Bulgarian Journalist Found Raped And Murdered. She Was Covering Investigation Of Financial Frauds Of EU Politicians, Businessmen

On October 6th, a Bulgarian journalist, Viktoria Marinova was found brutally raped and murdered in Bulgaria’s northern town of Ruse.

The body of the 30-year-old woman was found by a passerby in bushes near the pier on the Danube river, according to Ruse regional prosecutor Georgy Georgiev. “Her mobile phone, car keys, glasses and part of her clothes were missing,” he said.

Initially, the Ministry of Interior confirmed the murder, without providing any additional information.

According to reports, later confirmed by the Interior Minister Mladen Marinov, prior to the murder Marinova was also raped. She was disfigured due to blows to the head and suffocated to death.

Prime Minister Boyko Borisov expressed hope that the investigation would succeed because of the “work that has been done.”

“Thanks to the large amount of DNA material collected it is just a matter of time before the perpetrator will be found,” he said.

Bulgarian Police is working on several versions, however there is no information that her killing is linked to her work.

She was a TV host, and her last aired show happened on September 30th when she interviewed investigative journalists Dimitar Stoyanov from the Bivol.bg website and Attila Biro from the Romanian Rise Project, about an investigation of alleged fraud with EU funds linked to big businessmen and politicians.

The pair were briefly detained by police, drawing condemnation from Reporters Without Borders (RSF).

Her colleagues from TVN were staggered by the event. “We are in shock. In no way, under any form, never have we received any threats – aimed at her or the television,” a journalist from TVN told AFP under a condition of anonymity, adding that he and his colleagues feared for their safety.

Bulgarian media reports said that over the last year Marinova had reported on an ongoing investigation into alleged corruption involving European Union funds for the broadcaster TVN. She also worked on a program focusing on social issues and was involved with charity work.

“With enormous pain and insurmountable grief the team of TVN television is experiencing the loss of our beloved colleague, Victoria Marinova,” TVN said in a statement. “Therefore we ask for sympathy for the sorrow of relatives and colleagues. A bow in her memory!”

The Committee to Protect Journalists called on Bulgarian authorities to conduct a “rigorous, thorough investigation” into the killing.

The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe’s (OSCE) media freedom representative Harlem Desir condemned Marinova’s killing on Twitter: “Shocked by horrific murder of investigative journalist Victoria Marinova in #Bulgaria. Urgently call for a full and thorough investigation. Those responsible must be held to account.”

The Committee to Protect Journalists called on Bulgarian authorities to conduct a “rigorous, thorough investigation” into the killing.

“CPJ is shocked by the barbaric murder of journalist Victoria Marinova,” said CPJ European Union Representative Tom Gibson in Brussels. “Bulgarian authorities must employ all efforts and resources to carry out an exhaustive inquiry and bring to justice those responsible.”

Bulgaria was ranked in the lower half regarding world press freedom, according to Reporters Without Borders. The country ranked 111th out of 180 countries.

Three journalists have been killed in the EU this year. Caruana Galizia was killed in a car bombing in October in Malta and Jan Kuciak was murdered in Slovakia in February.

A hoax that is gaining ground on Facebook has some worried about a new possible hack of the social network. Facebook says to disregard the message.

The hoax works by targeting a user's inbox on Messenger, with the message making it appear like the user could have a cloned profile.

Here's how it works: You receive a message from an existing Facebook friend telling you they've received a friend request from you. Then it says to check your account and to forward the message to all your friends. If you do pass the message along to your friends, the hoax spreads like an old school chain email or letter.

The message may look like this: ”Hi….I actually got another friend request from you yesterday…which I ignored so you may want to check your account. Hold your finger on the message until the forward button appears…then hit forward and all the people you want to forward too….I had to do the people individually. Good Luck!”

It's not the first time a cloning hoax has surfaced. A similar scam happened in the summer of 2016.

Facebook told NBC 7 that if you get a message such as this from an existing Facebook friend, just ignore it and don't forward it to anyone.

If you're concerned, you can check to make sure there isn't a duplicate account in your name.

Facebook officials said that despite all the hoax messages, there hasn't been an unusual increase in cloned accounts recently.

Scientists Have Connected The Brains of 3 People, Enabling Them to Share Thoughts

Neuroscientists have successfully hooked up a three-way brain connection to allow three people share their thoughts – and in this case, play a Tetris-style game. The team thinks this wild experiment could be scaled up to connect whole networks of people, and yes, it's as weird as it sounds.

