Why is Firestorm recommended if you want to create content? I can't seem to find a solid answer for this, but everyone recommends is

So it's better to use a similar viewer to your customers?

Also is there any way to test out assets without uploading them? This is the most retarded system I've ever seen

You can test out textures without uploading them if an item is mod. Unfortunately many items are uploaded by retards that think they should make everything no-mod when they can.

For every other type of item you should use Aditi, the test grid. Uploads are free there, since it's intended for testing. http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Preview_Grid

Widely used viewer, so if you want to provide support to a customer, you can direct them through various menus more often.

Up to date on content updates (ie, gets bento and such first).

Uploader works well. When other viewers couldn't upload attachment point rigging, Firestorm could.

I will say that when I used Singularity, UUID input was extremely useful and I will not stop missing that. Otherwise, it has a lot of decent features.

These are really the only reason I've seen to use Firestorm in a long time and it's really not that much more difficult to help people while using other viewers.

I use Black Dragon for general use, then either Firestorm or the standard LL viewer for building. Black Dragon: Shit for building, fantastic for everything else.

I've got nothing against Firestorm, I used to use it as my main viewer, but, well, it used to be great because it added in lots of little features that made using SL a lot easier, and generally ran better and more stable than LL's viewers, but at some point they seemed to drop that as a priority.

I switched back to it a few months ago and hated it. I've gotten spoiled with features like improved avatar control mapping and mouse steering. Gave it a couple months and switched back to BD.

If you're creating content which includes scripts, Firestorm adds some nice extensions. These include the ability to make switch statements, #include local files (So you can make a file of useful, common functions and simply include that), and a basic optimizer step that removes unused variables and functions. It's all converted into plain LSL in a preprocessing step so that it can be compiled on LL servers.

As a scripter who uses the LSL preprocessor extensively, it's a pain if you ever have to work with other people and/or give out the script to someone who doesn't have the preprocessor enabled (even if they are on Firestorm).

If anyone opens a script that has gone through the preprocessor, they'll see the original code/comments in a massive block at the start of the script, then the processed code with all of your comments removed.

Not to mention if you #include your own files (like I do). Even if someone else was using the preprocessor, as soon as they tried to compile the script it would just error until you give them your #includes. What I've resorted to is just manually copypasting my custom functions at the top of the script, but it's almost unreadable sometimes.

I forgot to mention the scenario of someone else editing your script while not using the preprocessor.

Any changes they make to your script in the non-commented area will not show up to you when viewing the script with the preprocessor enabled.

I've barely dipped my toes in the scripting waters so forgive me if this is retarded but, is there a benefit to scripting inside of that instead of in like Sublime Text or something?

The LSL preprocessor is something you won't even notice. It's built into the viewer and kicks in automatically every time you save a script.

I use Sublime Text myself, it doesn't change a thing.

I'm pretty sure every viewer has this feature buried in the debug settings. It's just Firestorm that brought it, and the ability to see the crosshairs of others, out into the open and turned it into some weird game for the paranoid and the irritating.

Getting an IM from some narcissist who thinks they're The One because they made lookat crosshairs visible is a useful way to filter out people I never want to speak to.

No, google it. Niran decided to remove the feature because he has a cuckold fetish or something.

"remove" implied it was ever in... it's not an official feature by linden labs' standards so niran didn't add it, niran has a page to tell you how to disable it manually.
