Razörfist is going to be doing an episode-by-episode breakdown on Deep Space Nine. Are any of you planning on watching it?

I agree with a lot of his initial appraisals of the core characters, with the exception of saying that Quark never changes as a character. Should be somewhat interesting to see what he has to say.

a friend sent me this vid, but I dunno. I liked DS9 a lot, but I've disliked the tone of every review made of the show. Hard to put into words, but the reviewer always feels the need to stress how this is the true and honest vision of Trek and TNG/TOS were too soft. Plus this video reminded me of every cringy DS9 fanboy who needed to jump in to the discussion of "Kirk or Picard" with "DUDE IT'S TOTALLY SISKO BECAUSE HE PUNCHED Q AND DIDN'T GIVE A FUCK" like a spastic 13-year old boy. I'll probably skip, wasn't too into it.
I'm also biased, but the secondary cast of DS9 was much stronger than the main cast (aside from Quark and Odo) so I'm not that vowed when someone praises the latter

You do bring up something, though: I've noticed that Niners seem especially passionate about Deep Space Nine being the best of Star Trek, and that they tend towards edge.

I totally get why Niners are so passionate about the show since back when it was still airing fucking Voyager was hailed as the proper Trek show while DS9 was apparently the edgy dark one that betrayed Gene's vision. Now that people can easily rewatch and discuss them online, DS9 got the public and praise it always deserved. That said, I think they forget the show did a lot of shitty decisions with the characters (mainly with Dukat at the end there, but I'd also argue with Bashir and Sisko) and though the serialized format worked well with the Dominion storyline, I feel it would've worked even better if the seasons were also shorter. Episodic TV lends better for longer seasons, since you're going in with the knowledge not everything is going to be gold, but it's totally okay, since the whole picture isn't as important as all the different moments. I know the argument against that is the "fat", so to speak, allows for character development, but if other series can do that in 10 episodes without having a ton of filler, then DS9 could've done that as well. However, I won't deny serialization was still very new in the 90s, so this is more me looking back to it, but not critizising the writers' decisions concerning the format of the show as it was at the time. Also, I just kinda miss episodic (non-comedy) shows, it would make half the shit airing nowadays easier to watch.

This is always the wrong opinion, about fucking everything.
If there was one thing Game of Thrones needed, other than better writer/directors, especially post season 4, it was a fuckload more episodes. Like, t would have been better with roughly double the number.
The 20 plus number of episodes per season is one thing I sorely missed and dearly appreciate, because it allows for slow developments to be taken slowly.

Looking forward to what he has to say, hell, I might even do a complete re-watch of the series with it, as I haven't watched the whole thing properly in ages. On most other things I tend to either strongly agree with the guy or completely disagree, so I look forward to either nodding or flipping out at his retarded bullshit.
One other thing that's going to be interesting is comparing his opinions with another, smaller Youtuber (Lorerunner) I kind of follow who started doing the exact same thing with both TNG and DS9 a few weeks ago. They could not be any more different as people, but both love DS9 so I am also curious how they match up too.

The guy's whole thing is that he is consistently much more positive and focused on the best aspects on anything he's reviewing than just about any other reviewer I've watched, be it your typical YouTube personality (especially those with the ANGRY gimmick) or just anyone even trying to keep it professional. But even with that, and even if you haven't seen some of his other reviews of other shows where he mentions DS9 constantly, it's clear the show is very much one of his favourites.

New TV has a much greater prevalence of serialized, story-heavy productions over the episodic sitcom style. Because of this there's less of a need to stretch out the show with filler episodes.

I don't know if I'd go so far to call Move Along Home "pretty damn good" in retrospect. Speaking as someone who first saw it in a vacuum, it was a perfectly forgettable episode. Some good Quark and Odo scenes but watching the senior staff play Candyland was an in one ear, out the other sort of deal.

Elephant in the room is Babylon 5. I don't give a fuck what fanbois say, B5 did political intrigue better. Sure it was cheesy and low budget, sure it was melodramatic, but the characters were generally clearly good or evil. Ds9 probably went for moral ambiguity but it ended up just being wishy washy to enable mass appeal/not offend anyone.
>continuity arc
Good effort in DS9 but unfocused so it stayed hard to keep track of minor plot points. B5 did it better because the main story was simple to follow, and they were very good about reminding the viewer of past events they may have missed.
>characters
Lets be honest, apart from dukat, garak and quark, the other characters just faded into the background. Even odo was a weak portrayal of a frontier sheriff/vigilante cop who bends the rules to get shit done.
>Set design
As ugly as B5 despite having 30x the budget, terok nor looks like trash tbh
What I wanted was B5 in the star trek universe.

