Nearly 1,000 people gathered in a picturesque Alpine valley this week to celebrate a movement that advocates cloning to promote human happiness.

The Swiss-based movement follows the teachings of a 50-ish Frenchman who goes by the name Rael and who says he has been visited by creatures from another planet. Rael believes that, like characters in the Hollywood movie, Contact, extraterrestrials are linked to people on Earth.

The movement grabbed headlines in June by offering human cloning services, urging those who were interested to write to its Geneva post-office box.

Rael claims to have been contacted in 1973 by almond-eyed aliens who created mankind in laboratories and who will return to Earth one day.

The Raelian movement, which says that it has 35,000 members in 85 countries, is quite strong in Switzerland, said Brigitte Boisellier, the movement's spokeswoman.

The Swiss are tolerant, said Dr. Boisellier, a chemist, explaining that the group feels more comfortable meeting here than in France. They have respect for beliefs.

Although Switzerland is dominated by the Protestant and Catholic religions, its longtime history of tolerance has made it fertile ground for a number of unusual faiths.

But recently, the phenomenon has grown, at a time when the pristine mountain nation, with one of the world's best-educated and wealthiest populations, is undergoing its worst economic downturn since World War II and is being buffeted by charges about its conduct during the war. The acccusations have seriously tarnished the country's national mythology.

Six years of recession has ended decades of prosperity that made Switzerland's living standards the envy of nearly every European neighbor.

The Swiss involvement in cults was spotlighted in 1994 by the deaths of 48 members of the Order of the Solar Temple. Swiss professors who have studied cults estimate that there are 90 to 120 such groups in the Geneva area alone.

There are only a small number of people belonging to all these sects – it's probably not even 1 percent of the population, said Roland Campiche, an expert in the subject at a Lausanne-based center for religious studies. But it is a very significant phenomenon.

Geneva, known as the Protestant Rome in the 16th century, was once ruled by the stern morality of John Calvin, who permitted little deviation from his faith.

But Switzerland enshrined religious freedom in its Constitution a century ago as a result of a Catholic revolt against the Protestant-dominated central Government.

The Swiss, in contrast to their often dour exteriors, need to be a little bit crazy, said Georg Schmid, a professor who also operates a cult information center in Zurich. We have a hidden side. We often live this out in our religion. It's our relief and our escape.

Occult practices are also popular in Switzerland.

The Swiss fascination with nontraditional beliefs could be seen at a recent Geneva fair that featured 22 European psychics.

Growing disaffection with established churches also has driven people to alternatives, said Philippe Borgeaud, a professor of religious history at Geneva University.

People have an appetite to believe something, he said. But the sects don't only provide spirituality, they give a power or importance to people who are lacking it.

The New York Times’ “1619 Project” is getting the full Hollywood treatment, thanks to Lionsgate and Oprah Winfrey.

Under the deal, the controversial series of articles that sought to reframe American history around slavery will be adapted for the big and small screens — feature films, television series, documentaries, and various forms of unscripted content. Lionsgate will serve as the studio while Winfrey has come aboard as a producer.

“We took very seriously our duty to find TV and film partners that would respect and honor the work and mission of ‘The 1619 Project,’ that understood our vision and deep moral obligation to doing justice to these stories,” Nikole Hannah-Jones, the Times reporter who spearheaded the project, said in a statement to The Root, which first reported the deal.

Hannah-Jones called Oprah Winfrey “a trailblazer and beacon to so many Black journalists.” She added: “I am excited for this opportunity to extend the breadth and reach of ‘The 1619 Project’ and to introduce these stories of Black resistance and resilience to even more American households.”

Winfrey tweeted: “When the #1619Project came out almost a year ago, I stood in tearful applause for the profound offering that it was giving our culture and nation. Today, I am honored to be a part of @nhannahjones’ vision to bring her transformative work to a global audience. Stay tuned, y’all!”

“The 1619 Project” was published last year in the New York Times Magazine. The series’ central theme was that America’s true founding wasn’t 1776 but 1619 — the year that slaves from Africa were first brought to the colonies.

The series sparked almost instant controversy by claiming that the Revolutionary War was fought to preserve slavery. Several prominent historians, including one who consulted on the series, have disputed the claim and called out Nikole Hannah-Jones’ central essay for factual inaccuracies.

The Times mostly ignored the objections and Hannah-Jones won a Pulitzer Prize. Hannah-Jones made headlines last month after she said it’d be an “honor” if violent and deadly riots in the wake of George Floyd’s death were remembered as the “1619 Riots.”

Romney, Collins, Murkowski won't attend GOP convention

Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) will not attend the GOP convention next month in Florida, aides for the senators confirmed to The Hill.

An aide for Collins noted that she was never planning to attend the GOP convention because she does not go when she herself is up for reelection. Collins is in a tight race this year that could be pivotal in determining who holds the Senate majority in the next Congress.

Spokespeople for Romney and Murkowski didn't immediately respond to follow-up questions about whether their plans were related to the coronavirus as the country sees an increase in cases.

Both senators have had high-profile clashes with Trump; Romney was the only Republican senator to vote to impeach the president earlier this year, while Murkowski opposed ObamaCare's repeal and Supreme Justice Brett Kavanaugh's nomination.

Romney declined last month to say who he's voting for but indicated to The Atlantic in February that he could write in his wife's name, which is what he did in 2016.

"I’m not going to be describing who I’ll be voting for, I don't imagine," Romney told reporters last month.

Murkowski, who did not vote for Trump in 2016, told reporters last month that she was "struggling" with whether support him in November.

The three GOP senators are the latest Republican lawmakers to say this week that they do not plan to attend the convention.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the oldest Republican senator, on Monday became the first to formally say he would skip the gathering. He told Iowa reporters that he would not attend because of the coronavirus.

