Because if you're obsessed with virtue signaling, you won't stop at some candy-ass vegetarianism.

Excellent thread idea. Long may it wave.
>I can’t believe that, on a blog post concerning the work conditions of residents in the UK, you people still somehow find a way to shoehorn in your hobby horses, which, just as a daily reminder, the Western world outside SSC believes to be somewhere between antiquated and abominable.
1) you're not even getting mad at the guy who brought this subject up, you're getting mad at the guy who responded in a way you didn't like to the guy who brought this subject up
2) Holy shit, it's the Current Year? Guess we're all wrong, pack it up and go home lads.

I gotta give the correct answer to this as well, since your dismissal of it as "virtue-signaling" is so annoying. Here it is. Veganism is better than vegetarianism milk and especially egg production involves a lot of unnecessary animal suffering, and vegans don't consume milk or eggs but vegetarians do.

Based on the, like, 3 bits of data I have here, I'm going to say that I never really liked Ozy as much as I liked Scott.
A weak claim for a reader of Slate Star Codex, I know.
But it seemed to me that Ozy was getting additional epistemic weight in Scott's mind because she was a girl he could cuddle.
Shocking, I know.
However– I'll move on to stronger claims now– I'm sort of glad to see less Ozy influence on Scott/Slate Star Codex. I mean, it's unfortunate that Scott lost someone he considered cute from his harem (rightful caliph etc etc), but I never thought Ozy's contributions to SSC ever surpassed the quality of "random internet blogger maybe vaguely associated with LessWrong", with the possible exception of http://slatestarcodex.com/2015/01/11/the-phatic-and-the-anti-inductive/
As I'm sure you're aware, "random internet person" dilutes the Pure Concentrated Scott of Slate Star Codex to 999,990 ppm– unacceptably low levels.
That being said (in a largely phatic way, as I currently have no beef with anyone involved) I would love to read a more comprehensive account of the *drama*. If you aren't comfortable sharing it on a public forum (probably a good idea) you can contact me at [email protected]/* */, until I forget about that email address in about 2 weeks.

Everybody lost their minds! Which is understandable and not entirely the fault of the left like the author says. His vision of deviancy as taboo and something to be done in private is perfect but that's not how it worked for a lot of people, like Turing.
The "right" overreacts with appalling results as much as the left does, christianity is far from having a healthy relationship with sexuality, not only when it comes to deviancy, they also get modesty wrong (Sinfully wrong!) and many more things.
The second you start castrating homosexuals, being disquieted by human nudity or just rejecting pleasure and sensuality as something essentially bad, you are as stupid as the faggots trying to "get married", the trannies asking for special pronouns and all that crowd.
The East (Indian tradition, for example) should serve as our inspiration, not the things that led us to this sad situation in the first place.

The problem was he purged all frequent commentors to the right of him out of the comments, which means that he had only enemies in his comments. And, being the rightmost, was persecuted. He has stopped posting on politics, I assume as a result of this persecution.

Maybe in some technical points sense, given the rules and scoring mechanisms of competitive TKD. (See also https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEDaCIDvj6I). In the sense of actually putting him on the canvas, no, unless she's Ann Wolfe.
I agree that anything taught as self-defense (fug ids da crab magoo :DDDDD) is likely to be rubbish. Without frequent practice at pretty near full force, fighting won't be instinctual enough. On the other hand, sport martial arts can be quite valuable if, unlike TKD, they actually involve a fair bit of full-force violence–which as a practical matter means that the very best woman in the world will win about half the time against a decently good male high school competitor of the same size. The tails of the normal distributions behave in their usual fashion, bearing in mind the difference in mean weight, height, and reach as well.

My prior is that if you are an adult man and prancing around in pajamas you've got issues. Even if you call it a "martial art".
If you want to defend yourself get a gun and learn how to use it. (And yes the guys that take their guns, dress up in pajamas and play weekend commando have issues too.)

