76b7ce No.24796 [View All]

I never got the chance to really watch DS9 i remember like 5 episodes I watched these where:

<The one with the gambling aliens who teleport the officers into a game

<The planet of the warriors who fight and never die

<Lots of Ferengi episodes

<The holodeck episode where Sisko as a fictional James Bond like character gambles to prevent his death (the safeties where of) and talked to this James Bond like villain that he is on his sides and preses the button on his dooms day weapon to destroy the (fictional holodect) world. This pauses the villain and the rest of the crew has time to rescue Sisko

<The trip to Risa episode

<Some dominion episodes

So I decided to watch it from start to finish.

I was thinking S1 will be boring like watching paint dry.

There are some crazy episodes in S1 however its a handful of good episodes between mediocre ones.

I'm in S2 and the mix is some hood between loads of pointless and even boring ones.

Why are there so many episodes that are simply boring or uneventful.

02x10 Sanctuary

looks ok and is entertaining to watch however what even was the point of this episode?

Some aliens show up, they can not be understood by the universal translator (this could be a great idea for a episode however the translator translates them on its own = waisted opportunity).

The aliens are different.

These aliens are nasty.

They delude themselves based on some stupid old prophesy that Bajor is their homeland or place to go or something.

They want to go to Bajor.

Bajorans say NO.

one kid steals a shuttle or something for a unknown reason the shuttle has some defects and he explodes himself over Bajor on accidence.

The episode ends.

There are to many inconsequential episodes that are simply boring or even pointless.

And the show lives up to its name of being like watching paint dry.

DS9 lacks any high fiction (time travel, parallel episodes, really strange things) something that was often from the start in other series and something I like to watch even in other shows. Give me more Q, more time travel more holodeck malfunction episodes.

For a show that was supposed to be a long time story driven adventure it seriously lacks the long and story part from S1 and even into S2.

All important story events are about in 4 episodes and the other ones are simply boring.

I will keep this thread updated as I watch DS9.

If someone knows or has a list of what episodes to skip I appreciate it.

>databased!

By the dictionary definition even a paper notebook is a database if the data is organized.

Its basically 1 HTML file where i write everything in (pictures tags) that uses data-tables a JS framework. Its not different from a word file only it works in every browser and its HTML.

Did not one of you comment on the functionality like hover to reveled spoilers and hover over tag to see why the episode was tagged?

In another question how can you recall all Dax relevant episodes of DS9? For example. All I need to is click on one column.

PS: I'm contractually tinkering with the format and I was thinking on overloading (the word hack would be appropriate the word is overused) the search functionality (datatables has a build in search functionality if you did not know) to basically use it to only show one tag so ican see in what seasons and episodes this tag was most predominant.

To accomplish this i simply add a "special" tag at the end who will contain one field that will hold the names of all tags in a row thereby allowing my to make a search based on this criteria and narrow my database down. Because its a "special" column i will add it at the end and shrink the text down(at best to nothing) as not to expand the length of columns.

What do you think about this?

>your autism is an inspiratio

Did no one want to have such functionality? How do you remember episodes related to ferengi or Dax etc or the dominion?

The process I use is not more complicated then someone writing a post here.

OP here thanks for the answer.

Its really nice to know I'm not the only one one a counter question.

In what do you write this down?

is is a TXT file or some word document (to get the table look)?

And would you be interested in using my method?

Because I was thinking about recording it in a TXT file etc however then I searched how to get some datatable action so I can sort the best rated episodes of the series or season or to see all Garak episodes or Holodoctor episodes.

OP Here I decided to update everyone

S1 was fun with its silly ideas.

S2 was watching paint dry for the most part

I'm in S3 and things got interesting with the Dominion.

Good episodes overall.

However the writers decided to inject a boring episode named Meridian

Its a 2 stories in 1 episode (I should start tagging this) and perfect for demonstrating my workflow.

Needless to say I feel like a KBG agent tagging things that are in these episodes especially that I decided to tag Odos interest in food and cooking. You really feel like a KGB agent writing things like

>Garak implies that he and Dukat have history also with Dukat's father. is this real or only Cardassian subversive talk?

Complete with time codes!

