I'm not a huge fan of mech anime, but I want to watch Macross Delta. Are the previous million entries relevant/important to have seen before watching Delta, or it's a mostly standalone anime?

Why do you want to watch Delta over the other entries? SDF Macross is more mecha than anything else Macross related.

The others are even longer, and in the first place I was interested in it because of the music, but if it's a shit anime I'll just give it a pass, I'm not really dead-set on watching any of it.

Ah ok, that should be fine then. I though you wanted a pure mecha anime. In relation to your original question it's somewhat standalone. There might be small things that tie back to other parts of Macross but it won't destroy the show for you.