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), who is retiring at the end of the year, also announced Tuesday that he would not attend, with his office saying he was saving delegate spots for people who had not previously gone to a party convention.

Republicans announced last month that they were moving the main events, including Trump's speech accepting the party's nomination, from Charlotte, N.C., to Jacksonville, Fla., amid a break with North Carolina's governor over whether the convention could go forward without social distancing measures in place.

Florida is seeing an uptick in its number of coronavirus cases and reported 11,458 new cases on July 4, marking an all-time single-day high.

Several other GOP senators have indicated that their convention plans are in flux.

Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) told a Wisconsin TV station late last week that he hadn't yet made a decision on attending, adding that he wanted to know "what kind of social distancing, what kind of precautions are being taken."

Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio) told Ohio reporters last month that he wanted to "see what the situation is" on the coronavirus before making a decision.

Even as some GOP senators announced that they would not be attending, some of their colleagues confirmed they would attend.

A spokesman for Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said that "the leader has every intention of attending."

Oregon politician Jonathan Lopez confesses to writing a racist and homophobic letter to himself in June, and claiming it had been left anonymously in his mailbox, police revealed Monday.

a French chemist and Raëlian religious leader best known for her claim to have overseen the creation of the first human clone. A native of Champagne-Ardenne, she studied chemistry in France and the United States, earning two PhDs. After a court in Florida launched a child welfare investigation, she stated that the cloned child's parents had withdrawn their offer to provide evidence of the cloning and would have no further public comment. Romania Dismantles Third Human Trafficking Ring in Four Days

Romanian prosecutors on Friday announced the dismantling of a human trafficking syndicate that forced young girls into prostitution in the south of the country, in the third such operation against groups dedicated to exploiting women in only four days.

The action came after the US Government’s 2020 Trafficking in Persons Report warned of Romania’s lack of progress in fighting human trafficking and human exploitation. It noted that the authorities had “investigated, prosecuted and convicted fewer traffickers” than last year, and rang alarm bells about the lack of proactive measures taken to prevent human trafficking or protect victims.

A statement on Friday from the prosecution body set up to combat organised crime said: “In this case, it has been established that, between March and July 2020, the members of the criminal group recruited, through the lover-boy method, several minor female victims who were threatened and obliged to practice prostitution in the Giurgiu county and the Bucharest municipality.”

The so-called “lover-boy method” consists of the trafficker luring or grooming the girl into a pretended relationship in order to gain her confidence and draw her into forced prostitution.

Two suspects have been arrested and presented before a court in Giurgiu, near the border with Bulgaria. A judge will decide on the prosecutors’ petition that the alleged traffickers remain in custody for 30 days.

On Tuesday, prosecutors in the Black Sea port city of Constanta arrested and brought to justice eight people who “in the period 2019 to 2020 recruited and housed several minor victims with the aim of exploiting them through forced prostitution”.

Also on Tuesday, the prosecution body specializing in organised crime arrested four other people as part of a group constituted last year that lured poor teenagers into prostitution, all through the lover-boy method. The teens were forced to perform sexual work under threat in various apartments in the town of Petrila, in Hunedoara County, in western Romania.

In a separate case, prosecutors on Thursday said 15 people arrested last year, including three police officers and another state official, will be tried for crimes ranging from child sex trafficking to child pornography and prostitution.

The suspects were arrested after police discovered a clandestine brothel that had been set up in a food factory in Bacau, in northeast Romania.

According to prosecutors, several minors aged between 14 and 17, who often came from poor rural areas, were initiated into the use of cocaine and were sexually exploited on the premises.

Romania, together with Ireland, is the only EU country put in the so-called Tier 2-Watch List of the US Government’s 2020 Trafficking in Persons Report. The other EU countries were classified as Tier 1 or as simply Tier 2.

Coca-Cola would like you to know that it cares about oppression and believes America is evil.

In a rambling statement by CEO James Quincey, titled, "Where We Stand on Social Justice", the head of the obesity conglomerate declared that he is, "outraged, sad, frustrated, angry."

It’s hard that out there for a guy in a racist country who is only making an $18 million salary.

The Coke CEO then pledged to give money to the social justice usual suspects and the company joined a boycott of Facebook to pressure it into censoring Trump and conservatives.

"Companies like ours must speak up as allies to the Black Lives Matter movement," Quincey ranted. "I’ve been reflecting on our duty to Black people in America. Simply put, America hasn’t made enough progress, corporate America hasn’t made enough progress and nor has The Coca-Cola Company."

While Coca-Cola pounds the Black Lives Matter pulpit, it’s got a present-day slavery problem.

The Congressional-Executive Commission on China had released a report in March on China's forced labor practices. The CECC is a bipartisan group that includes a wide range of national politicians from Senator Tom Cotton and Senator Marco Rubio to Senator Dianne Feinstein and Rep. Marcy Kaptur.

That report led to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act which, among others, named Coca Cola and Nike. Why did the media bury the story? Because it had bad things to say about its advertisers.

The CECC report and the accompanying legislation noted that Coca-Cola, Adidas, Calvin Klein, the Campbell Soup Company, Costco, Esprit, H&M, Tommy Hilfiger, Patagonia, and Nike were among those companies suspected of complicity in China's forced labor camps.

Coke and some of the other companies involved denied everything, but a Wall Street Journal article noted that COFCO Tunhe supplies sugar to Coca-Cola and tomatoes to Heinz and Campbell. The Chinese state-owned company is the country’s largest food processor, the world’s second largest tomato processor, and one of the largest sugar processors in the world, with vast networks of plantations.

The corporations that decry racism in America allegedly benefit from the new Communist plantations.
