I said I would write a story. From the way the planning is going, it looks like it will become a novel. But I've decided to start posting some of the draft as I write it on here, partially to get suggestions for the plot and partially because I've not written any fiction in over 5 years, so I'm a bit rusty. Here it goes.

RWBY Chapter 1 – Draft 1

“What are we even doing here,” sighed Weiss, “We’ve already proven we can beat these things.”

“That’s the point,” Blake replied, “If we can beat them, Torchwick’s gang will be able to destroy them easily.”

“Besides, we could use the extra training.” Ruby’s interruption struck them all much harder than they had expected. Their recent defeats proved that they still had much to improve upon.

“Come on, gang, don’t get down. Fighting these will be fun!” Even though Yang had suffered the greatest loss to the silent Neo, she still wouldn’t let her team see her down.

“Right!” the other three agreed in unison.

Team RWBY approached the main training ground of the base, a converted hangar. Around them, soldiers marched in their perfect left-right-left timing, with only the odd new recruit still losing time, while others ran in a similarly uniform fashion. Mechanics tinkered with the insides of airships, attempting to keep them running smoothly. From the firing range a few hundred metres away gunshots could be heard. Ruby had never expected to be in a military base and found the experience both underwhelming and overwhelming at the same time. The quick pace of life, interesting people and special weapons that made Beacon home were missing here, and she thought the strict dress codes and thoroughly regimented lifestyle here seemed oppressive. Nevertheless, the military and Beacon Academy had to work together.

The team reached the hangar, and entered through the giant aircraft doors which were left ajar. The arched ceiling of the room amplified the noises, making the mech warming up and performing a final systems check in the corner seem much closer than it was. The empty viewing box at the other end of the room seemed lonely among the barren walls, providing a decent view of the arena from its position a few metres off the ground. Professors Ozpin and Goodwitch stood near the lift up to the box, engaging in what seemed to be a heated conversation. At least, heated on Glynda’s part. Ozpin’s manner in dealing with Glynda was as calm as ever. His ears perked up as soon as he heard the footsteps echoing around the chamber, and he and Glynda hastily ended their conversation, and turned to face their approaching students.

“Good morning , professors”, Ruby said politely.

“Team RWBY, reporting as ordered, sir!” Yang exclaimed, briskly raising her right hand to her forehead in a mock salute. Blake let out a slight chuckle at Yang’s exaggerated movement, and for a moment thought she could hear a noise of disapproval coming from the other side of the hangar.

“Good morning, girls. Did you sleep well?” Ozpin inquired.

“As well as we could on these horrid military bunks,” said Weiss, attempting to massage out the stiffness at the back of her shoulder. Glynda gave a slight frown.

“Now girls, you’re guests here, so you shouldn’t complain about the accommodation. Also, as fully-fledged huntresses you’ll be dealing with sleeping situations a lot worse than what you have here.” The small lecture did little to change their opinions of their room at the base, but served the purpose of reminding them what they had signed up for. As if sensing their new mindfulness of their purpose, Ozpin started to address the morning’s matters of business.

“Miss Xaio Long, are you feeling up for some training this morning?” he asked.

“Sure am! I can’t wait to get started!” Yang excitedly banged her fists together in anticipation; face lighting up as though she had just remembered it was her birthday.

“Good to hear. This morning, you’ll be fighting alone, against that mech and its pilot. Do you understand the purpose of these exercises?”

“To smash the mech!” Yang yelled out, punching her fist into the air. Blake was not impressed by this answer, and decided to give one of her own.

“It’s to test out the new designs in combat and try to find the flaws in them,” she explained.

“And the easiest way to do that? Smash the mech!” Yang’s excitement was visibly and audibly growing. It had been a while since she’d had a fun battle, as the team had been too dejected recently to enjoy any of their training fights.

The Beacon staff and students heard the sound of more footsteps bouncing around the cavernous room, and turned towards the door. General Ironwood and another military officer they didn’t recognize were approaching them. Ironwood’s dignified demeanour was matched by his associate, a younger man with brown hair kept neatly in a short, professional style. He had a kindly face, and wore a slight smile on it, uncommon on the military men, and it made the girls feel a little more relaxed. His white and grey coat seemed a little long on the man, being a few inches too short in the sleeves for him, but it showed his wide shoulders, large chest and strong forearms off well. His strides seemed to fall into a natural step with Ironwood’s, most likely, Ruby reasoned, because of shared military training. They reached the group, and stopped in front of them, the stranger half a pace behind the general.

“Good morning!” Ironwood boomed, the smile on his face so wide it reached the grey patches in his hair. “I’m pleased you all accepted my invitation. This man here is Colonel Silverbirch, Officer in Charge of Training and Education here at the base.”

“A pleasure to meet you,” Silverbirch said with a slight bow. As he bowed, Yang caught sight of a small patch of red-brown fur behind his back. Glynda looked to Ironwood, a look of concern crossing her face.

“Are you sure this is a good idea? The students don’t normally train with the military until their final year,” she said to Ironwood. He turned to meet her gaze.

“I’m sure. There’s nothing wrong with starting a little early. Is there, Ruby?” Ironwood looked down at Ruby, who smiled sheepishly back at him. “And considering current events, advanced training is essential. Come, we’ll get a better view from up in the box.” Ozpin and Glynda nod, and start strolling to the lift. The girls started too, but stop when Ironwood addressed them again.

“You stay here, girls, and cheer on your team mate. Yang needs to know you’re all supporting her.”

“We always are!” beamed Ruby.

“She certainly needs more support. I doubt she can get enough from her bras,” Weiss added.

Ok, so, I'm back. I've been working on it, but then my computer died, then I became homeless, and then I was out of internet, but things are back in order now. I've put the first 3 chapters in pastebins, because it's way easier than trying to post it all.

Chapter 1 - A New Hope - http://pastebin.com/EsSudhcE

Chapter 2 - Electric Boogaloo - http://pastebin.com/PvVVUdQw
