Ever feel like we've become too addicted to this game?
With a dwindling playerbase, and less and less to do on the grid I find myself starting to question why I even keep playing.
Why do we keep spending money, some of us pouring up to hundreds a month into a game that gives us nothing in return. Spending hours making an avatar that maybe one or two people might say 'wow that's nice' to, but barely even mean it because they're so wrapped up in doing the same thing themselves
With all the talk lately of games drinking money in and giving the players nothing in return, I'm really starting to see SecondLife differently than i used to but I can't stop coming back.
Shit is this how it happens?

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play. You could say that about any MMO, especially F2P ones. It's kinda amazing how in all these years nobody ever tried to make a new social MMO either though. Just now new shit like VRChat starts appearing and is exploding in Popularity.
The reason SL is even still alive is because there literally isn't a modern alternative. A modern SL that would already include new creation tools within the game itself could make a killing.
Seriously a game that would basically be a "social creation engine" with absolute freedom could be fucking amazing. Sony actually got a game like this coming out this year. Shame game innovation on PC is basically dead.

Anyone have any tips for stopping? I genuinely do think I have a problem, OP has a sharp point.

Make an account on some other platform like Discord or Skype or whatever you want. Put it in your profile and tell people that if they want you, you're there.
The people who are actually worth your time will find you there, and those that don't weren't your friends to begin with.
Honestly, this saved me a bunch of hassle and let me know who the real people on there were, and who the self-absorbed shits were

Alternatively, if the ability to meet new and like-minded people is what you want on there, try joining some public discords for things you're interested in. Just google something you enjoy and tack the word Discord on it, join a few and see what sticks. SL is a social platform, yeah, but there are far better ones out there that won't also suck your wallet dry and give you nothing back

I have those things and most of the people that I talk in SL to are added on Discord. I guess I'm just saying how can I finally put SL down when it feels like one of the few things that keeps me occupied? Besides RL stuff like having a job and all that, got that covered.

I've made peace with the fact that I don't build avatars for any specific purpose, but the act of doing it is relaxing for me, in a way.

I only have like 2-3 people on discord from SL, i wish more people i knew used it or would add me, most people i meet are the types who dont speak about RL or just dont want to talk about video-games or SL shit outside of SL.

The only reason I play this game is for those few, happy moments when I can project myself as something of an alien or monster. A safe, anonymous way to show how I feel on the inside
Gives me an odd sense of composure and clarity, almost therapeutic. I feel free for once. Especially since there's no other popular media where I can play as a form of strange or Eldritch essence in an mmo setting.
I guess you could say I'm addicted to that..

Don't fall victim to the sunk cost shit, that's how you stay stuck. A better way to think about it is to think that you've already dumped enough money into it.
Think of what you'd be able to afford if you set aside the money per month you'd otherwise put into the game, and what you could get with that.

I don't get the "I already sank _ amount into _ that's why I keep _!" meme. Just walk away. You're not getting your investment's worth and you sure as hell aren't getting your investment back by continuing to be in a detrimental relationship with LL or any other similar situation.

who the fuck gets addicted to a videogame? I know someone who keeps complaining about being addicted to this shit but they just won't get up and go outside or something even though they've got friends for sure. I feel like it's an excuse to be lazy and complacent rather than actually face the problems they've got in their life right now. I don't even think it's a Second Life issue, I think it's a loser issue and SL is just a scapegoat for them to blame.

Well, sometime after your 16th birthday you may begin to understand the concepts of social anxiety and procrastination as well as other mental health issues that may be keeping your 'friend' from doing the things they should be doing with your life.
Oops, I mean 'their' life. Sorry, slipped up there.

A good amount of the people that go on Second Life are pretty fucked on a psychological level with mental illness. You can't use that "they're just lazy" shit and expect yourself to have the perfect counter to all of it.

self diagnosing tumblristas storming out of the woodwork. i want to bet some of you all are in the same situation as OP so let me lay down some shitty life advice.
if someone on Second Life hits you with the "i've got mental health issues" line ask them how long they've been in therapy and if they're feeling any better instead of trying to normalize their disorder and make it socially acceptable to be a non-functioning human being. you'll be doing them a kindness in encouraging them to get better in a positive and helpful manner.
it's one thing to have a legit diagnosis from an actual professional but most people with social anxiety don't get that far because the threshold for seeing a counselor is usually even higher than the threshold for doing anything in the first place.
if you don't have a diagnosis, how the fuck is anyone supposed to help you? there's a variety of different modalities of treatment available, from therapy to SSRIs. if someone's social anxiety is so bad that they feel like leaving SL is the magic fix to their mental health issues but they don't do it, and they don't go see someone about their problem, then how am i supposed to take that? especially if they don't quit like they keep insisting to everyone that they will.
here's the funny bit: SAD has a large quantity of overlapping symptoms with autism and if a person goes to get diagnosed, guess which disorder they're more likely to walk away with? hint: it's not SAD. what does that say about the general population of second life and the autism spectrum?
yeah i'm going to think someone's fucking lazy if they're riding the coat tails of actually mentally ill individuals and using that as cover to not do anything with their lives when they've never even seen a doctor. i get it, social anxiety sucks, it's hard to deal with but it IS entirely treatable. the first step to getting help is seeking it.
