On an even more embarassing note, I confess I fell in love with Yang watching that ridiculous facerig FAQ they did at RTX Australia. I can't really explain it, but besides already liking her a lot, the silly faces, the carefree attitude, and being able to see a more human, spontaneus and totally adlidbed Yang instead of a carefully thought and scripted one was amazing for me. I realized how much fun she could be, and that's exactly the kind of girl I always fall for.

I see what you mean. I think your best bet would be to give your OC a convincing psychological trait. Maybe some characteristic or personal setback which he must overcome throughout the story. Even better, the relationship between him and Yang can reach deeper levels if they both help each other resolve their inner conflicts. Yang has a lot of material for that, what with her mother, her frustrations, anger, and reckless attitude. You could start from there.

The personal and psychological setbacks were kinda what I was planning to do, coincidentally enough.
I won't go into details, but this dude's past basically worked him up to be a damn good fighter, but is left with basically zero social or life skills. It's so bad to the point where he cannot properly function in most life settings, and doesn't know what to make of most situations outside of combat.
Either he's overwhelmed by the stuff that's happening, has no real emotional response to it, or is just entirely confused on what to do.
I'm thinking that he ends up getting along with Yang and he sees her almost as a "guide", teaching him what life is and what it "means to be human", as faggoty as that sounds.

May I give just one suggestion though: try giving Full Metal Panic a watch. The main character resembles the OC you've described: a teenager who's spent pretty much his whole life fighting and lacked what would be considered a normal childhood. Maybe you could get some sort of inspiration there, see how you could develop a character like your OC.
I'd love to read your story if you ever get it done, actually. I haven't read fanfiction in well over a decade, but it's Yang, so I'm willing to give it a go.

Honestly I hate both of these ships as well as Arkos to an extent. Most the people who support them are extremely autistic and if you dare say don't think any of them are an OTP, They will go out of their way to try and argue you with autistic walls of text. If anything those pairings won't happen. Yang and Blake have shown interest in males especially Blake who was blushing when Sun winked at her. Right now Yang would hate Blake right now because she was abandoned at her time of need.
When it comes to Ruby and Weiss, I don't see that happening ever. The only moment they had was when Weiss decided to let up a little and give Ruby a chance at being leader in Vol 1. Weiss seems to be attracted to Neptune and Ruby has shown no interest in girls let alone anything sexual. The most likely pairing for her would probably be Jaune unless they introduce a new male character. Jaune will most likely die to Cinder because Joan was burned at the stake if Pyrrha's death gives us any hints to what will happen to the characters.
I really don't like Yuri pairings because they always turn out like the ones in Korra where it was cop out and had no development. It was only done to please tumblr and go look how progressive we are and knowing RT's writers they might make it an even bigger flop
More characters like Sun need more love. I would say Neptune as well but he basically is a second Jaune who can somehow pull off blue hair and be cool. I can't think of anyone else because many of the male characters had no development or screen time and Jaune is paired with everyone.

I wish there was no pairings so that people can be less autistic and obsessive but that will never happen. I would be a hypocrite to say that because I have my own ships. My current for RWBY that they hold off on the Romance for now. The only one that really happened with Arkos and I didn't like it because it boiled down to Jaune didn't recognize me that makes me super wet-Pyrrha. However I did think it added a lot to volume 3 and character development for Jaune. The point is that RWBY doesnt have to budget for longer episodes or the talented writers to pull it off. So far most romance happened off screen.
