Your best course of action is to lurk the chart thread and start picking off shows that you find interesting and/or lurk /a/ threads to help you decide what you want to pick up by reading discussions/looking at screenshots and weebms.
Personally I'd say you should start with the classics (see charts) while also picking up a couple of currently airing shows (see /a/)on the side.
