I'm only ever watched one magic girl anime (madoka) before, so feel free to recommend me something more well known. I want something short, enjoyable, and good character designs.

I'd say the best fit for a Madoka watcher who wants more mahou shoujo is Nanoha. First season of Nanoha is the same director, even.
If you'd rather see something much more representative of what the genre is like, though, you should watch Cardcaptor Sakura (not the one airing now because that's a sequel).