On the other hand I find the TNG cast hugely overrated. Sure, everyone likes Picard, Data, Riker, and Worf, but then there's Dr Crusher, Troi, LaForge, and Wesley.

Oh its not that Voyager is flawless, its that there are way too many Chuck dickriders that parrot a bunch of pointless horseshit, or nitpick stuff that has no business being nitpicked, and makes it damned clear you only hold your opinion because you don't won't people to look at you funny.
Take Chuck's review of the episode where they encounter a people that live on a giant ship, tooling through space, and Harry gets laid and catches an STD and it turns out she is part of a revolution.
Chuck takes Janeway's throwaway gag comment about how thick a book is regarding interspecies fucking, and spergs out about it like its an actual flaw instead of an ironic joke that points out all the times it should have been brought up, never was, and all the times Harry Kim gets into shit because his luck is completely fucked.
And on another episode, he uses ancient, irrelevant UPN preview commercials against the quality of an episode. I don't think its even possible to find something related to trek that can be more completely defined as "Shit no one cares about, was never relevant, and most people don't even know it exists".
Oh and his old sperging about how "You can't fuck science like that". Because shorthand, evolving terminology, and new definitions to explain fields of physics regarding negative space wedgies that probably are entirely fictional is totally gonna match up to real life.
At some point, Chuck stopped giving Voyager legitimate criticism, or even a legitimate opinion, and just started hating for hates sake. And sometimes it just straight up makes him look completely fucking retarded.
Like when he reviewed the Hirogen two parter with the Nazi's. And attempted to make a joke that Hirogen technology was more compatible to the holosuite because the Hirogen hooked up some generators.
No, you dumb shit, thats not a matter of software or even hardware compatibility. They just plugged a generator in. If you wanted to say anything, you could have commented on how impressive it is that Hirogen have power generation capability that is even remotely comparable to a running Warp Core in a package small enough to be carried around like a briefcase.
And here lately, in his deathwlaker review, he kept harping on about "NAZI DEATH CAMP SHIT SCIENCE" and something something Evil Cardassian who cured a plague. Trying to compare the two. I'm sorry, was it ever stated that the Cardassian went full Japanese and started the plague themselves for shits and giggles, or was it quite literally "Oh shit, Bajorans are dying, quick, do everything we can to cure this stuff".

It was. And they had the most relatable characters.
Oh don't get me wrong, there were some severe problems, like the way Jeri wrote Janeway as a Mary Sue half the time.
But the Bellana/Tom pairing was among the most watchable and engaging relationships in Star Trek. And you just know it triggers the fuck out of people, what with being an allegory for WM/BM, and the episode where she is trying to genetically carve out the Klingon/Black part out of the child.

>This is always the wrong opinion, about fucking everything.
In the case of DS9 it totally isn't, because most of these filler episodes are terminally boring. It's like the writers had absolute zero creativity as what to throw at their protagonists which is sort of ridiculous considering they are right next to a wormhole leading to the other end of the Galaxy. If some of the filler episodes were as good as the better exploration episodes of TNG or even VOY it would be okay, but this way it just forces you to sit through a lot of meaningless crap before another story episode airs.
They should have added way more Defiant episodes, it always felt extremly liberating when they finally got on the ship, "all stations ready, captian", etc. - at least it started to feel like Star Trek. Don't get me wrong, I like DS9, but it can be a snoozefest when the story doesn't progress. One of the main reasons for the low ratings when it aired.
>If there was one thing Game of Thrones needed, other than better writer/directors, especially post season 4, it was a fuckload more episodes.
Hm, I would say season one and season two were perfectly paced and are in my opinion still one of the best television that's ever aired. For season three, maybe, the problem was that they discarded the Jayne Westerling storyline and got Robb to marry this random chick so Robb had pretty much nothing to do besides waiting to get slaughtered at the Twins. They could have stretched the season and made him invade the Westerlands, conquer a castle, and then fall in love with Jayne, which would have given the whole thing a lot more edge as well, since she is the daughter of an enemy. But then you have the problem of Tyrion pretty much doing nothing till the Purple Wedding besides marrying Sansa.
Season four was supposed to be fast-paced because this is where everything comes crashing down in a dumpsterfire. Of course, then we have the huge quality drop in season five, and I'm not sure if stretching it out would have helped. Contrary to popular opinion, I do like A Feast For Crows, it's one of the most atmospheric pieces, and I especially like Brienne's journey even if it amounts to nothing. They could have made this extremly atmospheric, but at this point they were already addicted to shekels so much that they would rather throw in more pointless sex and "epic twists" and "badass one-liners".
Regarding season six and seven, I'm totally with you, besides the abysmal writing, you feel like that they just want to rush it to the end at this point.