You also notice that this episode Meridian perfectly demonstrates a couple of things:

1) I often copy past the same report under multiple tags (look at the Economy and Anti-Communism where I simply copy pasted the same observation)

2) There is a category that translate to "Distinguished otherwise" for most episodes its empty however in Meridian it is filled with

>This one episode where Quork tries to holo scan Kira with multiple scams and tricks.

>in this episode we see Quorks head on Kiras body in a implied sexual holo program, this is a trick from Kira to punish Quork.

Complete with time code of the event!

Because how else would you remember

<What is the episode where Quork did have his head on Kiras body?

See the database is extremely useful.

The other thing is that I mark spoilers and I marked with inviability and only if you hover over them you will see the spoiler.

Without further talk here is my entry for "Meridian" translated by google translate.

!!! Warning wall of text inbound !!!

OP here with another update.

So I'm at "The Die Is Cast" and I have to say DS9 is getting better (S2 did have some real boring episodes while the episodes in S1 where at least silly in their absurdity to watch) the recent episodes did have a good score:

>Improbable Cause

88%

>Through the Looking Glass

90%

I like me some Mirror universe

>Distant Voices

95%

This is why I love Trek the often dream, parallel universe, insanity episodes.

>Visionary

90%

I like these kind of episodes.

>Prophet Motive

96%

Ferengi + my favorite topic = best episode.

>Destiny

82%

However in some DS9 episodes there is a stiffens like there is something needed to get the ball rolling fluidly. To fully explore the topic.

For example one of my favorite Stargate SG1 episodes is "Window of Opportunity" they really explored the implications of a time loop.

Everything in that episode flowed and fas fluid and I'm not even talking about the MEME-tastic moments everyone remembers

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMBNJ1A_CjI

However they where good.

Its like DS9 lacs some gees to get the ball rolling.

File: aaa9b6cc796110a⋯.jpg (149.69 KB,1280x720,16:9,Sisko fights for frindship.jpg)

OP here I finished "The Die Is Cast"and its a good episode however I think I dump here the biggest problem I have with the crew of DS9.

This episode demonstrates the problem.

I think practically every character in DS9 is like this and Sisko embodies this problem.

What is the best way to explain this Sisko operates near comically on the basis of what is Téa Gardner from Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged http://ygotas.wikia.com/wiki/T%C3%A9a_Gardner reasoning. Or if this is to obscure for you Sisko behaves like he is a my little pony from friendship is magic only 100% logically to its brutal conclusion in a universe that is semi realistic.

Siskos prime function or motto is "Friendship is magic" this is his prime reasoning and basis in everything.

The episode is a great example:

Why is Sisko going ageists 2 direct orders?

>Because he wants to save Odo.

Why is Saving Odo so important?

>Because Odo is Siskos friend (actually Odo is some extremely autistic jackass who harasses Quork on the station that Sisko controls however that constitutes friendship for Sisko).

Why is Sisko willing to risk dragging the federation into the war with the Dominion or a war with Kardasia and the Romulans?

>Because friendship is magic and you do everything to help a friend.

Why is Sisko treating the chain of command, direct orders from superiors (2 times!) and his oath to the federation like its some toilet paper?

>Because friendship is magic and you do everything to help a friend.

You see the problem Mr. Benjamin "friendship is magic" Sisko literally deserts his posts violates orders and will go AWOL to save 1 friend even if this means destroying the federation.

This is literally his rationality that the show unironicaly presents.

After this incident he is not striped of his command by his superior for no reason whatsoever.

This is not even explained this illogical even occurrences and we are informed of it.

Presumably Sisko sang a entire song about the magic of friendship to his superior who was enchanted by the magic of friendship Sisko has in his hart.

Another example of this bad behavior (all violations by Sisko are logged from the start)

What can be thrown under "talking shit" (this never materializes)

<01x08 Dax

Sisko is basically insinuation

>Hey gang lets lie and fabricate evidence or try to fine loop holes because Dax is my friend and we are going to save Dax regardless of what the truth is.

>Because friendship is magic and you do everything to help a friend.

<01x15 Progress

Sisko encourages the faking of reports to hide Kira's disobedience of direct orders.

>Because friendship is magic and you do everything to help a friend.

However "The Die Is Cast" is the prime example of this Sisko literally violates orders and sees no punishment or explanation for his actions, talk about living in a universe with no consequences!

