Nasdaq rebounds as chip stocks bounce, Dow dragged lower by Apple: Live updates

The Nasdaq Composite rose on Tuesday as investors moved back into key technology stocks after recent pressure and geared up for U.S. midterm election results.

The tech-heavy index jumped 1.1%, recouping some of its latest losses. The Nasdaq-100 also rose 0.9% but still traded in correction territory, still down about 10% from its recent high. The S&P 500 climbed 0.6%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average traded down 100 points, or 0.2%, weighed down by Apple shares.

Apple fell almost 2% after the iPhone maker issued a disappointing margin forecast late Monday and iPad sales in the fiscal fourth-quarter missed the Street’s estimates.

Conversely, shares of chipmakers saw gains. Advanced Micro Devices — which releases its third-quarter results after the bell — gained 4%, while Broadcom rose more than 3% and Micron Technology, Nvidia and Inteleach gained nearly 3%.

Tuesday’s advance marks a reversal from the pullback seen Monday, which sent the Nasdaq down more than 1% and extended a recent retreat in the Nasdaq Composite and S&P 500 to a third day.

While semiconductor makers — and others tied to artificial intelligence — showed signs of recovery Tuesday, Shawn Snyder of Potomac Fund Management believes the market is not out of the woods.

“The concerns about the cost of capital and the level of debt financing necessary [are] going to persist for quite some time,” the economic strategist told CNBC. But the trade that relies on the artificial intelligence buildout could be getting close to oversold territory, he added, saying that “maybe there’s a little bit more downside, 4% or 5%, but eventually, if there’s not a recession associated with these drawdowns, normally that’s kind of where it stops.”

Oil prices, meanwhile, turned lower on speculation there might be progress in U.S.-Iran negotiations. Brent crude was last down almost 1% at about $104 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate futures was little changed at around $96 per barrel.

Election Day

Investors are also focused on the midterm elections Tuesday, which will decide which party controls the House and Senate starting in January. Prediction market traders see a nearly 75% likelihood of Democrats taking the Senate.

A sweep of the House and Senate by Democrats could weigh on the broader market on Wednesday — and spark a sell-off in artificial intelligence stocks especially — if investors haven’t already positioned for that outcome. If Republicans keep control of the Senate or both chambers, the market may see short-term gains, JPMorgan said this week.

Even with President Donald Trump in the White House, a victory by Democrats in either the House or Senate could shape investigations and oversight in Washington — key for industries including defense, AI and healthcare.

Once the elections are over, it’s possible the market may still move higher regardless of the outcome, according to Snyder at Potomac Fund.

“You’re looking at an AI trade that’s already taken a hit,” he said. “That, combined with the idea that the uncertainty from the midterm fades, probably argues for relief rally no matter what.”

Despite China, the EU Approves the Acquisition of MediaMarktSaturn

The Chinese retail group JD.com wants to acquire Europe's largest electronics retailer, MediaMarktSaturn. Brussels has given the green light. Beijing had previously threatened to take action. Today at 12:001/2

The European Commission has approved the planned acquisition of MediaMarktSaturn, Europe’s largest electronics retailer, by Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, subject to certain conditions. The Commission announced this. According to the announcement, competition regulators aim to ensure that Chinese subsidies do not distort the market.

JD.com and Ceconomy announced in a joint press release that all conditions of the offer had now been met and said the transaction would be completed in the coming days.

The Brussels authority had determined that JD.com had received subsidies from China in the form of preferential financing, tax breaks, and grants. The European Commission saw a risk that the capacity financed by these measures could ultimately be made available to Ceconomy as well, and that the companies could put pressure on competitors through “an aggressive pricing policy.”

Prevent Cross-Subsidization

As a result, the companies are required, among other things, to ensure that all intra-group transactions between JD.com and Ceconomy—particularly financing transactions—are conducted on arm’s-length terms. This is intended to prevent cross-subsidization.

The companies had proposed the commitments in light of the antitrust review and are now bound by them for ten years. China had threatened the EU with retaliatory measures in August in response to the investigation.

JD.com plans to acquire the Düsseldorf-based Ceconomy Group, which owns MediaMarkt and Saturn. The Chinese online retailer's offer values Ceconomy at approximately 2.2 billion euros.

Approval from the Brussels authority is one of the prerequisites for the change in ownership. State aid is subject to strict rules in the EU to prevent distortions of competition. The authority also reviews certain subsidies provided by countries outside the EU.

Allegations from Beijing

In August, the Chinese Ministry of Justice stated that if the EU persisted with its course of action, it would respond decisively. At the same time, Beijing prohibited organizations and individuals from assisting the EU with certain requests for information in China. The Ministry of Justice accused Brussels of demanding extensive and unnecessary information from China.