Kek, on their Enterprise-D walking simulator stream he and his producer/co-streamer/gay lover actually brought up the Lorerunner doing similar videos. Apparently DS9 being under constant threat of cancellation, as Lorerunner claims is bullshit, based on an interview with Ira Steven Behr. Anyone know anything about this? I'm not sure how much stock I'd put in just the producer's word, but it IS better than rumours.
Also, here's hoping this develops into banter/mild shittalking between them. Razorfist does it to everyone pretty decently, but I'd be curious how, if at all, Lorerunner would respond.

You are right about that. Lorerunner did say he mostly works off of old tv magazines that came out at the time as well as community-talk, whereas Razor goes more for the direct evidence/argument line peppered by being a bit of a dick about everything. It could be a pretty damn good stream/conversation/twatter spat to watch if they ever did it.

I like/like to hate the character, in both shows. It is interesting how in TNG, both through her daughter and Picard you got a far more basic, annoying overbearing mother image of her, whereas DS9 mostly focused on everything but that aspect. Razor mentions how it was great for Odo to finally play against someone who is not Quark, but the same is just as true for Lwaxana. (Well, Picard is technically rigid-ish occasionally, but it never truly showed and mostly either stopped at keeping people at arm's length or leapt straight into being uptight.)

Given that Lorerunner has been doing similar reviews of Voyager and Babylon 5 for years, and started his reviews of DS9 and TNG just about a month before Razor started his DS9 reviews, there's certainly plenty of room for Lore to have irritated Razor, either with his style in general or some specific point, so when they were doing the same episode, he took the opportunity to dig at him. (I'm kind of hoping someone will do the same apropos of his TES lorerun, the guy is doggedly against the sheer weirdness of the TES universe and just wants the place to be a planet, I'm guessing so it can all fit into his autistic "all fictional stories are all in the same universe, ran by my super special fanfic benevolent empire" concept.)
I just hope it escalates between the two, unlikely as that is. The ball is certainly in Lore's court now, and given that he records a bunch of his episodes in short bursts, he might not even hear about it for a while and IF he reacts in an episode, we won't see that for a month or two, whatever his schedule is.
>>23190
As for Razor's own actual content, a great review. Anyone else surprised by the direct inspiration for the episode? Perhaps I'm just a massive movie pleb, but I've never heard of a Man in the Glass Booth, but it certainly seems like a film to watch.

I don't get how you can be a TES fan and dislike the weirdness its universe has. It's part of the fun of it.

These videos are all clearly well within Fair Use guidelines, with 95% of the videos being a podcast with a static background. So, apparently we might be getting more episodes soon (read: maybe sometime in the next two to three months?)
Someone asked on Razor's latest stream and apparently they have recorded a few episodes already and are looking to upload them more regularly. I wonder how long they will be tolerated on YouTube.

Ha! The Star Trek series is politcally incorrect. First show and next Generation had a white male in charge and was going where no one had gone before. Voyager had a woman in charge and they were hopelessly lost. In Deep Space Nine a nigger was in charge and they were going nowhere.

In the nigger's show they were literally exploring an entire new quadrant and in the woman's show they defeated the big bad of Star Trek.

So what exactly is wrong with Deep Space Nine? I thought people liked it. Never watched it. I saw the originals and some of Next Generation, but that was it.

People do like it, it's commonly believed to be the best of the trek series. There are normie TNG fans that say they don't like it because LOL SPACE STATION DOESN'T GO ANYWHERE. It's not perfect obviously and has its problems, but acknowledging criticism isn't the same as calling it bad.

Alright, it's just that I saw a couple posts that seemed to be against DS9, and I'm not sure about what the consensus of the board is quite yet.

Actually, did the board drop in quality over the past few months or so? I'm curious because it seems like it, and the same happened to /sw/, although /sw/ is much more noticeable.

Slow board so shifts in quality of posting tend to be more dramatic. A single effort poster leaving or shitposter getting bored has more of an effect.

Pretty decent review. Not sure if the point with this being a bit of a turn of Quark's relationships with the main crew, and having actual proper permanent consequences is a good catch or an overreach, though.
Quark was always an easy launching pad for whatever the week's episode was doing, be it showing his bar as a centre of the community, or him being a slimy Ferengi bastard, it was used in the most convenient way. I certainly haven't noticed such a break before, but I could simply have missed it.