Fighting is a lot of fun and many people, including most men I know, find it very rewarding. Granted, fighting sports need not involve any costume more elaborate than gym shorts. But judo (for instance) is legit as hell and employs a fair bit of pageantry–and it seems to me that the pageantry is to the benefit of the sport's culture.
>get a gun and learn how to use it
>but don't actually take it seriously or anything, because that would be cringy and embarrassing
I'm not sure how nuanced your understanding of firearms training is, but learning how to use a pistol or rifle in a combat scenario involves a good deal more than sedate target shooting by one's self on a square range. If Gunsite Academy or Valor Ridge is your idea of "weekend commando", my paraphrase above is basically accurate.
I dunno. Not everybody has to like the same things, but this post just smacks of ressentiment. The fun and psychic rewards of fighting ability can be yours, too, if you care to put in the work. (Well, maybe not firearms if you are so unfortunate as to live in a country that prohibits them, but otherwise…).

Judo is a crap sport mostly because of a dumb scoring system. I know they got it from wrestling, it's a crap scoring system there too.
That said, the "pageantry" certainly doesn't help. On the contrary it attracts the weeaboos.
It terms of firearms training, you know who liked to spend a lot of time preparing for "combat scenarios"? George Zimmerman.
Your house isn't going to be invaded by a team of ninjas. You aren't going to be attacking any fortified positions. You aren't going to single handedly stop a terrorist attack. You don't need to blend in to any jungles or deserts with those ridiculous patterned pajamas.

Well, I gotta admit, I'm a little confused. What's your idea of a good scoring system? When I say judo is "pretty good", I mean it's fun, useful (having gone up against a few pretty good judoka as a wrestler), has a robust competitive scene, that sort of thing. I agree that Olympic judo has bad rules in that it tends to encourage participants to hop around and go for the one big throw rather than shoot takedowns or go for submissions.
>It terms of firearms training, you know who liked to spend a lot of time preparing for "combat scenarios"? George Zimmerman.
He lived, Trayvon didn't. I consider that a pretty good argument for serious firearms training rather than sedate plinking at the range.
If you're gonna "learn how to use" a pistol, that entails things like drawing from concealment (if you're going to carry the thing), firing multiple shots in rapid succession, shooting while moving (get off the X), weapon retention, shooting in low light, things like that. All but the first are also relevant for using a long gun for home defense.
As I say, if your understanding of firearms training labels all that as "silly ninja stuff", you're not just opposed to ineffective self-defense preparation–you're opposed to serious self-defense preparation as well.

Fighting sport matches should be ended by submission whenever possible. The art part of martial arts is just fluff.
As for Zimmerman, yeah he lived. He also got himself involved in a situation he never should have been in because he decided he wanted to play batman. It cost him his freedom for a significant amount of time. All his neighbors lived and didn't have to jail.
As for the commando schools: if you learn how to cook fried chicken, that's a useful skill. If you learn how to cook turducken, now your just geeking out on a hobby. Nothing wrong with that per se, but the worst are people that try to convince you that their hobby isn't *really* a hobby at all but a critical life skill.

>Fighting sport matches should be ended by submission whenever possible.
true, but my impression is that judoka, for instance, tend to do all right in submission fighting. Not scared of violence. & it makes sense to enact rules that let fights end by other things in order to be able to fight regularly at full force so you can develop instinctual responses and so on without developing health problems from constantly getting knocked out or choked out. which is why the death-dealing art of commando self-defense that is krav maga is basically a joke and the sports-with-rules judo, wrestling, boxing, BJJ, and muay thai consistently produce competent fighters.
>As for the commando schools
I disagree that those people are "the worst" as opposed to "perfectly normal human beings with a different hobby than yours." I also disagree, I think, about what exactly constitutes turducken and what constitutes fried chicken. But like the fellow said, you can do whatever the fuck you wanna do.

You don't need any of those things (maaaybe weapon retention). You buy a pistol to get knife thugs to leave you alone, not to play commando.
They're obviously helpful, but you don't need to do courses on all that stuff. You get most of the positive effect of a gun by purchasing one, you don't need to be SWAT to drive away someone with it. The training will help mostly against other gunslingers and that's not a case you want to escalate in in the first place.
The point is, self defense training requires many hours of work to just have a chance at driving off an attacker, and probably still won't help if you're a woman. Guns will work without training or with much less of it, although practice is obviously helpful. Nether will work without the resolve to hurt a person.