It works through a combination of electroencephalograms (EEGs), for recording the electrical impulses that indicate brain activity, and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS), where neurons are stimulated using magnetic fields.

The researchers behind the new system have dubbed it BrainNet, and say it could eventually be used to connect many different minds together, even across the web.

But apart from opening up strange new methods of communication, BrainNet could actually teach us more about how the human brain functions on a deeper level.

"We present BrainNet which, to our knowledge, is the first multi-person non-invasive direct brain-to-brain interface for collaborative problem solving," write the researchers.

"The interface allows three human subjects to collaborate and solve a task using direct brain-to-brain communication."

In the experiment set up by the scientists, two 'senders' were connected to EEG electrodes and asked to play a Tetris-style game involving falling blocks. They had to decide whether each block needed rotating or not.

To do this, they were asked to stare at one of two flashing LEDs at either side of the screen – one flashing at 15 Hz and the other at 17 Hz – which produced different signals in the brain that the EEG could pick up on.

These choices were then relayed to a single 'receiver' through a TMS cap that could generate phantom flashes of light in the receiver's mind, known as phosphenes. The receiver couldn't see the whole game area, but had to rotate the falling block if a light flash signal was sent.

Across five different groups of three people, the researchers hit an average accuracy level of 81.25 percent, which is decent for a first try.

To add an extra layer of complexity to the game, the senders could add a second round of feedback indicating whether the receiver had made the right call.

Receivers were able to detect which of the senders was most reliable based on brain communications alone, which the researchers say shows promise for developing systems that deal with more real world scenarios where human unreliability would be a factor.

And while the current system can only transmit one 'bit' (or flash) of data at a time, the team from the University of Washington and Carnegie Mellon University thinks the setup can be expanded in the future.

The same group of researchers has previously been able to link up two brains successfully, getting participants to play a game of 20 questions against each other. Again, phantom phosphene flashes were used to transmit information, in this case "yes" or "no".

For now it's very slow and not fully reliable, and this work has yet to be peer-reviewed by the neuroscience community, but it's a glimpse at some fanciful ways we could be getting our thoughts across to each other in the future – maybe even pooling mental resources to try and tackle major problems.

"Our results raise the possibility of future brain-to-brain interfaces that enable cooperative problem solving by humans using a 'social network' of connected brains," writes the team.

When Guss Pickles, a Lower East Side institution for more than 90 years, closed in December after a bitter dispute with its Essex Street landlord, it looked as though there would be no pickles at all in a neighborhood that is as known for the briny gherkins as Chinatown is for dumplings or Little Italy for cannoli.

But last week, stomachs throughout the neighborhood stopped grumbling at the news that Alan Kaufman, a former Guss employee, had opened a new pickle store just a few doors up from the shuttered Guss site.

Meanwhile, Tim Baker, the owner of Guss Pickles who was Kaufman’s mentor and friend, announced that he was reopening – setting the stage for the first pickle war in decades.

This tale of betrayal, madness, jealousy and rage makes “King Lear” sound like a child’s bedtime story.

Consider the history: Baker hires Kaufman in 1981 and teaches him everything he knows about pickles – learned from history’s greatest pickle men.

But then Baker abandons the store to avoid, as he called it, “killing my landlord,” leaving Kaufman to run the shop.

By the time Baker got evicted, Kaufman was ready to fly solo.

“I can’t believe what Alan is doing to me,” Baker said as he made last-minute renovations to his new store at 87 Orchard St. “We were friends, and now he stabs me in the back.”

Kaufman tried to take the high road.

“I have no war with him,” said Kaufman, whose store, The Pickle Guys, still has that new-pickle smell. “But he knows I ran his operation for the last seven years.”

Behind the tale of betrayal is a bitter battle for the legacy of Lower East Side picklemaking. Where once there were 100 picklemakers, now there are only two.

And the accusations are flying. Former Guss employees even claim that Baker isn’t even making his own pickles, instead buying them from a Bronx factory – a charge that Baker deflected with his own attack.

Hussain's federal legal problems began after the 9/11 terrorist attacks when he was arrested in an FBI fraud investigation that targeted a ring of corrupt translators, state motor vehicle workers and nearly 100 immigrants who had illegally obtained driver's licenses with help from Hussain.

