speaking of Oshii, I wouldn't be surprised if XRA turned out to be a parody of Angel's Egg in particular.
It shares very specific elements with it (angel in the title, a bird as the main motif) as well as the same premise (strange characters wander in a surreal desolate world looking for answers to their existential questions) but everything else is the polar opposite: garish inconsistent visual design instead of elegant coherent aesthetics, shitty CGI animation instead of beautiful hand-drawn, extremely chatty instead of sparse dialog, goofy comedy instead of dignified drama, episodic format with no real arc instead of a movie with one story, everything is explained with lots of blunt exposition instead of just being left as a mystery, nonsensical mishmash of cultural references instead of sticking to judeo-christian imagery, frantic pace and editing instead of being steady and slow, characters that are explicitly looking for philosophical enlightenment instead of simply implying it, and of course, the general intent is to make fun of mysticism instead of taking it seriously.
That shit doesn't happen by chance.
