It is an AFK Zone. If you go to /d/ looking to fuck you're going to be disappointed most of the time.

Just go to a roleplay sim or make some friends at a sex sim.

Literally 10x easier to get laid with a 1/4 of the disappoint you get at that place.

Sex Dolls and AFK Slut House. Sometimes theres animes, sometimes theres not. But if you just want to bump pixels without hassle go there.

>Hangout Spots

This will take work. I suggest fitzing around an RP sim then just hanging out in the OOC area. You give them traffic and the friends you've met will probably be idling there too.

>I don't want to go to an rp sim though. So then what?

Dust off your friends list and reconnect with people. The garden will weed itself at that point.

I have to throw Hentai High in first simply because its the biggest thing around that won't die.

Whether thats because the internal management is better then the external management is beyond me.

A couple of people are HH Refugees who hang out at /d/.

I know Hajime City is getting more active. Started by some old HH RPers.

Kokoro Academy isn't open/actively rping atm, but people fitz around there. So you may just run into people to hangout with.

Midgar MIGHT be anime? I really don't know.

I know Remnants of Earth allows anime head, but, HAHA, good fucking luck getting started.

Beacon Academy (an RWBY sim) has anime heads. That's worth checking out.

Thats pretty much all the active or noteworthy ones.

Most of these excluding Hajime are school based roleplays (because heaven forbid people change the setting)

Hajime and RoE are the only two that aren't school settings roleplays.

RoE is like DnD on speed in space. They may or may not do info sessions for new players, but its a lot to read and get started with.

Its easy if you have someone to lead you in and explain it.

Its good because it shys away people who don't want to learn the system. But, it also alienates good roleplayers because its so complex I think.

RoE only allows anime heads if you roleplay an android (like a persocom ala Chobits). As a regular human or space-elf you have to go "realistic".

>>28417

What i find unpleasant in their system is the way you "progress" with your character. You can't really start out with bionics or anything, limiting the amount you can customize your character when you start out, you're a generic dude and have to "earn" your character. You're also kinda forced to join a faction to get a weekly paycheck, otherwise you're literally staying a hobo, sifting through junk won't really let you earn the stuff you want.

I can understand the reasons for doing it, it prevents snowflake marysues from being "Overpower McTeleportsbehindyou", but this MMORPG like progression doesn't really mesh well with the player driven economy and the social interaction they aim for. It works for EVE because they have a large playerbase where there's always someone active, but in ROE you're sometimes struggling to find someone capable of giving you a fucking ID chip.

Nah thanks. Plenty of those places filled with angsty teenagers who'll cry to the admin at the first sign of their marysue losing a battle.

What would be ideal is a moderated character sheet submission with a pointbuy system, where deviations are allowed if they can be justified/balanced (buying extra/better perks by taking extra flaws etc, admin moderated) and combat is decided by dice. Or a round of BARE or something

Unless you want a combatless RP sim just for picking up hookers for some dine&dash. Those never last long either, sadly.

I'm going to have to agree with this anon here. Freeform roleplay is pretty much cancerous in all but the best of circles. Allowing randoms to indiscriminately roll a character means you'll end up with an abundance of [insert generic fedora-tipping atheist icon here] clones. With so many people playing overpowered characters there tends to be never-ending conflicts between players that, inevitably, will reach OOC situations. Also, this sort of environment promotes cliques to form and once you've got half of the sim standing silently with each other, engrossed in IMs, you're fucked. On the other hand, too much moderation means nothing will ever get done without someone on the admin team showing up. If your sim can't function without a storyteller then you're fucked too.

It's difficult to find a balance of these two before financial troubles or internal squabbling destroys the sim.

A sim actually did exactly what you guys are talking about it and it was the best shit since sliced bread.

Everyone was balanced, the point buying was legit, and the stories were a lot of fun.

No anime heads unfortunately.

It went down though. Not sure what happened to it. It wasn't financial issue though.

I may try to contact the owner and see if they ever revive it.

Theres a sim that does both of these at the same time and it's awful. It's called Lismore. Every character is a Mary Sue, people making demon characters despite neither looking or acting the part. Cliques are all over and it got to the point the place is borderline dead and most of the time it's a ghost town. It used to be an exclussive furfag RP area but it got so bad that it needed to open up to human players. Spoiler alert: Didn't help.

They had character applications and mods who would help with the creation process, but if you've buddied up with them they'd ignore glaring flaws. Want to play an antagonist so theres actual fucking conflict with a balanced character? Too bad 'cus they organize their own cringy shit with more Mary Sues they create.

You have no idea how many Opinions on this I have. But what I want to know the most is, why aren't there more of us? It's almost fucking painful, logging in and looking at the state of SL RP when if it were done well it would be completely unparalleled by anything else. The freedom of expression, creativity and dynamism allowed by more traditional tabletop RPGs, married with full three-dimensional representations of characters, animations, locations, props, items, the works. Is it true? Is such a vast majority of the community too involved with playing Dressup SIM 2003, and the ones looking to take it further really so few? They're sure as fuck not lurking in the tabletop groups. I've looked.

Every RP SIM is the same.

