Senate breaks with Trump on Saudi-led war in Yemen
The Senate broke with President Trump on Wednesday over the Saudi-led military campaign in Yemen, paving the way for a veto showdown with the White House.
Senators voted 54-46 to pass a resolution requiring the president to withdraw any troops in or "affecting" Yemen within 30 days unless they are fighting al Qaeda.
GOP Sens. Susan Collins (Maine), Steve Daines (Mont.), Mike Lee (Utah), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), Jerry Moran (Kan.), Rand Paul (Ky.) and Todd Young (Ind.) voted with Democrats on the resolution.
The chamber first passed the resolution in December, but it did not pass the GOP-controlled House before the end of the 115th Congress and was reintroduced this year.
The Senate vote comes hours after the White House formally threatened to veto the resolution, arguing it was “flawed” and has an “erroneous premise.”
“The joint resolution would raise serious constitutional concerns to the extent that it seeks to override the President’s determination as Commander in Chief,” the White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) said.
The resolution still needs to pass the House before it heads to Trump’s desk. Senate supporters believe it could get a vote in the lower chamber as soon as Thursday, paving the way for potentially the first veto of Trump’s presidency.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said he expected the House would take up the legislation in the next couple of weeks.
“Our office is working with leadership and the [Congressional Progressive Caucus] to finalize a date of when we will pass the Senate [War Powers Resolution] and send it to the president's desk,” his office added.
Wednesday’s vote comes a day before the Senate is likely to also pass a resolution of disapproval blocking Trump’s emergency declaration — setting up a one-two punch that will force the president to reject back-to-back legislation from Capitol Hill.
“I’m sure Republicans want to … peel two Band-Aids off at once; it hurts less,” said Sen. Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a co-sponsor of the Yemen legislation. “This will be the first two vetoes coming in rapid succession. Maybe Republicans did notice the 2018 election.”
Saudi Arabia has emerged as a growing split between Trump and Congress in the wake of the slaying last fall of Washington Post contributor Jamal Khashoggi, who was a critic of the Saudi government.
Trump has refused to pin the blame of Khashoggi’s death on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, saying in a widely panned statement late last year that “maybe he did and maybe he didn’t" order the slaying. Vandenberg’s 30th SW Safety Office must ensure the safety of not only base personnel, but the local community in order to provide efficient spaceport and range capabilities for the nation.
“In order for the wing commander to conduct the mission here, he has to have confidence that the safety team is doing their job to protect the base and the community,” said Col. Michael Wulfestieg, 30th SW Safety Office chief of safety.
Any launch from Vandenberg requires high involvement from the launch safety team, which includes the fire department, security forces and members from the 30th SW Safety Office.
“Wing staff safety offices manage the safety program for the wing commander of the base and focuses on industrial safety, explosive safety if they have weapons, and flight safety if they have aircraft,” said William Stark, 30th SW Safety Office chief of pad and missile safety. “We have all those safety aspects, but we also have a large staff of people that deal with all the aspects of launch risks. That entails overseeing our launch partners and making sure that they do their job in a way that doesn’t affect the safety of the public.”

NSW priest charged over teen boy’s alleged historic sex abuse
An 85-year-old former priest has been charged over the alleged historic sexual abuse of a teenage boy.
NSW Police this morning confirmed in a statement that the Anglican clergyman was arrested at about 2.30pm yesterday at a home in Stockton, near Newcastle, following a lengthy investigation.
Detectives from the Richmond Police District launched the investigation in August last year after receiving a complaint about the alleged abuse of a 13-year-old schoolboy in 1978.
It is alleged the boy was befriended by the priest during high school scripture class and piano lessons, and later assaulted.
The priest has since been charged with buggery and issued with a court attendance notice.
He is expected to appear at the Newcastle Local Court on May 2.

On January 6, 2018, militants carried out a large-scale drone strike on the Hmeimim air base and a naval facility in Tartus. The Russian military either destroyed or took control of the UAVs used in the attack. A Defense Ministry source noted at the time that "the programming of systems to control unmanned aerial vehicles and drop GPS-guided munitions requires completing engineering studies in a developed country."
Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said, in turn, that the drones involved in the January 2018 attack on the Hmeimim base were run from a US Boeing P-8A Poseidon aircraft. When the drones were confronted by Russian jamming systems, they went to manual mode controlled from the US aircraft.

