Complementing my previous post, since the game is basically a sandbox, you are literally free to do whatever you want (except if is illegal in the United States and the state of California...and of course the technical capabilities of a graphics engine with more than 13 years).
Because of that, people slowly transformed a game that supposedly should be a "virtual reality" in the bigger and better sex simulator in 3D with all kinds of fetishes that you can imagine.
And because of the "social" characteristic of the game (for being a 3D chatroom), drama is inevitable.

SL is a good place to make friends, even with the risk of drama; the game has several niche groups, so it is easier to find people with similar interests. Even in sex places I found really good friends.
Btw, you can get real money, like making stuff and selling it, for example. almost 100% of all the content In game is made by users.
You have use RL money to pay Linden Lab and buy L$ (game's currency), have premium account and to buy land. Apart from that, everything is with L$.
And if somehow you accumulate enough L$, you can sell them and earn RL money. Believe it or not, some people became millionaire with this game.

If you want to roleplay there is a new place called Lit City that is going to open. It's a city with an island, the place is huge and there is not lag so far. It's goint to open in a week or two. The rp is sim like, take care of your needs, get a job so that you can take care of your needs, and so on. You need a house to live in too, etc. It's not sex rp.
