as for not being to everyone's tastes, that was what I was going for; disheveled dead chick covered in burn scars with no eyes -- I find a certain glamour in being a bit unsightly, honestly. I wish there were mesh heads that reflected imperfect facial features, like busted noses and big ears.

You'll usually come out at a loss by playing until you get what you want. That's kind of the point. Your best bet is to use area search at inworld yardsales, if it's from a popular gacha event, or try to use the marketplace yes.
Assuming just not getting the item at all isn't a reasonable option. Even if you get the item it will be no copy, trans, and possibly no mod. You'll have to ask the creator to trade it in for one with copy/no trans perm. And many won't do it for you, but a few will.

The only time I haven't gotten what I paid for on the marketplace is when someone sold me a cheap pair of gacha earrings and only included the left one instead of both sides. If a creator is okay with trading in items, they will usually say it in their profile. That being said, don't be afraid to ask unless their profile specifically states that they won't trade in items. Usually, though, there are restrictions. A lot of them only let you trade in rares or full sets.
If you plan on playing a gacha machine instead of buying, it's a good idea to have a plan for all the extras. Sometimes, you can just use it as an excuse to give fun and dumb gifts to friends. You should also consider setting up a marketplace store to sell the extras. Things sell faster when you price them a little under market price, so you can get a good chunk of your money back, and sometimes turn a profit on rares.

I don't entirely understand why this is so difficult for people. Also, the angle of the camera needs to be straight on, obviously. And not have heeled feet. Or hooves, whatever.
That cow is possibly thicker than most humans, but it is a cow. And some humans are thicc, anyway, so even then maybe not, I dunno.
As a related aside about something I've heard about all this, I really think human proportions are important to know how to achieve even if you don't want to look human, so that you can actively choose to reasonably deviate from them to create a specific caricature if one wishes.