A spokesperson for the European Commission countered at the time by emphasizing the importance of a level playing field. While in the past only subsidies from European countries had been scrutinized, foreign subsidies are now also being examined.

"The goal is for all companies operating in the EU, including Chinese companies, to be treated equally and to compete on equal terms," the spokesperson said.

EU Competition Commissioner Teresa Ribera welcomed the “constructive approach taken by the companies involved.” “Consumers benefit from a competitive retail and e-commerce sector in which all companies operate on a level playing field.”

Germany imposes conditions

JD.com had made a takeover bid in the summer of 2025 and secured a majority stake in Ceconomy a few months later. Regulatory authorities in several countries, including Germany, also reviewed the acquisition and ultimately gave it the green light.

In many cases, approval was granted subject to certain conditions. In Germany, for example, these conditions are intended to ensure that customers’ personal data remains protected. They also grant the federal government broad monitoring and oversight powers and allow it to revoke the approval in the event of violations.

Ukrainian Drones Hit Yaroslavl Oil Refinery, Trigger Power Outages in Crimea

November 3, 2026

Overnight Ukrainian drone strikes damaged one of Russia’s largest oil refineries in the city of Yaroslavl, regional authorities said Tuesday.

Yaroslavl region Governor Mikhail Yevrayev confirmed that the local oil refinery was struck amid a “large-scale” attack, adding that two workers at the facility were injured. He did not provide details about the extent of the damage.

The Slavneft-Yanos refinery, which is jointly owned by Rosneft and Gazprom, has a crude processing capacity of 300,000 barrels per day, or 15 million metric tons per year. Ukraine claims the refinery supplies fuel and lubricants for the Russian military.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted 856 Ukrainian drones across Russia and annexed Crimea between Monday night and Tuesday morning. More than half of those drones targeted Moscow and the surrounding regions, officials said.

In annexed Crimea, Kremlin-installed authorities said Ukrainian attacks on the regional power grid forced at least five cities on the Black Sea peninsula to introduce emergency power cuts.

Meanwhile, Russia continued its attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, with Ukraine’s Energy Ministry reporting damage at facilities in 10 regions. Emergency outages were reported in Kyiv and six surrounding regions.

The Russian military confirmed it targeted four power plants overnight, as well as two substations and port infrastructure along the Danube River.

Ukraine’s largest private energy company, DTEK, said three thermal plants were forced to shut down following the Russian attacks.

Today is election day in America. Depending on who you talk to, follow or review, opinions & predictions are all over the place.What really matters is what YOU DO and ultimately the scale of voter turnout.

After years of watching UniParty politics,back in 2015 I said it really didn’t matter to me what Donald Trump did in the first primary debate, he had my support. The reason was simple; all other candidates represented the status quo in one form or another. Two wings of the same bird that had been delivering the same economic policy outcomes that created the rustbelt, destroyed the American middle-class and usurped our constitutional intents for partisan purposes.

Professional Democrats organize to gain power; professional Republicans organize to gain money. The business model within Washington DC works both wings of the UniParty vulture this way.That’s why I said 11 years ago, it doesn’t matter to me if Donald Trump shows up to that first debate in five-inch stiletto heels and a Carmen Miranda hat to start twerking at the podium of Jeb Bush…. The only non-UniParty member has my full support.

The Tea Party assembly already knew the duplicity of the GOP, the entrenched dangers behind the ruse of the Obama coalition and the conniving manipulations inside the unelected federal administrative state. We had already been targeted by the DOJ and IRS long before the term “weaponization of government” became a catch phrase.

In 2012, we watched what is now labeled as the Democrat Socialists of America, assemble in Charlotte North Carolina at the DNC convention and THRICE they denied God!

When Obama/Biden weaponized the system to target the threat Donald Trump represented, which is to say his targeting was genuinely to take all the fire they could not easily deploy against our larger mass, we watched what we knew. Yes, “we been knew” and not much of it came as a surprise.

Fast forward a decade later and where are we? Still right here, fighting, scrapping and highlighting the same conniving, corrupt and manipulative interests who tried to tear us down in the decade before Trump’s arrival. They haven’t quit and neither will we.The difference now is THE GREAT AWAKENING.

Will enough people who are abhorred by the Democrat Socialists of America and the various Communist regional advocates vote to keep them out of elected office. Or will the DSA and Communists succeed in gaining power by any means necessary.

Today we will discover the answer to that question.

So many bombshell events have happened since October 7, that many believe they will be insulated from shock at the unexpected event around the corner.

