For those of you who don't quite understand what happened in the Senate Judiciary Committee on the Kavanaugh vote…. let me explain.

Jeff Flake, a Republican, was the weakest link on the entire committee, and wanted to kind of "ride the middle ground". He needed a way to vote YES to advance Kavanaugh out of committee and to the floor of the full senate for his final confirmation vote. He needed to be able to vote yes, while being seen as "middle of the road" and making it something that it really "pained" him to do.

He basically just bamboozled the Senate Democrats. They were pushing him HARD to vote no, because if they flip just ONE Republican on the committee, Kavanaugh doesn't go on. He made a deal with them, saying, "I will vote yes, but it will be contingent on the FBI conducting an investigation, okay?"

Democrats were like "Woah, you're gonna require an FBI investigation for your yes vote? Okay, we'll get on board with that!" So Flake came in to that committee room and asked to make a statement. Grassley allowed him to make the statement that he thinks the FBI should take AT MOST a week to investigate. Democrats, thinking that the vote was now a CONTINGENT vote, where the full senate would be BOUND by the committee's decision to have an FBI investigation, were confused.

In the confusion, Grassley asked the clerk to "call the roll" (a fancy term for taking a vote)… and while the Democrats were FRANTICALLY trying to figure out what the hell was going on, trying to interrupt, trying to ask questions, the clerk quickly called out each Senator's name to record their votes. 11 GOP voted yes… and while still confused by what's happened, the Democrats all voted no on the candidate.

Feinstein commented that she thought that the vote was basically "We are recommending this man to the full senate, but only if the FBI does a 1 week investigation"… she basically said as much…

But here's the dealio… the Senate Judiciary Committee does not have any authority to recommend an appointment with conditions. The vote was ONLY to pass the candidate to the full senate UNCONDITIONALLY…

Now, will Flake vote yes on the full senate vote? Not without that 1 week FBI investigation, I would presume… but here's the catch, and how Flake is operating to cover his ass.

The FBI gets a referral for these investigations. WITHIN THE HOUR, the FBI could come back and respond just like this:

"The FBI has no jurisdiction on these claims, and even if we did, there is not enough information or evidence to give us the probable cause to seek any warrants. We deem this request to be improper and invalid, and we hereby return the matter to the US Senate having concluded our 'investigation'."

Boom, the FBI requirement is fulfilled… Flake has his "cover" he needs to vote yes… and we can vote on Kavanaugh TOMORROW!

CBS Receives Subpoena Over Moonves Sexual Misconduct Allegations, "Culture Concerns"

The long arm of the #MeToo movement is knocking on CBS' door.

In an 8-K filing released late on Friday, CBS announced that it has received subpoenas tied to its probe into reports of alleged sexual misconduct of former Chairman and CEO, Les Moonves, and concerns about the working environment at the company.

The company said that that as it had announced previously on August 1, it hired two law firms to investigate allegations about Moonves as well as into CBS News and "cultural issues at all levels of CBS. This investigation is ongoing."

It also revealed that it had received subpoenas from the New York County District Attorney’s Office and the New York City Commission on Human Rights "regarding the subject matter of this investigation and related matters," and that the New York Attorney General's office has requested information as well.

In early September, CBS announced that former CEO Les Moonves was departing as part of a settlement with National Amusements, members of the Board of Directors of CBS and related parties, but the catalyst were allegations of sexual misconduct from six women, as reported by Ronan Farrow in the New Yorker.

Moonves and CBS would donate $20 million to one or more organizations that support the #MeToo movement and equality for women in the workplace. In retrospect, he may have wanted to throw in a million or two for the NY DA's office.

OBJECTIVE:

This study tested whether the quality of the patient-rated working alliance, measured early in treatment, predicted subsequent symptom reduction in chronically depressed patients. Secondarily, the study assessed whether the relationship between early alliance and response to treatment differed between patients receiving cognitive behavioral analysis system of psychotherapy (CBASP) vs. brief supportive psychotherapy (BSP).

METHOD:

395 adults (57% female; Mage = 46; 91% Caucasian) who met criteria for chronic depression and did not fully remit during a 12-week algorithm-based, open-label pharmacotherapy trial were randomized to receive either 16-20 sessions of CBASP or BSP in addition to continued, algorithm-based antidepressant medication. Of these, 224 patients completed the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Form at Weeks 2 or 4 of treatment. Blind raters assessed depressive symptoms at 2-week intervals across treatment using the Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression. Linear mixed models tested the association between early alliance and subsequent symptom ratings while accounting for early symptom change.

RESULTS:

A more positive early working alliance was associated with lower subsequent symptom ratings in both the CBASP and BSP, F(1, 1236) = 62.48, p < .001. In addition, the interaction between alliance and psychotherapy type was significant, such that alliance quality was more strongly associated with symptom ratings among those in the CBASP treatment group, F(1, 1234) = 8.31, p = .004.

CONCLUSIONS:

The results support the role of the therapeutic alliance as a predictor of outcome across dissimilar treatments for chronic depression. Contrary to expectations, the therapeutic alliance was more strongly related to outcome in CBASP, the more directive of the 2 therapies.