I also noticed that there is a unhealthy obsession with the

>Friendship above everything else

Motive in retrospect.

<Heart of Stone

Can be summarized with

>Fuck romance and love and all this shit friendship is above everything else!

By Odo.

<Invasive Procedures

Basically the same only more extrema

>Fuck you! You are only my life long lover Sisko is my friend!!1111ONEONEONE

From the Trill.

However this can be spin doctored begin a Trill thing or the guy going crazy or overloaded from the procedure.

There are quotes about "valuing our friendship" etc.

It silly if you think about it, the show should be called "The friendship station in space".

I seriously did no expect this craziness from the show.

At least Sisko is self consistent in valuing friendship above everything else, only if he did have a MLP doll in his office and talked about MLP instead of baseball the image would be complete.

They do. I think you just don't notice because Quark and Quork actually do sound extremely similar and English isn't you first language. Quark is an actual English word, quork is not. A quark is a type of elementary particle. It's also a kind of cheese, but it's not very common in the English speaking world. It's more of a European food.

Fun fact did you know that English is fucked the way it is because it was supposed to have a phonetics reform way back in the 1800s however no one did it and now you are stuck with the retardation of writing system?

English language is fucked mostly because it's an unholy union of Norman French and Anglo-Saxon German, with the former making up "educated" words and the latter more common, vernacular words. Norman French spelling was already slightly fucked because it used a Latin alphabet for a language that was no longer Latin; The creation of English made this even worse because unlike French, Anglo-Saxon German isn't even slightly related to Latin, so using a Latin alphabet with these Germanic words fucks things even more. Add in the fact that since then, we've pilfered vocabulary from Latin directly (as opposed to indirectly through the Frogs) as well as some Greek here and there, and things have gone from bad to worse. At this point, there's no sense in trying to reform the language–it's far beyond the point of no return, and as a native English speaker I take some perverse enjoyment in watching foreigners try and fail to make sense of our bizarre language, which we have no trouble with because we grew up speaking it.

Yet its true.

I have logged Odos behavior (HAHAHAHA see now I have ammunition for debates like this) Odo has a unhealthy obsession with Quark.

Odos biggest fantasy is to see Quark in jail.

Odo like Sisko did extremely asinine shit in like repaying Quark for Quarks generosity(Quark did give Odo free information before trying to jump the station) with literally gang pressing him into service for help.

So if you help Odo he will fuck you over don't help him and he leaves you alone.

You want this evidence in time code format? Or do you want me to give you WebMs of Odos most asinine/autisticaly-obsessive behaviors?

I logged all of Odos behaviors and until this point (The Die Is Cast) Odo was nothing other then autistic shady and asinine. He literally did not deserve any sympathy or did anything good. His attitude before getting tortured sums him up perfectly.

Makes sense, given he's a Founder. Consider the story of the Vorta - they were a primitive ape/lemur-like species with the barest hint of sentience, one day a group of them helped protect a Founder from a lynching. How does the Founder repay them? Uplifts the entire species into an alpha-slave race brainwashing them into absolute fealty and directly controlling which of them can reproduce and then only through extensive cloning programs.

It's just plain in the Founders' nature to be treacherous bastards.

Depends how you look at it. The Vorta in turn gained control of the Jem'Hadar essentially becoming an aristocracy of a vast empire answering only to the Founders and engineered to not only be able to do their jobs well but enjoy it. Quark wants to get off the station.

Odo literally abuses his power and uses a bullshit reason to gang press(force recruit) Quark into working for him.

Not true. They're both Indo-European, and you can tell.

Consider: (languages in order are English, Latin, German, and Sanskrit for good measure)

>father, pater, Vater, pitar

>month, mensis, Monat, masa

>wind, ventus, Wind, vatah

But they are different enough that mashing them together fucks you up.

Then again, it has its advantages. It's thanks to the Germanic-Latinic mishmashery that we dropped grammatical gender, which always seems like more trouble than it's worth to me. When Old English sunne is feminine but Latin sol is masculine, and OE mona is masculine but Latin luna is feminine, it was easier to just do away with it all.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say than modern english in an unholy fusion of different languages from the different ethnic groups that have invaded the island over the years?

