweird bubble-dwellers, dank meemsters from le reddits, and some Christopher Tolkien-equivalent who'd rather just keep cashing royalty checks than let the franchise die with dignity, rather than by neolib bubble-dwellers. No, you're forgetting the unfunny cancerous shitcom formula of having celebrity guest stars on and the fact that Patrick Stewart would read anything and act in almost anything up to and including the fucking Turdburglar Diaries if you gave him enough shiny latinum. Also the fact that to modern "writers" (IE, rainbow-haired bunselves who sucked off the producers), worldbuilding consists of tying all the important/mysterious plotlines together in a way many thousands of times lamer and more cliched than people pictured it being and/or the theories the writers trash, thar are from the EU or the few remaining real fans that they ignore the fuck out of or failing that, belittle and insult the fuck out of with their hackneyed volley-fired stock insults about nerds with el-oh-el no lives.

Yep, CalFarts only exists as futile attempt to stop people from making porn out of their franchise because then they think they might sell fewer toys or something (MLP has demonstrated how wrong they are but they've still got their heads up their asses). They tried to make the characters unlikeable and unfuckable (Slappy Squirrel) with Animaniacs so when that failed to stop the furfags they looked at the derth of Rocky and Bullwinkle 34 and decided to try drawing everything after that like runny dogshit. What they don't realize is that Animaniacs sorta worked because they had a 'lighting rod' character to draw 90% of the fire (Minerva Mink when Hello Nurse didn't take).

No bully, it's Dark Shadows, the show from the 60s. It's basically a soap opera in a world where sorcery, vampires and werewolves and stuff is real. There was a reboot in the 90s that didn't go anywhere, and Johnny Depp tried the comedy version about ten years ago… and I don't care about any of it, I love my original batshit monster show.
It's on Amazon Prime if you want to give it a go, just be forgiving. The special effects aren't the best, and you'll see a lot of mic shadows, but it'll give all its got to entertain you.