At the time, Hussain owned and operated a Getty gas station on South Pearl Street in Albany. He also worked as a translator for the state Department of Motor Vehicles, and had routinely accepted bribes of several hundred dollars each to help immigrants, who in some cases couldn't drive well, pass written exams they couldn't understand, according to court records.

Following his arrest in December 2001, and while facing the prospect of a long prison term and eventual deportation to his native Pakistan, Hussain agreed to become an informant for the FBI.

Hussain had emigrated to the U.S. in 1993 and still held a green card at the time he went to work for the FBI, which credited him with helping arrest more than a dozen people, including the people involved in the DMV scandal and a member of an Afghani-based heroin trafficking ring.

But it was Hussain's work as an informant in a controversial counter-terrorism sting in Albany that thrust him into the spotlight. He worked in an undercover role, posing as an arms dealer, to help federal authorities snare two immigrants with no criminal backgrounds at the time: Yassin Aref, an Iraqi refugee and imam of a Central Avenue mosque, and Mohammed Hussain, a Bangladeshi immigrant who owned a pizza shop.

Aref and Mohammed Hussain were both arrested in 2004 and accused of laundering money in connection with a fictitious terror plot set up by the FBI's informant.

They were convicted in 2006 and both sentenced to 15 years in federal prison. Aref was recently released from prison and is being held in custody pending his deportation to Iraq.

In May 2009, Hussain the informant resurfaced as an FBI informant when four men from Newburgh were charged with conspiring to plant explosives outside the Riverdale Jewish Center and Riverdale Temple in New York City. As in the Albany case, Shahed Hussain posed as a wealthy businessman and befriended the men before implicating them in a terror plot.

The four Newburgh men, Laguerre Payen, James Cromitie, Onta Williams and David Williams, were convicted but the FBI's use of Shahed Hussain drew harsh criticism and raised entrapment questions.

Three years later, in 2012, Hussain again took part in an undercover FBI sting, this time targeting a then-34-year-old man, Khalifah Al-Akili, who lived near Pittsburgh. Khalifah Al-Akili told the Times Union in an interview that year that the FBI had used in an apparent attempt to test Al-Akili's interest in jihad and anti-American views.

Al-Akili, who was later convicted of a firearms charge, said he was approached by Hussain, who went by the name "Mohammed," and another man, who used the name "Shareef," when they turned up in his neighborhood and repeatedly made attempts to get close to Al-Akili. But Al-Akili said he quickly figured out Hussain's identity as an FBI informant. He said the men were "too obvious" and requested receipts even for small items they purchased like coffee and donuts.

In addition, he said, a cell phone number Hussain had given him was the same number used by Hussain during the 2009 counterterrorism investigation against the four Newburgh men. Al-Akili said he found the number and its connection to that case through a simple Internet search using Google.

Although Hussain's undercover work had exposed his residency in Wilton, he never left the area and for years had lived a quiet life at the hardscrabble motel along Route 9 a few miles north of Saratoga Springs.

Cornett, the motel's manager, said they occasionally receive mail there related to the limo company, but that Hussain kept the vehicles at another location.

Several years ago, Hussain tangled with the town of Wilton for running his limo business out of the back of the hotel without a permit. Town officials asked that he keep the vehicles in Latham, where they had previously been stored when not in use.

Even as the beloved, traditional Jewish food establishments of the Lower East Side seem to be locked into an irrecoverable downward spiral — the death of Gertel’s bakery being the most recent example — a war has been raging over who is the legitimate heir to the Guss’s pickle empire that once ruled over Essex Street.

It is a war that evokes the fractious pushcart vendors on Hester Street — where Izzy Guss, a Russian émigré, founded his pickle business in the 1910s — but is now conducted against a backdrop of the modern-day, gentrified, luxury-condo-dominated neighborhood.

Izzy Guss just might be turning over in his grave.

Let’s recap some of the basics of this war, as Cara Buckley recounted last November.

Mr. Guss died in 1975. His store, which opened in 1920 on Hester Street and eventually moved to Essex Street, was sold to Harold Baker, whose son, Tim, a pickle apprentice and now master, eventually took over the business.

Guss’s Pickles had a longstanding relationship with the Leibowitz family — the patriarch Max, a son David, a grandson Stephen and now a great-grandson Andrew — who supplied the pickles and now co-own United Pickle Products in the Bronx. It is reputedly the largest family-owned pickle wholesaler on the East Coast.