Modern english has a LOT of influence from the normans, who spoke french.

Like most European languages, latin or no, it is also heavily influenced from having latin neighbours for around 2000 years and latin having been the language of the church there for large chunk of that time.

Although funnily enough, while Rome and the church did have an effect on Britbong culture, almost none of the Latin in English came directly from the Romans. Barring some additions in modern times, the Latin roots in English came from Norman French.

OP HERE.

So I have a lot of reports to give however first of I need to get some advice form you guys.

You see while creating my project and getting familiar with datatables I learned actual SQL (Real database programing language for real databases).

And I’m itching to get my SQL knowledge used in some project.

I have SQL hunger so to say.

The only problem is that by making my records in SQL I would lose some of the advantages that I have in datatables while gaining other benefits.

For example I would lose the ability to insert images into a table the variant of SQL I’m using is not permitting me to use image in itself.

Another thing I would lose is hover to see text.

So no spoiler text an no yellow note summery.

So I have 3 choices

1) Start using SQL databases

2) Don’t use SQL databases and use datatables

3) Merge together datatables and SQL

You see I have heard of a possibility to use datatables to access a SQL database to display in datatables.

Should I try to use option 3 ?

I can think of a way to simply insert HTML into the fields of a the SQL database and then have datatables use this text in itself thereby gaining the full functionality of datatables and SQL best of both worlds with no downsides.

What do you think guys?

The watching DS9 project was something to test my skills and I will not abandon it.

I wanted to watch DS9 from start to finish and I will finish it.

I don’t think that I will switch to a SQL database the datatable has to much data in it already.

So I will finish the listing(of DS9) with datatables only.

However I’m so hungry to use SQL.

I’m already thinking of ways how to use SQL in my day to day life.

And hobby projects like creating a listing (this is what I’m calling what I’m doing retroactively) for a TV show like DS9 is a great way to test the waters if I fuck up I have a semi functional listing and its OK.

However if I fuck up with creating something serious that I will use for my personal life then I will be angry beyond help for painting myself into a corner.

For example the DS9 project revealed that do to its nature DS9 simply bloats with more and more tags for episodes.

Plot fragments are scattered unlike other trek there is no simple

“Time traverse episode”

“The holodeck is crazy episode”

“Afterlife episode”

This resulted in shit loads of tags even now I fantasize and see how I could have made the whole thing. Separate tables for every tag and joining them together with a episode index table on a primary list table.

This way I can produce table with only the tags I’m currently interested in or change the order of columns to my wish.

I’m simply so excited to try this in SQL.

What do you think guys?

What? Wouldn't it be easier to have one "Tags" table with each tag being an entry. With a primary key it would be easy to add them to the episode review.

I suggest you learn about relational databases this book is good, no seriously give it a look(yes even I was skeptical about it "The Manga Guide to Databases").

https://github.com/wuzhouhui/misc/blob/master/programming/db/The%20Manga%20Guide%20to%20Databases.pdf

This process is named database normalization.

>Wouldn't it be easier to

1) This is a hobby project and I'm itching to test out these ideas.

Once more its a semi useful test if I fuck myself over its learning experience and I made something semi usable. This is practice for the real world.

2) I want to experiment with joins and multiple tables and SQL stuff on things that are important and not stupid test examples

3) Ignoring the SQLite (my flavor of SQL that I use) has a HARD limit of Maximum Number Of Columns = 2000.

https://www.sqlite.org/limits.html

>The default setting for SQLITE_MAX_COLUMN is 2000. You can change it at compile time to values as large as 32767. On the other hand, many experienced database designers will argue that a well-normalized database will never need more than 100 columns in a table.

The documentation itself says:

> On the other hand, many experienced database designers will argue that a well-normalized database will never need more than 100 columns in a table.

>well-normalized database will never need more than 100 columns in a table.

>"Tags"

I think I need to clarify this. I have difficulties naming the things(I used to talk about my listing as a database etc) I'm doing the best idea to get a overview is to see

>>24954

>>24956

I'm basically having columns and if for example the episode has the holodeck in it or the transporter(accidents etc) there will be a entry in this column.

The problem with this is that I can not filter columns I want or change their order in datatables I can do this in SQL however the experts talk about normalizations so why not normalize my database? Win win.
