Representatives from America’s tech giants are meeting in private to discuss strategies for countering “information operations” ahead of the midterm elections. The meeting comes amid growing concern over social media censorship.
The secret meeting, which will take place on Friday at Twitter’s headquarters in downtown San Francisco, will focus on “information operations, election protection, and the work we are all doing to tackle these challenges,” BuzzFeed News has reported, citing an email written by Facebook’s head of cybersecurity policy, Nathaniel Gleicher. A dozen companies, including Google, Microsoft, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, will reportedly be in attendance.

The final agenda item, according to the leaked email, will be to decide if the tech giants should meet regularly to discuss their anti-meddling measures.
Around 10 of the companies expected to participate in Friday’s meeting were present at a similar powwow attended by US intelligence officials. Held at Facebook’s headquarters in Menlo Park, California in May, the summit included a top official from the Department of Homeland Security, as well as a representative of the FBI’s newly formed “foreign influence” task force.
Social media companies have scrambled to reassure the US government that their platforms cannot be abused, after accusations of Russian meddling emerged in the wake of the 2016 presidential election.
As a result, tech giants have launched a crusade against so-called “Russian bots” and other undesirables detected on their platforms, in some cases deleting thousands of accounts – some of which have since been shown to be owned by legitimate users.
In recent weeks, Facebook, Google and Twitter have cracked down on “hate speech” and “fake news,” which in Facebook’s case is determined in partnership with the NATO-funded Atlantic Council. The bans and suspensions that have followed have been slammed by critics as thinly veiled censorship, with tech giants seemingly using the Russian meddling hysteria to target undesirable political speech.

The UN has devised internal guidelines for limiting cooperation with Syria until a "political transition" takes place there, and it was drafted without any consent from the Security Council, the Russian Foreign Ministry has said.
The document in question is entitled 'Parameters and Principles of UN Assistance in Syria,' the ministry wrote in a statement to RT. It was issued by the UN Secretariat in October 2017 and provides guidelines for the UN agencies and programs in their work with the war-torn country.

Moscow and Damascus have repeatedly urged the US to cooperate over the Rukban camp, with Russia offering to help with safe transportation of the refugees back to their homes. Senator Rand Paul rightly blasted the leadership of his own party this week when they blocked an amendment to defund Planned Parenthood. The government will continue handing hundreds of millions of dollars to a company that executes over 300 thousand human children every year. As the Republicans are in charge of the government, and have taken active measures to prevent the severing of the abortion industry's tax payer pipeline, it must be said that the Republican Party is funding Planned Parenthood. The Republican Party is taking money out of our pockets and giving it to the blood-soaked hands of baby killers. This is no longer just a Democrat initiative.
The Republicans are idiots as well as cowards, so they are also funding the Democrat Party while they fund abortions. Planned Parenthood, despite being a publicly subsidized organization, is somehow allowed to funnel millions back into the coffers of Democrat campaigns. This alone is enough reason to defund them. Though the millions of dead babies should be an even more pressing concern.
It's true that Trump partially defunded the organization a few months ago. By changing certain Health and Human Services rules, Planned Parenthood will be deprived of 50 million tax dollars every year. That's fine, but it's not even a drop in the bucket. It still leaves about half a billion dollars on the table. Trump did about as much as he could on his own. Congress needs to act on the rest, and it has not. We gave Republicans total control of the government and they have not even managed to stop the insanely unethical practice of funding abortion conglomerates.
Defunding Planned Parenthood should have been square one. A truly "pro-life" party would have gotten that done within the first week that it had the power to do so. But the Republican Party is not pro-life. Neither is it pro-small government or pro-financial responsibility. It would only need to fall into one of those categories to defund Planned Parenthood. It claims to fall into all three, despite rarely providing evidence on any count.

