The Marines Have A Big Machine Gun Problem
The U.S. Marine Corps may be reconsidering the role of belt-fed machine guns inside the infantry squad. Marines from 7th Marine Regiment recently trained with the Knight’s Armament Light Assault Machine Gun, or LAMG, alongside soldiers from the 75th Ranger Regiment. The event follows years of debate over the Marine Corps’ decision to replace the M249 SAW in the automatic rifle role with the M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle. Marine professional writing has also increasingly discussed whether lightweight belt-fed weapons could restore sustained suppression at the squad level.
This video looks at why the Marines moved away from the M249, how the M27 fit the requirements of the Global War on Terror, and why preparation for conventional warfare could change that calculation. It also covers the KAC LAMG, fire superiority, suppression, Marine infantry squad organization, Force Design, and the challenges of using magazine-fed automatic rifles against enemy forces equipped with their own machine guns. There is currently no announced Marine Corps program to replace the M27 or adopt the LAMG, but recent training and public comments suggest the Corps is actively examining the capability.
