> 16. Meditations on Moloch

> Read the original essay here. Do note that I read an older version. The author made many changes since its publication that I consider dishonest and cowardly. To read along with my narration, go here.

First link doesn't work, wayback machine doesn't work either for some reason on two browsers… Anyone has the original?

What "dishonest and cowardly" changes did Scott make?

It seems like the biggest changes were removing references to neoreaction. Maybe that upset him?

It was definitely better with

>Chronology is a harsh master. You read three totally unrelated things at the same time and they start seeming like obviously connected blind-man-and-elephant style groping at different aspects of the same fiendishly-hard-to-express point.

>This post is me trying to throw the elephant right at you at ninety miles an hour, except I digress into poetry and mysticism and it ends up being a confusing symbolically-laden elephant full of weird literary criticism and fringe futurology. If you want something sober, go read the one about SSRIs again.

"Dishonest" is a stretch, but I can understand calling those changes cowardly if your standard for cowardliness includes changing your old post to avoid Internet backlash from pattern-matching automatons without indicating that it has been changed. However, to call another blogger's changes to his writing "dishonest and cowardly" when you are creating an audio version of it, one that if you get popular people will link to when they link to the writing itself, is bad form and stirring up drama.

No one wants to read a long essay that starts with "I digress into poetry and mysticism and it ends up being a confusing symbolically-laden elephant full of weird literary criticism and fringe futurology. If you want something sober, go read the one about SSRIs again."

If I wasn't familiar with SSC I would close the tab then.

While I sympathize with him erasing neoreaction for the reasons you point out, I'm a bit miffed that he also erased references to Azathoth, the Lesswrong proto-Gnon. Eliezer's use of Azathoth as a metaphor for evolution as the Blind Idiot God was part of the intellectual milieu of the time, was probably causal in Warg and friends hashing out Gnon, and less defensible since the pattern matching morons are unlikely to understand the reference.

Which is another point. Why does every author need to name a new meme god? It was original when Eliezer did it. Now we have like 4+ names for basically the same concept. And and fucking "elua" the god of embedded scripting languages… er niceness or something.

It's fun. First time I read Moloch ( I actually read this before getting into lw and stuff ) I felt like a theist again.

That's Grognor, right? Apparently, he died. I haven't seen any details beyond someone on WST announcing it.
