BBC pays white staff less than ethnic minorities – report

Black, Asian, and mixed-race employees earn up to 13.2% more than white colleagues, the broadcaster’s own figures show

White employees at the BBC earnless than their ethnic minority colleagues in six of seven salary grades, according to the British broadcaster’s 2025/26 annual report. The figures have raised new questions about the corporation’s drive to promote ethnic minority staff and its possible impact on pay.

According to the BBC’s 2025/26 pay gap report, highlighted by The Telegraph on Wednesday,black, Asian, mixed-race and other ethnic minority employees earn 13.2% more in median hourly pay than white colleagues in the lowest salary band. Even among the broadcaster’s most senior executives, the gap stands at 5.3%.

White employees came out ahead in just one category, where their median hourly pay was 0.6% higher. Across the BBC as a whole, however,white staff still earned 0.7% more, largely because they held a greater share of the highest-paid jobs.

The pay figures have drawn attention to the BBC’s push to advance ethnic minority employees. The broadcaster runs special mentoring and career development programs designed to help Black, Asian and other minority staff climb the career ladder, raising questions about whether the drive could be contributing to the pay gaps.

The corporation has set a target for ethnic minorities to make up 20% of both its workforce and senior leadership. The BBC insists these are goals rather than quotas and says they have no bearing on pay decisions.

Former UK Culture Secretary John Whittingdale questioned the BBC’s pay practices, telling The Telegraph that thebroadcaster “ought to be paying staff entirely on the basis of the value and merit they contribute for the job they are doing.”

He said theBBC had previously moved to correct gender pay disparities and should apply the same principle of “fair pay” regardless of race, sexuality, or gender.

The broadcaster has faced repeated scandals over unequal pay. In 2020, journalist Samira Ahmed won a landmark employment tribunal case after judges found that she had been paid less than male presenter Jeremy Vine for equivalent work.

In 2024, four female BBC presenters accused the corporation of sex and age discrimination following a shake-up of its news division. In November 2025, the BBC disclosed six internal equal pay cases, including two appeals.

The BBC has rejected suggestions that the latest figures demonstrate unequal treatment, saying it is “committed to fair and equal pay for all.”

Husband appears in court accused of GP's murder

The husband of a GP has appeared in court charged with her murder after she was found dead at home.

The body of 45-year-old Hannah Cain, known to her patients as Dr Hannah Terry, was found at a property in Fern Hill in Dersingham, Norfolk, on Sunday.

Mark Cain, 45, also of Fern Hill, was charged with her murder on Tuesday.

He appeared in a black sweatshirt at Norwich Magistrates' Court, where he spoke only to confirm his age, name and address. He was not asked to enter a plea and is due back in court on Thursday.

Prosecutor Jacqui Hanlon told the court the ambulance service contacted the police at 02:25 BST on Sunday.

She said Hannah Cain was "found in an upstairs bedroom not breathing, not conscious".

She said a post-mortem examination "noted blunt force injury to the right side of her head had been inflicted, also an injury that could be suggestive of compression of the neck".

District judge Matthew Bone remanded the defendant in custody to appear at King's Lynn Crown Court on Thursday.

In a statement issued on Wednesday afternoon, Hannah Cain's family described her as "kind, generous and loving".

"We are incredibly proud of the woman she was and of the great care she took of all her patients who knew her as Dr Terry," they added.

The GP was listed as a member of the practice team at Grimston Medical Centre, which had closed on Monday and Tuesday, following her death.

Dersingham is on the edge of the Royal Family's estate of Sandringham in west Norfolk, while Grimston is to the south.

The GP served in a pool of doctors who were regularly on call for members of the Royal Family, The Sun newspaper has reported.

The medical centre reopened on Wednesday and said it would not be commenting "on the circumstances surrounding the tragic death of our colleague, Dr Hannah Terry".

A statement issued by the NHS on behalf of the practice said: "We are deeply saddened by the tragic death of our much-loved and highly respected colleague, Dr Hannah Terry.

"Hannah was an exceptional doctor and a deeply valued member of our NHS and primary care community.

"Highly intelligent, kind and generous, she brought warmth and positivity to those around her."

Public health officials, including the honorable HHS Secretary RFK Jr. and celebrated physician Dr. Mehmet Oz, will gather at the White House today for a closed-door “risk assessment” meeting about an alleged pneumonic plague death in Russia. President Trump will not be present; he’s currently on the campaign trail supporting Republican candidates.

According to the story, a 28-year-old lab worker at a Siberian plague institute accidentally shattered a test tube holding live virus. Soon after, she developed pneumonia, was placed on a ventilator, and died two days afterward. Russian authorities have dismissed the plague story as fake news propaganda and said that the victim, Darya Shipilova, died from pneumonia of “unknown origin,” possibly acquired during a recent trip to Mongolia. Nonetheless, Russia’s dramatic response to even a single lab-acquired infection rang alarm bells and spawned conspiracy theories. Five medical facilities within 150 kilometers of the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute were allegedly placed on lockdown, and Russia quarantined 187 citizens who had close contact with Ms. Shipilova.

Her death and Russia’s seemingly histrionic response raised valid questions: Why wasn’t Ms. Shipilova wearing PPE while handling a virulent, highly transmissible virus in a BSL-4 laboratory? Why wasn’t she given antibiotics, which are very effective against pneumonic plague? Why the secrecy? Concealment and non-disclosure fuel conspiracies, and sprawling tales of the plague institute being a secret bioweapon laboratory surfaced on social media.

The Kremlin has denied that assertion, calling it fantastical garbage. Our FSB source, Andrei Zhakarov, said the agency ascribes the bioweapon lab story to Ukrainian agents either seeding or amplifying fictitious nonsense on social media.

“Ukraine make lies,” Zhakarov said. “No lab leak. If a test tube broke, safety failsafe would contain it. Postmortem of Darya Shipilova found no plague in her. No plague in quarantined people—many already released. Ukrainian, how you say, shit-starters at Ministry of Defense make this shit up to make us look incompetent and scare people. Stir up fear of another fake pandemic coming. Deep State is global, you know.”

Additionally, yarns about a second plague victim and five hospitals implementing quarantine lockdown were also sown by Deep State agitators, one of whom, Zhakarov said, the Kremlin has already identified and will “deal with” in short order. Zhakarov insinuated that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense had either planted a mole at the plague research institute or bribed a legitimate employee to “leak lies.”

“If the FSB finds spy or traitor—fast justice. No trial. Many people fall out of high windows in Russia. It’s waste of money to bring guilty people to trial,” Zhakarov said.
