October Night Sky 2026: 7 Rare Celestial Events To See This Month

Several events can be viewed without special equipment, while binoculars or telescopes can reveal planets, star clusters and other details.
October 2026 is bringing a packed lineup of skywatching events, with Saturn reaching its brightest point of the year on Oct. 4, the Moon meeting Mars the following morning, two major meteor showers, a chance to see the Milky Way's bright center, Mercury's best evening appearance, and a rare Moon-Pleiades encounter later in the month. The best part is that several of these events can be seen without expensive equipment.
Some planets and the Moon are visible with the naked eye, while binoculars or a small telescope can reveal more detail. Dark locations away from city lights will provide the clearest views of the fainter objects and meteors.
Saturn reaches its brightest point on Oct. 4
Saturn will be the month's biggest planetary attraction when it reaches opposition on Oct. 4. At opposition, Earth sits directly between Saturn and the Sun, making the planet appear especially bright and allowing it to remain visible throughout the night.
According to Astronomy, Saturn will be about 780 million miles from Earth at opposition and will shine at magnitude 0.3. It will rise around 7 p.m. local time in early October and reach its highest point around midnight.
The planet can be spotted without a telescope, but a telescope will reveal its rings. Saturn's largest moon, Titan, will also be an easy target for telescope users during several nights in October.
Moon and Mars meet before sunrise on Oct. 5
Early risers should look toward the eastern sky on Oct. 5 for a crescent Moon near reddish Mars.
The Moon will also pass across the northern edge of the Beehive Cluster, a group of roughly 1,000 stars. Mars will sit about 3.4 degrees west of the cluster.
The sight becomes even more interesting on Oct. 11, when Mars will appear near the center of the Beehive Cluster. Astronomy says the movement of Mars against the background stars can become noticeable within about 10 minutes.

Draconid meteors peak on Oct. 8-9
The Draconid meteor shower reaches its peak overnight from Oct. 8 to 9.
This year's timing is favorable because the Moon will be only a thin crescent, reducing the amount of moonlight washing out faint meteors.
The shower is not known for producing huge numbers of meteors, but it can still provide a good show shortly after nightfall. Travel + Leisure estimates around 10 meteors per hour under dark-sky conditions.
For the best chance of seeing them, move away from bright city lights and give your eyes time to adjust to the darkness.
The Milky Way gets a final autumn spotlight
Oct. 10 brings a new Moon, creating some of the darkest skies of the month. That makes it an excellent time to look for the Milky Way's bright galactic core.
The core is visible in the evening during autumn but becomes increasingly difficult to see as winter approaches.
National Geographic notes that October offers one of the last good opportunities to see it from the United States before the region becomes hidden behind the Sun from roughly November through February.
A dark location with a wide, unobstructed view will offer the best chance.
Mercury makes a brief October appearance
Mercury is notoriously difficult to spot because it stays close to the Sun in Earth's sky. However, the planet gets a short viewing opportunity during the first half of October.
According to Astronomy, Mercury is best seen from the Southern Hemisphere, although people in the Northern Hemisphere with a clear western horizon may also catch it shortly after sunset. On Oct. 12, Mercury will appear near a thin crescent Moon.
Because Mercury sets quickly, observers will need a clear western horizon and should look soon after sunset.
Orionids peak on Oct. 21-22
The Orionid meteor shower will peak overnight from Oct. 21 to 22. The shower is created by debris left behind by Halley's Comet and can produce up to about 20 meteors per hour under ideal conditions.
This year's Moon will interfere with some of the display, but there is still a useful viewing window after the Moon sets. Astronomy says the best time to watch will be during the early morning hours, particularly after about 1 a.m.
The Moon passes across the Pleiades on Oct. 27
October ends with another unusual Moon event. On Oct. 27, the Moon will pass in front of several stars in the Pleiades, also known as the Seven Sisters.
The event is called a lunar occultation. The Pleiades are a young star cluster about 444 light-years away, and the Moon's movement can temporarily hide some of its stars.
The event will be visible across much of North America, although the exact view will depend on location.
For October skywatchers, the month offers something almost every week, from a bright Saturn visible all night to meteors, planets and a disappearing star cluster.
A clear sky, a dark location and a little patience may be enough to see several of these events.

Senate Adjourns Without Election Integrity Vote
Countdown: 33 Days To Midterms
Oct. 1 (UPI) — The U.S. Senate adjourned Wednesday until after the November elections, allowing those facing re-election to go home and campaign.
Senators, however, left a lot of unfinished work that they will have to scramble to finish in November and December. They are scheduled to return Nov. 9 and will only be in session for eight days in November and 14 days in December, and that’s counting Fridays, which aren’t typically Senate work days, The Hill reported.
Just before they adjourned, they voted to approve Keith Sonderling, President Donald Trump’s nominee for secretary of labor.
Republicans used their last day in session forcing Democrats to vote on two bills to ask states to consider new ways to protect taxpayers from the expense of upgrading water infrastructure for data centers and to ban members of Congress from buying publicly traded stocks. Democrats blocked both bills mostly along party lines. They called the effort “toothless” show votes.
Majority Leader John Thune said the Republicans were successful in the effort.
“Given the overwhelming support for this measure in the House,” Thune said of the data center bill, “it’s difficult to conclude that Senate Democrats blocked this bill for any reason other than the desire to deny Republicans another win in an election year, which is a pretty poor reason.”
Republicans in the Senate are worried about the elections.
“No matter how much you love us as Republicans, we’re in control,” Sen. Jim Justice, R-W.Va., said. “If you can’t pay the bills, you’ve got a real problem with us.”
The most impactful legislation the Senate has passed in the last few weeks was an overhaul of college sports.
“I can assure you that moms and dads out there across America, when they lie down to sleep at night, they’re not worried about the football coaches,” Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said last week.
Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said senators in tight races wanted to get home as soon as possible, The Hill reported.
“I think we’ll have a net loss. I think it’s unlikely we’d have the same numbers. The margins will be thinner,” he said.
Tillis added that keeping vulnerable senators in Washington hurts them.
“Every time you’re here, it’s a fundraiser you can’t host or it’s a town hall you can’t speak at. We need to get them back in the state. Invariably, the people who want to stick here, they all have one thing in common: They’re not up [for reelection] this cycle,”he said.

Jobless Claims Fall to 197,000 in Best Year Since 1969
Fewer Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week, continuing the best year for job security in nearly sixty years.
The Labor Department said Thursday that new applications for unemployment benefits dipped to 197,000, down from 198,000 in the prior week. (The prior week’s claim was revised up by 1,000.)
The four-week moving average of claims fell to 200,000, an extraordinary low level by historical standards, down from 202,500 in the prior week.
So far this year, jobless claims have averaged just under 210,000. This is the lowest average for the January through September period since 1969. From 1970 until this year, there was never a January through September period in which claims were this low.
The government reports continuing claims as well as initial claims. For the week ended September 19, these fell by 11,000 to 1,701,000, the lowest in three years. The previous week’s level was revised down by 7,000 to 1,712,000. The 4-week moving average was 1,723,750, a decrease of 18,500 from the previous week’s revised average.