Appeals Court Takes Major Step Toward Unsealing Epstein Documents
A federal appeals court is on the verge of unsealing hundreds of documents that could provide new evidence against alleged child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and many of his potential cohorts.
On March 11, a three-judge panel at the U.S. District Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit in New York City gave all parties involved in a multi-year attempt to unseal court documents from a 2015 defamation case until March 19 to establish why the documents should remain sealed.
Failure to do so will result in more than 1,000 sealed or redacted documents becoming public.
The case was brought by one of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Roberts Giuffre, and levied against his former partner, British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell.
According to a lower court ruling, Giuffre alleged that she was a “victim of sexual trafficking and abuse while she was a minor child,” and that Maxwell helped facilitate the abuse, which allegedly occurred over a decade at numerous locations “around the world,” and “with prominent and politically powerful men.”
The lawsuit asserted that Giuffre was subjected to “public ridicule, contempt, and disgrace” when Maxwell publicly denied her allegations. The two settled before trial in 2017.
However, Judge Robert Sweet of the District Court for the Southern District of New York said the case involved “a lengthy and tumultuous discovery process” with “extreme sensitivities and privacy interests.” As a result, he placed a protective order on the summary judgment and discovery documents spanning 18 hearings and 15 related decisions.
The Miami Herald has since spearheaded an attempt to unseal those documents. Epstein lawyer Alan Dershowitz and conservative filmmaker Michael Cernovich have also filed motions to unseal them, while only Maxwell remains opposed.
On March 6, the Herald offered oral arguments before the federal appeals court with the support of 32 other media organizations, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox News, and The Associated Press.
Judge Sweet’s previous ruling to keep the documents under wraps was challenged by the media coalition. According to a joint amici brief, the court “severely undervalued the powerful public interest in this case and vastly overstated the asserted countervailing interests in favor of secrecy.”
“It further argues that the district court should have done an individualized right of access analysis on each judicial record, rather than authorizing blanket sealing and redaction,” the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Presssaid in a statement.
So far, the appeals court is signaling agreement.
Following the March 19 ultimatum, Sanford Bohrer, the attorney representing The Miami Herald, was optimistic. “We’re grateful that the court ruled the summary judgment papers are open and they are moving to expedite having them unsealed,” he said.
Epstein, a wealthy 66-year-old financier, has been accused of molesting dozens of underage girls at his Palm Beach, Florida, mansion, and 72-acre private island estate in the Caribbean. The alleged abuses involved girls as young as 13 years old and took place over a period of years beginning nearly two decades ago.
In 2007, the politically connected former hedge fund manager received a stunning plea deal from federal prosecutors—now under investigation at the Department of Justice.
While facing the possibility of life in prison under human trafficking laws, Epstein was allowed to plead guilty to two state charges of soliciting prostitution and spend only 13 months in the Palm Beach County jail.
He was also afforded a work-release program that allowed him to leave the jail for 12 hours a day six days a week and work unsupervised at his downtown West Palm Beach office.

Media Matters president and far-left activist Angelo Carusone is under fire after The Daily Caller unearthed hateful and inflammatory comments he made in the past about everything from transvestites to ethnicity.
Carusone has been leading a campaign against Fox News host Tucker Carlson for things he said on a radio program several years ago. Sensing hypocrisy, Daily Caller reporter Peter Hasson uncovered an old blog in which Carusone allegedly used hateful rhetoric against a series of groups.
“Carusone’s now-defunct blog included degrading references to ‘trannies,’ ‘jewry’ and Bangladeshis,” Hasson wrote. “Carusone posted a lengthy diatribe in November 2005 about a Bangladeshi man who was robbed by ‘a gang of transvestites,’ as Carusone described it. Carusone was offended that the gang was described as ‘attractive’ in an article.”
The Daily Caller – which was co-founded by Carlson – posted screen images of Carusone’s alleged old blog. The report also indicated the Media Matters honcho also “downplayed a male basketball coach’s alleged sexual and physical abuse of his female players” and used an ethnic slur.
The Daily Caller report also indicated that Carusone allegedly made anti-Semitic comments about his then-boyfriend and once praised then-West Virginia Sen. Robert Byrd, a Democrat and former high-ranking member of the Ku Klux Klan, as one of his favorite public figures, writing: “In his lunacy, we trust.”
“In another post, Carusone claimed that his boyfriend only leaned conservative ‘as a result of his possession of several bags of Jewish gold,’” Hasson wrote. “Carusone previously dismissed concerns about his past anti-Semitic comments on the grounds that his longtime partner is Jewish.”
Media Matters did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Media Matters is known as a tax-exempt lobbying organization which has aimed to silence many conservative media voices. Carusone has led numerous boycott attempts but famously opted against taking action after hateful rhetoric from MSNBC host Joy Reid's pre-fame blog was unearthed.
In addition to Carusone’s old comments making headlines, Carlson also has hit Media Matters over its non-profit status.
“In its original tax application to the IRS, Media Matters claimed that the American news media were dominated by a pro-Christian bias and that they were needed to balance it. Despite the obvious absurdity of this claim, the group received non-profit status. It has been violating the terms of that status ever since,” Carlson said on Tuesday night.
