How the hell do I make my avatar actually look good? I've bought the Maitreya body and have been toying with several heads but nothing ever looks quite right. What am I doing wrong? Am I just not finding the right stuff?

Patience and a lot of tweaking.

noob question, I'm a kemono + venus head pleb. I'm using a skin that had an applier for both, but I still have a super noticeable neck seam.

It's obvious that the lighting is different on the neck of the body and the bottom of the head. The head is darker, like it's in the shade compared to the neck.

Is there something obvious I'm missing to make this look better? Or do I just need to find a longer haircut and a choker or something to cover it up?

the neck seam will always be visible. even if the colors are 100% the same. change your lighting so you won't see it, that's the only thing you can do.

Not new to SL, but new to human avatars -- how do you make the system head have a static expression (e.g. open mouthed for lewds)?

Planning on Lelutka once I have the 5k for one. Their shape is closer to what I'm going for.

If you plan on getting Lelutka, it comes with several expressions built into the HUD. They also sell an add-on for a few sexual mouth movements.

First thing you have to remember is find a good skin. Shapes, especially faces, are massively dependent on the skin you use. If you can use the demo on the mesh head of your choice then even better. I seem to recall Catwa demos letting you do that, but not sure if you can with others.

Secondly, it will take a lot of fiddling around to get it right. If its your first time making a human shape, I'd recommend either modding an existing shape that looks good so you have a decent base to work off of, or use a picture as a guide.

Common mistakes tend to be over exaggerating features, like thighs, breasts, hips, etc. Also don't worry about looking "unique" too much either. Another common trap I see some noobish people fall into is they try to avoid things they see a lot of, and in turn wind up making their avs look ugly in order to be "different".

Unfortunately I can't get into SL at the moment, otherwise I'd try to give you some suggestions for sliders and such.

Oh and lastly, whatever head you buy, make sure its bento enabled and it has the facial poses you want. There are a few huds out there for facial poses, but most are made with catwa in mind as well.

Lelutka also does since that's what OP is interested in.

In terms of bodies, IMO with Maitreya you're better off staying relatively thin since it scales terribly with larger values.

Maitreya is also the best simply due to the sheer volume of unique stuff made for it. No other body can really compare with that sadly.

A basic bitch who spends top dollar on a mesh body and a mesh head will still be a basic bitch in the end.

As much as I want to agree with this sentiment, a basic bitch who spends top dollar on a mesh body and mesh head is gonna be easier on the eyes than all the other LL-bodies at the club. Even if they're still boring afterward, I hope they all change some day, because jagged polygonal hipbones are really not my jam.