No, you retard, you're accusing of injecting politics because you started the comment chain with wonderful phrases such as
>This is the sort of noxious gender-role nonsense that I’m glad is going the way of the dodo.
and then followed up with gems like:
>If my children are anything like me, they’ll be proud that I didn’t make the decision on the basis of how knuckle-dragging bigots might react.
>but, fortunately, these are mostly aging white folk who will be irrelevant or dead by the time my offspring are old enough to go out into the world.
>Ironically, it’s the conformist swine who live in fear of what others might think that are really politicizing the matter.
I fear more for the fact that your children will have a gigantic faggot of a father than for whatever name you're going to give them. That is, if it seemed likely that you were going to reproduce.

I consider them perfect counterparts. Take for example, how one of Moldbug's points is that the media has a progressive bias. He mainly supports this with 300 pages of swanning about Darkly Implying things like some sort of continental philosopher. One of Jill's first posts? That she believes the media has a strong anti-left bias.
Both of these are obviously just hostile media perception, and come to think of it I'm basically positing that one type of stupid will show that a similar type of stupid proves too much.

>When you read a claim about the male/female wage difference or how much less blacks make on average than whites, it is taken for granted that it demonstrates the existence and scale of discrimination. That claim depends on an assumption about average racial (or gender) characteristics–an assumption which there is no evidence for and lots of evidence against.
>And if anyone points that out he gets the sort of response Jill recently demonstrated–the assumption that anyone who points it out want to ban blacks or women from certain jobs, not let them vote, … .
>The obvious explanation for that behavior is that people making the discrimination claim know that the evidence they offer does not support the conclusion they reach without the assumption that average characteristics are the same, and so want to shut up anyone who points out that the assumption is false.

No, that's just to cover the racial categories other than Black and White (and Asian, I guess, if it's "BAME"). Welsh, Scottish and Irish people are considered White. So are gypsies and Polish people. Arabs and mixed-race people are considered neither White, Black nor Asian. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Classification_of_ethnicity_in_the_United_Kingdom.
Also, it's usually "BME" rather than "BAME". So Asians usually come under the "minority ethnics". Although Blacks are clearly "minority ethnics" too. I don't know why they're separated out. Maybe just because acronyms with only two letters feel wrong.

>"Not surprising. A huge number of people, especially older people, still find trans people 'icky' or baffling; the good old meme-generator is churning away, trying to find acceptable reasons to express those feelings without losing too many progressive-points."
Yeah, I'm sure someone will call this a charitable description of their opinion and not a gross mischaracterization. At least he wasn't participating in a community that values such clarity.
>2 hours later
>"It's almost like that, except for being nothing like that.
>See if you can come up with a version that passes the ideological Turing test."
Oh, so you do agree with the community norms, but they just don't apply to you.
>any example of progressives behaving badly
>"I almost never encounter the cartoonish rhetoric and vitriol that people on here seem to assume is standard for all progressive culture, it all looks like strawmen with no basis in day-to-day reality to me."
I bet if you grepped all of his posts for "never seen" you could make the case that he is Ray Charles.
I thought the point of giving token "lefties" (that is idpol true believers, the median commenter is probably to the left of Obama which apparently means they are far-right) privilege was to have people constructively argue from that position and give cover against accusations of being a hive of scum and villainy.
Given that all of them are just bags of water and cognitive biases they obviously fail on the first and their presence and Scott's ever increasing thumb on the balance for them has not kept the wolves at bay, what purpose do they serve?

This is just a rhetorical flourish, right? Because I'd have expected very much the opposite.
I don't have enough hubris to say I would've expected a clever argument about ~context~ and ~nuance~, and the government taking an official position on the matter of cutting bits of babies dicks off being a bridge too far, because something something ~marketplace of ideas~, something something ~utilitarianism~.
But that is exactly what you got, and surely someone – someone! – could have predicted it.