"They put the whole sidewalk inside the fence"
The homeless problem in Los Angeles has reached such horrendous levels that business owners have erected fences on the sidewalk to clear the way.
The Guardian reports that neighborhoods in both Skid Row and South Central have seen fully-erected chain-link fences pushing out from the place of business to the edge of the sidewalk. One homeless man named Gabe described it like a prison.
"They put the whole sidewalk inside the fence,” said Gabe. "I felt like we were in prison on the sidewalk. It felt like we were in prison and could get out, but still in prison, you know what I mean?"
"They push people to the back streets where there’s no lights," he continued. "Where it’s not safe."
Community organizers and homeless advocates have said the fences violate public space.
"Business owners] don’t own the sidewalk,” said General Dogon, a longtime community organizer at the Skid Row-based Los Angeles Community Action Network. "The sidewalk is designed as a public space. It’s for everyone."
Other parts of the city have employed other measures to keep the homeless away from businesses, such as sprinklers, spikes on the ground, and benches with arms to prevent public sleeping. A homeless man named José Luis said that planters in South Central have replaced the "home" he built for himself outside a building. Many of the homeless have left the area and now camp further out onto the sidewalk, thus blocking pedestrians.
Aside from fences, Los Angeles has battled its crippling homeless problem in other ways; one involves guest houses in people's backyards. According to Los Angeles Times, the county Board of Supervisors approved back in August a "$550,000 pilot program to build a handful of small backyard houses, or upgrade illegally converted garages, for homeowners who agree to host a homeless person or family."

Overall, Shin Bet estimated that 60 Israeli citizens have left the country since the conflict in Syria began in 2011 in order to fight on behalf of armed opposition groups, including Daesh and the Al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front. Fewer than 10 are believed to have returned to Israel since fighting in Syria began. The Jerusalem Post further notes that “dozens” of Arab Israeli citizens have been arrested by Israeli authorities in recent years for allegedly seeking to join terror groups like Daesh.
With Syria lost, Daesh outlives its usefulness to Israel
While the recent decision to revoke the citizenship of alleged Daesh members has largely been framed as the Israeli government cracking down on terrorism, such narratives ignore Israel’s own past support for the terror group over the course of the Syrian conflict.
Indeed, from early on in the conflict, Israel made it clear that it “preferred” Daesh’s presence in Syria to the presence of Syria’s legitimate government, a preference soon followed by a report published by an Israeli government-funded think tank that called Daesh a “useful tool” against Israel’s regional rivals — Iran, Syria, and Hezbollah.
Since then, considerable evidence, including a 2014 United Nations report, has shown that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) have long been in regular contact with Daesh, even bringing wounded Daesh members into Israel for treatment. Particularly jarring was the 2016 statement made by Israel’s military intelligence chief, Major General Herzi Halevy, that Israel does not want to see Daesh in Syria defeated.
Even the very Israeli who declared ISIS an illegal terror organization, former Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, later went on to candidly admit last year that Israel maintains open communications with a Daesh cell active in the Golan Heights, even though communicating with any group deemed terrorist by the state is, without exception, illegal under Israeli law. Not only that, but Ya’alon also went on to describe a specific incident in which Daesh apologized to the IDF after opening fire on an IDF position, suggesting that the Israel-Daesh relationship is deeper than “open communications.”
Given Israel’s proven collaboration with Daesh over the course of the Syrian conflict in order to aid its own regional ambitions, the recent decision to revoke the citizenship of 19 Israeli Daesh members is hardly the straightforward counter-terrorism measure it is being made out to be.
Instead, it is likely an indicator of the quickly approaching end of the Syrian conflict, which has seen the Syrian government largely reconsolidate its territory despite the efforts of largely foreign-funded opposition groups. Indeed, though Daesh was once a “useful tool” to the Israeli government, it’s failure to dislodge the Syrian government means that the group has outlived its usefulness — as have the handful of Israelis who joined the group over the course of the conflict.

Turkish-backed NFL Puts Forces On High Alert And Calls For All-Out Mobilization In Northern Syria
On August 24, the Turkish-backed National Front for Liberation (NFL) announced in an official statement that it has placed its forces in the northern Syrian governorate of Idlib on high alert to repel any possible attack of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and its allies.
Furthermore, the NFL called on the remaining armed groups to follow its steps as well as called for an all-out mobilization in northern Syria. The Turkish-backed group went further revealing that it had prepared several defensive and offensive planes.
“We take the criminal regime’s threats and hints of a near battle in Idlib seriously … We call on all factions and formations in the region to do likewise,” the NFL statement reads.
The NFL was formed on August 1, when several Turkish-backed groups in Idlib and western Aleppo, including the Syrian Liberation Front (SLF), merged their forces. Back then, Syrian opposition activists reported that Turkey had played a key role in the creation of the new force.
The NFL’s statement indicates that the long-awaited military operation in northern Syria is imminent. However, Syrian pro-government activists don’t believe that the SAA will target the areas controlled by the NFL in western Aleppo or Idlib.
