=Throughout the summer, a major scandal has been brewing in Lithuania. In late July, the country suffered a landmark defeat in the European Court of Human Rights in a case brought by Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri, a Saudi national held in secret detention and brutally tortured for four years in CIA black sites around the world – including Lithuania. While Western governments and news outlets have ignored the judgement, the ECHR’s conclusions produced bitter political division locally, with the opposition calling for a new investigation into the CIA’s use and abuse of the country during the US-led ‘War on Terror’.
Lithuania’s ruling coalition, in keeping with previous governments, is resistant to any further damaging light being shed on their territory hosting criminal operations of American intelligence for many years in total secret, with perpetrators of horrendous torture insulated from any legal repercussions or professional consequence. Their resistance is understandable. On top of not wanting to offend their colossal US ally, Lithuania’s ruling elites are keen to conceal from the local population, and the world, how their ‘independence’ under Western hegemony comes with unseen strings attached. When those strings entail intimate collusion in grave crimes, it’s Lithuania that suffers the consequences.
How did the ECHR rule against Lithuania?
Abd al-Rahim al-Nashiri is accused of being the mastermind of the October 2000 USS Cole bombing, and heading Al Qaeda in the Persian Gulf. He was captured by the CIA in November 2002. Over the next four years, he was held in nine separate CIA black sites, and brutally tortured every step of the way. Five months of his ordeal were spent at a specially constructed facility in Lithuania, named ‘Detention Site Violet’ in internal CIA memos, from November 2005 to March 2006. Lithuania denied any responsibility for al-Nashiri’s maltreatment, and contested the evidentiary basis of his claims. The ECHR found Vilnius’ culpability was “proven beyond reasonable doubt.”
During his incarceration in Lithuania, al-Nashiri was held incommunicado in solitary confinement and denied any contact with the outside world. His removal from the country was conducted with the Lithuanian government’s full knowledge he could face “a flagrant denial of justice and the death penalty” if extradited to the US, where he has remained in Guantanamo Bay until today. The ECHR unanimously found Vilnius violated numerous Articles of the European Convention on Human Rights through the country’s complicity with the CIA’s treatment of al-Nashiri, including right to a fair trial, right to respect for private and family life, right to life, and inhuman or degrading treatment.
Is this Lithuania’s first run in with the ECHR over CIA torture?
The ruling on al-Nashiri’s treatment is the third ECHR judgement against Lithuania over its involvement in the CIA torture program. In May 2018, the court ruled state authorities conspired with the CIA and subjected high-profile prisoner Abu Zubaydah to inhuman treatment, sensory isolation, and violation of his fundamental rights to liberty and security. Vilnius was ordered to pay him €100,000 in damages, which he has been unable to collect due to his ongoing detention in Guantanamo Bay. It was just the beginning of Lithuania’s major legal woes over its part in the CIA’s torture program.
In January 2024, the ECHR ruled Lithuania was responsible for arbitrarily detaining Saudi national Mustafa al-Hawsawi. Like Zubaydah, he was held in Detention Site Violet, exposing him to arbitrary detention and ill-treatment, and failing to conduct an effective local criminal probe into his incarceration and torture. Lithuania was ordered to pay €100,000 to al-Hawsawi in damages and €30,000 in costs. It’s not just the ECHR which has sought to hold Lithuania accountable, either. In 2022, the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention found Vilnius was complicit in torture and secret detention of alleged terrorists on the CIA’s behalf.