And yet, top officials from Israel's defense establishment, the Foreign Ministry, and the Finance Ministry all fell out of their seats on Tuesday when US President Donald Trump suddenly announced the unexpected end of decades of US military aid to Israel on live TV.

Israelis over the last year have gotten used to the idea that military aid would end at the end of 2028, which is the end of a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2018 under the Obama administration.

Some Israelis thought even that was a bad move to just accept without a fight, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had argued that Israel needed:

1) greater weapons independence and that 2) evolving politics in the US meant that an end to aid would likely happen whether Israel wanted it or not.

But there is around $8 billion that Israel's defense establishment was planning to use for a variety of items in the coming two years, from F-35 aircraft, to new F-15 aircraft, to helicopters, to defense interceptors, to a range of other weapons systems and joint weapons research projects.

Defense, Finance Ministries completed plans for NIS 15 billion

Only weeks ago, Israel's Defense and Finance Ministries ironed out a deal to disperse around NIS 15 billion, which the Knesset had already approved, but was holding onto out of concern that Israel is spending too much on defense.

In fairness, Israel's defense budget has jumped from the NIS 60 billion range to 80 to 100 to around NIS 143 billion in recent years due to the ongoing wars and escalating new threats on seven fronts.

Threat overhead: UNESCO reveals death toll for journalists killed by drones

For journalists covering war, danger comes from above. UNESCO has confirmed that unmanned aerial vehicles killed two in five reporters across six war zones, according to its latest report.

UNESCO released the findings on 2 November in its 2026 Director-General’s Report on the Safety of Journalists and the Danger of Impunity. The agency recorded 189 killings worldwide over 2024 and 2025, up 20% from the previous two-year reporting period.

127 of them died in conflict zones, and 15 journalists were killed while wearing press vests or travelling in vehicles clearly marked PRESS.

«Journalists are increasingly paying with their lives for reporting from the frontlines of war,» UNESCO Director-General Khaled El-Enany said, as cited by UN News.

Recent warzone casualties among journalists

In June 2025, an Israeli drone struck the courtyard of Al-Ahli Baptist Hospital in Gaza, killing Palestine Today TV editor Suleiman Hajjaj and camera operator Ismail Baddah, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

Al-Araby TV’s cameraman Ahmad Qalaja died of his injuries the following day. In October, a Russian drone reportedly hit a vehicle carrying reporter Olena Hramova and camera operator Yevhen Karmazin, who worked for Ukraine’s state-funded broadcaster Freedom.

Earlier that year, on 4 January, another drone struck a civilian vehicle carrying Alexander Martemyanov, a freelance correspondent for Russia’s Izvestia newspaper, on the Donetsk–Horlivka highway in Russian-controlled eastern Ukraine.

Martemyanov succumbed to his injuries, and four other media workers were reportedly injured.

Some administration officials suggested Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is trying to draw President Trump back into military action.

Israel has shared intelligence with the United States asserting that Iran is considering the use of chemical weapons against its adversaries, information met with alarm by some American officials and deep skepticism by others, according to U.S. and regional officials.

Some American officials see the Israeli intelligence as part of a pressure campaign by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to persuade the Trump administration to return to major combat operations against Iran.

BREAKING: In a 6-5 vote, the Ninth Circuit reinstated its earlier ruling lifting restrictions on the Trump administration's efforts to have states set aside suspected noncitizen ballots, allowing it to resume such requests and warn election officials of prosecution.

The ruling marks the court's third order in roughly 12 hours. A three-judge panel initially stayed a district court's restrictions on the administration. The en banc court then vacated that decision and ordered rehearing. An 11-judge panel has now reinstated the stay.

The reinstated stay allows the administration to continue asking state election officials to set aside ballots from suspected noncitizens and warning that knowingly counting unlawful ballots could result in federal prosecution. States are not required to comply with the requests.

Russia will not be drawn into an arms race with Europe and is instead pushing for a new security agreement, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said.

Speaking at the Fourth Minsk International Conference on Eurasian Security on Tuesday, Lavrov warned against further confrontation and urged European nations to reconsider their approach to relations with Moscow.

He called on countries to “honestly and realistically assess the situation and work together to overcome the accumulated mistakes and misunderstandings, paving the way for a genuinely fair system of mutual security guarantees.”

European leaders have openly discussed an arms race with Russia. In 2025, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk urged the EU to arm itself “faster and more wisely than Russia” and expand its defense industry. Moscow responded that it would “not play this game.”

Lavrov also accused the EU of becoming an “aggressive militarist bloc” targeting Russia and Belarus. He claimed Brussels was seeking to exclude both countries from Europe’s security architecture and turn the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) into an instrument of EU and NATO policy.

