There's a lot of focus on Motoko's elements, but one thing I think doesn't get enough love is her wardrobe, especially in the manga. For example, this lovely jacket/trouser ensemble with the Indian style embroidered trim

The varied wardrobe is another reason why Mangatoko>SACtoko, though I understand why they did so; animation needing consistency, etc.

even then, it's undeniable that her best outfits usually come from the manga (with the exception of that lovely pumpkin jacket from the movie)
still, look at those bootsies, how they perfectly complement her bodysuit. Vastly superior to the clunky combat boots and pink greaves she wears in SAC

Shirow really doesn't get the appreciation he deserves as a character/costume designer. Not just in GITS, but in his other pre-95 works, he's fantastic at it.

He quite frequently begins a chapter with a full-body drawing of a main character in a cool new outfit. Deunan is the best example but it also happens to Motoko, as shown here
>>190
So, clearly, even outside of sexy abstract art, he has a taste for using his girls as fashion models.

He often closes them as well; from the workout scene between Deunan and Hitomi to the end of the… 4th volume I think? With Deunan and Bri planning a holiday.

An interesting part of Motoko's fashion tastes is that they seem to be purposefully Asian-inspired. There's this jacket, of course (which actually reminds me a bit of Mongol outerwear) but there's also some other outfits with straight shoulders and a diagonal front panel, much like a kimono.
the black outfit she wears in the Kuril isles even has puffy sleeves and trousers tapered at the forearms and shins, giving her a distinctly ninja-like silhouette.
And there's also her tactical fundoshi and ninja headband.
What I'm trying to say is, unlike other Shirow protagonists, Motoko really comes off as a bit of a weeb.

Well, she's really the only protag of his to really be a Japanese one; you could argue Leona Ozaki, but Newport there was specifically set up to be a more international, sci-fi feeling place with people from all over the world, Leona herself not being full Japanese, while in Ghost in the Shell part of the focus is that while the world's connected and corporate/government is merging, ethnic groups and languages haven't disappeared. Rather than a periphery police station, Motoko is right at the heart of Japanese politics; frequently dealing with situations involving national security, politicians, etc.

The others? You've got Black Magic and Orion, which don't take place in 'our world' (technically speaking, both taking place so far back in the past to essentially be nothing to do with our world) and Appleseed is set outside of Japan with non-Japanese protagonists.

But yes, like you said, a lot of her clothing does seem to purposefully push an Asian aesthetic, compared to say her drinking outfit in the first chapter, or the stuff that Deunan gets into.
Speaking of, did Leona ever really dress up much? She had that kinda cool outfit in the New Dominion Tank Police episode, and the bunny girl outfit in the first OVA, but I don't remember her in the manga ever enjoying changing into her civvies.

don't think so
she's a massive military otaku anyway, I do't think she'd dress in a very glamorous way.
in New Dominion we see that she basically dresses like Motoko in the movie, but with a red jacket instead of an orange one.
Holy shit come to think of it it might be the other way around: Oshii made Motoko dress like Leona.

Looks like Little Miss Walking Lawsuit thinks she can play with the big girls, huh? Not only can Motoko get away with punching a Cabinet Minister in the face, she's also got connections all over the place herself. Plus, she wouldn't even HAVE to pull strings officially; she can just dive into the Newport PD's records and fuck around there, leak the right information to the wrong people, and boom. Someone's stuck out in the rice fields guiding tourists to a museum on cryptid snakes and searching for lost cats.

IT COMES TO ME!
A CREEPY DESOLATE ORNATE HOUSE; EXTREMELY BAROQUE AND ORNATE YET OBVIOUSLY HIGH TECHNOLOGY
INSIDE THE HOUSE IN THE ANTEROOM AND FIRST PARTS OF IT ARE SEVERAL MANNEQUINS, DRESSED UP IN CLOTHING; AS YOU GO FURTHER AND FURTHER INTO THE HOUSE, THERE'S SMALLER DOLLS; HALF THE SIZE of fuck the caps lock, half the size of the mannequins.
Whoever's entering the place, going inside (probably found a email or a mysterious note left to him out of the blue to go there), pauses half way; he can see the hallway leading more into the heart of the house; the dolls getting smaller and smaller and more broken as you head in. The camera locks on his face then pans in as he's stuck between two mirrors; a large doll visible on one side and a small doll on the other, with another shot from each side showing the doorway, bright with light shilloutting him and the other from the back showing the growing darkness of the mansion.
As he reaches the center, there's a computer terminals in a room covered with wires, and tech, and on the keyboard is a tiny, GI Joe style figure of the Major with a blank look on her face. He reaches in to pick it up, and then blinks; the house becomes a ruin, the dolls don't exist, and he's looking around, bewildered.