>once you've got half of the sim standing silently with each other

And it is exactly that. All of them. Go jump in one right now. Any of them. That is what you're gonna see. That is all you're gonna see. Only it's usually more than half. The rest will be scattered, spaced alone throughout the SIM. There is no movement. There is no interaction. There is only fucking standing there.

Is this a failure of the community? Of course it is. But unfortunately, the community isn't going to change. Ever. And just having a space isn't enough. "hey guys here's a SIM for you to RP on and some props and background and stuff OK bye!" doesn't work. You have to create a, y'know, GAME to go with it. One that incentivises RP by incentivising movement and interaction. The "level-up by idling" system that very nearly everything uses isn't going to cut it, neither is the "save a notecard and when we finally get around to reviewing it, we'll give you XP" system others use. There are many systems that could fix things, ways that are totally dependent on the player without the need of an admin or "vetting process" that could take a week or more (if your SIM does not allow people to just show up and start playing, you're fucked there too). Nor would it be dependent on bots to keep players busy. I know it's possible, I've scripted some myself. But no one wants to do that. They want to dress their polygon doll, stand it someplace and just look at it.

RoE was a good attempt, and tried to have that sort of spirit, but ultimately falls into its own design flaws. And what you wind up with is what you see when you go to literally every other RP SIM, a bunch of fucking nothing happening.

There's another I've been keeping my eye on, I won't give out the name because it has so many problems too, just as many as the others. But I see how they could be fixed, even made pretty fun (as fun as what they're going for would allow, anyway), and I took the liberty of lowjacking their HUD to code these fixes. That's how I spend most of my time in SL now. Coding whole systems and games and little tweaks and plugins that will never be used or distributed, because SL is boring as fuck to the point of being unforgivable but I wish it were not. I doubt, even if the SIM owner were ever not permanently AFK, even though I have done as much of the work for them as I could myself, they would choose to listen. Because no one wants that. They want to dress up and look at themselves. How splendorous they are, and how little substance beyond.

>Is such a vast majority of the community too involved with playing Dressup SIM 2003

Yes and no.

>Is this a failure of the community? Of course it is.

Sort of.

I actually have some survey data on this. I need more responses to make sure its accurate.

Personally, I think it boils down to people being complacent. Not content, complacent.

Roleplay has been consist of having conversations and MAYBE if you're lucky on the day its a full blue moon, you find a four leaf clover, and a cat walks into a Chinese restaurant singing showtunes will something interesting happen that wasn't planned before hand.

Without conflict in roleplay characters become flat.

Without reaching outside of your circle of contacts no new ideas or personalities can enter.

Without doing something that in the back of your mind you think "This is stupid as hell" you'll never know if you'll truly like it OR learn what you don't like which is just as important.

Instead people are complacent. They wait for things to happen TO them.

They don't make their own fun and they complain they're bored.

Its like saying you're dying of thirst, but you won't don't wanna crawl to the water fountain.

This is why everyone stands around silent.

Nobody invests in each other or the sim anymore.

Aside from financial issues and drama this is the biggest threat to RP sims in my opinion:

Complacency.

>why aren't there more of us?

That's exactly why: there aren't more of us because there aren't more of us. It's a self-fulfilling prophecy; people simply drift away when there's nothing for them to do and nobody to do it with. I know I haven't been on SL in any serious sense for the better part of two years, and most of the reason is just because it's much easier to get what I'm after RPwise elsewhere. The effort involved in getting decent RP in SL is just more than it's worth, and finding anything more than isolated individuals (like, say, a group, or an entire sim) is kind of like waiting for two stars to collide: sure, it happens, but it's unspeakably rare, and it takes a long damn time. I'd rather spend that time and effort elsewhere, where results are much more guaranteed.

Leave it to sex role-players to be totally fucking clueless on why SL breaks down on a cyclical basis. This has all happened before and it will all happen again.

There's a few variables at play, life is one. People's priorities shift, their free time, and how they choose to spend that free time. Our society rewards instant gratification, which is why every cycle this problem gets worse. Old internet greybeards know how to cope with this better, which is why IRC was so popular, and MUDs too.

it's real fucking simple, though. To have any functional group in these things you need social alphas, you need the tastemakers. The people who establish the cliques and set a standard for behavior. Without any pack alphas, the betas just laze about, unsure of what to do and eventually leave. You need those core personalities to establish territory and create a level of conflict to encourage interesting dynamics to form.

Unfortunatey, the sim owners are rarely the kind to have both the money & the alpha mindset necessary to manage the packs and cliques. That's how the drama always gets out of hand, when conflict resolution needs to happen the group admins are almost always too passive. They *think* it's being impartial, but it's really cowardice.

Ultimately, it doesn't matter who you side with in a conflict as long as decisive action is made and you choose someone who benefits the social atmosphere you want to cultivate in your group.

Without doms / alphas to make the decisive calls to do whatever it takes to instill a cohesive social atmosphere, people will fucking leave because the effort threshold exceeds what the betas are looking for. So the Betas that remain are people with literally nothing better to do and no Will to Power. Whenever they get busy, or find a new passive roost to root in, they'll leave.
