My son attends Cal Maritime, and told me about this situation when he came for spring break. Every year, mechanical engineering and marine transportation students go on a summer school 6-week cruise. As part of the cruise, they create a mural of their experience on a section of the wall on the ship.

This year, a new Muslim global studies student saw that some of the murals contained scantily clad women and complained to school authorities, and they decided all the murals should be painted over during spring break (after pictures were taken of them).

Furthermore (according to my son / no sauce), everybody's favorite Commandant was fired on the spot for opposing this erasing of history.

I could maybe understand covering up some of the murals she complained about if she actually had any need to board the ship and look at them. As a global studies student, she doesn't.

Fortunately, there wasn't enough time to paint over the murals before Spring break started, so there is time for this petition to make a difference.