Moscow has long demanded guarantees against NATO expansion and military deployments near its borders. European leaders, meanwhile, have warned that Russia could attack NATO countries – claims Moscow has repeatedly dismissed as “nonsense.”

Lavrov's remarks come ahead of a new round of Russia-Ukraine peace talks in Abu Dhabi next week, to be mediated by Washington, according to US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. European representatives have not been invited, although US officials are expected to discuss security guarantees for Kiev separately with NATO allies in Brussels this week.

Britain and France, meanwhile, are preparing for a possible troop deployment to Ukraine. London announced on Tuesday that 2,800 troops from 11 countries would participate in an exercise in Poland to prepare for a post-conflict mission aimed at rebuilding Kiev's armed forces. Moscow has warned that Western troops deployed to Ukraine would be considered legitimate military targets.

Last month, President Vladimir Putin accused European leaders of undermining peace efforts by portraying Russia as a military threat and preparing for direct confrontation. He described such rhetoric as “political schizophrenia,” expressing hope that European governments would eventually recognize the benefits of peaceful relations with Moscow.

Putin also held talks last week with Finnish President Alexander Stubb and Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, voicing support for dialogue with Western countries despite their military assistance to Ukraine and sanctions against Russia.

Counter-Drone Laser Weapon Now Guarding Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Alongside SAMs

Mar-a-Lago is the latest real-world deployment for the U.S. military's growing arsenal of LOCUST counter-drone lasers.

At least one AeroVironment LOCUST laser counter-drone system is part of the array of anti-air defenses that have popped up around President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, in recent weeks.

Versions of LOCUST have been seeing steadily increasing use within the U.S. military in recent years, including deployments now along the border with Mexico.

Though there has been much progress in the development of practical laser directed-energy weapons in recent years, the technology has continued to face hurdles to more widespread adoption.

The LOCUST system at Mar-a-Lago, which is mounted on a 4×4 Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), is seen in two pictures that Getty’s Andrew Harnik took on October 31.

When exactly the laser-directed energy weapon was deployed is unclear. Laser Wars was the first to spot the system in one of Harnik’s pictures and confirm its deployment.

Harnik’s main focus was a pair of Humvee-based AN/TWQ-1 Avenger short-range air defense systems on a floating platform in Lake Worth Lagoon near the edge of the estate, which were first deployed there just over two weeks ago.

Additional Avengers have also been positioned around Donald J. Trump International Airport, which is situated some three miles to the west. The U.S. military has also set up elements of Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System Fly-Away Kits, including Ku-band radar, electronic support measures (ESM), jammers, and 360-degree infrared search and track systems nearby. TWZ covered the presence of the Avengers and the Fly-Away Kits in a report last Friday.

This heightened security comes amid signs that a new round of major hostilities with Iran could be on the horizon, as well as the run-up to tomorrow’s mid-term elections.

The regime in Tehran has threatened Trump’s life on several occasions over the years. The President has already been the subject of several domestic assassination attempts and threats.

“At the request of the U.S. Secret Service (USSS) and under NORAD [the U.S.-Canadian North American Aerospace Defense Command] and USNORTHCOM [U.S. Northern Command] authorities, NORAD and USNORTHCOM recently deployed ground-based air defense [GBAD] assets and Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System capabilities in and around Mar-a-Lago, Florida,” the commands told us in a statement last week. “These assets add a complementary layer of technology to enhance protection.

Due to operational security, we are unable to provide additional details. For further detail, we refer you to the USSS.”

“The U.S. Secret Service is operating in a heightened threat environment, and we continuously adapt our protective operations to incorporate cutting-edge tools, technology, and methods to safeguard our protectees,” the Secret Service also told us in a prior statement.

“At the request of the U.S. Secret Service, NORAD and U.S. Northern Command are providing Counter-Unmanned Aircraft System capabilities in support of our protective operations.”

The U.S. Army began receiving the JLTV-based versions of LOCUST, along with examples mounted on the smaller 4×4 Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) last year through a program called the Army Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL).

This followed the delivery of palletized LOCUST systems under a rapid prototyping effort called the Palletized-High Energy Laser (P-HEL) in the early 2020s. The Army is now acquiring LOCUST X3 systems under its Enduring-High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program.

LOCUST has become something of a star more broadly within the directed energy space across the U.S. military. The U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Navy have also been exploring the use of versions of LOCUST in ground-based and shipboard contexts.

To date, all versions of LOCUST consist of a turret with the laser beam projector, as well as built-in electro-optical and infrared video cameras for target acquisition and tracking.

The complete system also includes power generation and cooling components. LOCUST variants can also be cued using offboard sensors, including small-form-factor high-frequency radars and passive radio frequency signal detection systems on host vehicles or located off-platform nearby, like what the Fly-Away Kit provides.