In 2002, Andrew N. Leibowitz opened a Guss’s Pickles shop in Cedarhurst, N.Y. His father, Stephen A. Leibowitz, who calls himself chief pickle maven of United Pickle and supplies his son’s shop, says the family bought the rights to Guss’s Pickles from Mr. Baker. The family trademarked the name Guss’s Pickles that year.

Mr. Baker continued to run a Lower East Side store until 2004, when he decided to get out of the business to care for his ailing mother. Stephen Leibowitz says his family turned down an offer from Mr. Baker to buy the store.

In came Patricia Fairhurst, who bought the lease to the store — now on Orchard Street — and continued to use the name Guss’s Pickles. (Both she and the Leibowitz family actually use the name Guss’ Pickles, preserving the original punctuation and omitting the final S.)

Ms. Fairhurst and the Leibowitz family got along at first; she used the Guss name and bought the family’s pickles. That suddenly changed, according to the Leibowitzes, in 2006, when Ms. Fairhurst decided to buy her pickles from another supplier. The Leibowitzes asserted that she would have to stop using the Guss name. They set up a Guss’s Pickles Web site that asserts that theirs are the only true Guss’s Pickles.

Ms. Fairhurst retaliated by filing a federal lawsuit [pdf] in which she denied she was infringing on any trademark. She accused the Leibowitzes of unfair competition and “tortious interference.” The Leibowitz family, in answering the lawsuit [pdf], denied the accusations. The Leibowitzes also filed a counterclaim [pdf] asserting that they have the exclusive right to the Guss’s Pickles trademark.

Ms. Fairhurst has recently gone on a public relations offensive. In a New York Post article today, she criticized Whole Foods Market — including its newest branch, on Bowery in the Lower East Side — for carrying the Leibowitzes’ pickles. “They never came from me,” Ms. Fairhurst told The Post. “I am Guss’s Pickles.”

Not so, says Stephen Leibowitz. “She did not buy Guss’s Pickles,” he said in a phone interview. “She bought a pickle stand.”

For now, Whole Foods is standing by the Leibowitzes. “We’ve always carried these pickles, for many, many years,” said Fred Shank, a spokesman for the supermarket chain. “We believe we are selling the original Guss’s Pickles.”

The Lower East Side Tenement Museum, meanwhile, seems to be siding with Ms. Fairhurst. It has a Web page that is devoted to the fabled eateries of the neighborhood and that characterizes Ms. Fairhurst as the heir to the Guss tradition.

(Daniel Arnheim, a spokesman for the museum, says the Web site “was part of an ongoing series of articles meant to support and promote good will among local merchants.” He said in an e-mail message: “We’re not taking sides and don’t wish to be presented as taking sides in this dispute. … It was not intended as endorsing one purveyor vs. another.”)

Meanwhile — as if this could possibly get more complicated — a third pickle business, The Pickle Guys, was started in 2003 by Alan Kaufman and other former employees of Guss’s Pickles. They were dismayed that the original business had left Essex Street, its home for so many years. Mr. Kaufman’s Web site boasts, “Today we are the only pickle store that exists on Essex Street.”

All three businesses — Andrew Leibowitz’s Guss’s Pickles of Cedarhurst, N.Y.; Patricia Fairhurst’s Guss’s Pickles of Orchard Street; and Alan Kaufman’s Pickle Guys of Essex Street — say they sell rabbinically supervised kosher pickles. All are closed on Saturdays in observance of the Jewish Sabbath. All claim that their recipes are faithful to the traditions of Izzy Guss.

A sprawling mansion on the Upper East Side has been frozen as part of a hard-core battle between the US government and Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, The Post has learned.

US officials say Deripaska, an aluminum billionaire, is close both with Russian mob leaders and Russian President Vladimir Putin — and that he is on the sanctions list because he is allegedly involved in murder, money-laundering, bribery, and racketeering.

Deripaska also had President Trump’s ex-campaign manager Paul Manafort — who has been convicted of crimes including money-laundering and who is cooperating with US special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe — on his payroll for years.

Washington has frozen Deripaska’s US-based assets, including massive mansions in Manhattan and Washington, DC. But the feds are also negotiating with him to give up some of his European-based operations to keep them running free of sanctions, Treasury officials say.
