I enjoyed the political subplots of Gurren Lagann a surprising amount, and now I'm watching Code Geass. Does anyone have other suggestions for anime with significant political storylines?

Legend of Galactic Heroes has enough of this to satisfy basically any one.
Almost any Gundam series, Ghost in the Shell, Planetes, Jin-Roh, Rose of Versailles, or ACCA-13 are some other examples of series where political intrigue is influencing a lot of what's happening, whether the characters are in control of it or not.

Good thing the first post was in here quick to help you out.
For fucks sakes man, this is a show that invents terms for classes of people. It spends 3 episodes on an in-universe historical documentary. It's motherfucking space Napoleon fighting in WW2 using WW1 tactics from his Roman empire fighting against the League of Nations. It's bloody fantastic.
