I agree that anything taught as self-defense (fug ids da crab magoo :DDDDD) is likely to be rubbish. Without frequent practice at pretty near full force, fighting won't be instinctual enough. On the other hand, sport martial arts can be quite valuable if, unlike TKD, they actually involve a fair bit of full-force violence–which as a practical matter means that the very best woman in the world will win about half the time against a decently good male high school competitor of the same size. The tails of the normal distributions behave in their usual fashion, bearing in mind the difference in mean weight, height, and reach as well.

true, but my impression is that judoka, for instance, tend to do all right in submission fighting. Not scared of violence. & it makes sense to enact rules that let fights end by other things in order to be able to fight regularly at full force so you can develop instinctual responses and so on without developing health problems from constantly getting knocked out or choked out. which is why the death-dealing art of commando self-defense that is krav maga is basically a joke and the sports-with-rules judo, wrestling, boxing, BJJ, and muay thai consistently produce competent fighters.