All along, the ECHR has condemned the Lithuanian authorities for the country’s involvement in the CIA’s torture program, which saw many ‘high value’ detainees – including accused 9/11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed – pass through Detention Site Violet’s secret doors. The court has also harshly criticized Vilnius for its stubborn refusal to conduct serious criminal and/or public investigations into the secret CIA prison network constructed on Lithuania’s soil, and the involvement in and knowledge of these operations on the part of the country’s security, intelligence, and policing apparatus. But it’s abundantly clear the microscopic Baltic state was heavily complicit.
What are the Lithuanians hiding?
Despite the conspiracy of silence in Vilnius, numerous local investigations in the US and at the EU level have created damning trails of breadcrumbs leading straight from Detention Site Violet to the highest levels of the Lithuanian state. It is confirmed the CIA obtained approval from the country’s political leaders before constructing the black sites. One Lithuanian official was reportedly “shocked” by the proposals, but agreed anyway – it was an offer they couldn’t refuse. The CIA offered $1 million to its Lithuanian ‘partner’ agencies to “show appreciation” for their support, with the cash funneled through “complex mechanisms” to conceal the payments.
The Lithuanian parliament’s own Committee on National Security and Defence (CNSD) found the country’s State Security Department (SSD) accounting of funds it received for the operation was “inappropriate.” The construction of two separate CIA black sites was also concluded to have been “blessed by the top officials of the State.” The first was abandoned due to its small size limiting how many detainees could be held there at one time. This led to Detention Site Violet being built, with Lithuanian officials including then-President Rolandas Paksas kept in the loop regularly on its progress by the CIA. High-ranking SSD directors were also well-aware.
Meanwhile, SSD staff were highly active participants in the torture program on-the-ground from 2002 onwards, structuring and equipping the covert facilities according to CIA specifications and requirements.
Lithuania’s domestic spying agency enjoyed “unrestricted access to all the premises” of the two prisons, although the CIA was largely allowed to act without supervision there. Detention Site Violet was constructed in a former horse riding school located just 15 miles from Vilnius, the property having been bought by a CIA front company based in Panama, called Elite LLC. Coincidentally,this purchase was completed in March 2004, right when Lithuania became a NATO member. ABC News reported:
“On a series of thick concrete pads, [the CIA] installed what a source called ‘prefabricated pods’ to house prisoners, each separated from the other by five or six feet. Each pod included a shower, a bed and a toilet. Separate cells were constructed for interrogations… The prison pods inside the barn were not visible to locals. They describe seeing large amounts of earth being excavated during the summer of 2004. Locals who saw the activity at the prison and approached to ask for work were turned away by English-speaking guards. The guards were replaced by new guards every 90 days.”

However, it has been confirmed Mustafa al-Hawsawi was denied medical treatmentafter suffering severe health issues from repeated rectal rehydration – a form of sexual abuse – while in CIA detention. An Inspector General report found Detention Site Violet – in keeping with other black sites – did not have resources for treating serious mental or physical conditions inflicted by the torture, despite both being common.

Lithuania’s stonewalling of serious investigations into the country’s involvement in the CIA torture program means we do not know for sure the torture techniques to which detainees were subjected there. However, in light of the ECHR’s ruling on al-Nashiri, it may be relevant to consider how he was treated at a CIA black site in Poland.
This included being forced into excruciating standing stress positions for days– which resulted in a medical officer intervention, over fears his shoulders could dislocate – mock executions with a handgun, and the use of a cordless power drill. A January 2003 CIA cable noted concerns over this abuse at agency headquarters:
“We have serious reservations with the continued used of enhanced techniques with Nashiri and its long term impact on him. Subject has been held for three months in very difficult conditions, both physically and mentally… Continued enhanced methods may push subject over the edge psychologically.”
The very same day, the CIA’s chief of interrogations announced his early retirement. “I will no longer be associated in any way with the interrogation program due to serious reservation I have about the current state of affairs,” he wrote. “Instead, I will be retiring shortly. This is a train wreak [sic] waiting to happen and I intend to get the hell off the train before it happens.”

Is Lithuania the only NATO country implicated in CIA torture?
Today, much remains concealed and uncertain about the CIA’s torture program. But it is clear Lithuania was far from alone in assisting the CIA commit horrendous crimes against humanity on its territory, without political or public oversight. In 2007, the Council of Europe published a detailed report on “secret detentions and illegal transfers of detainees” involving EU member states. Poland and Romania were also found to have eagerly abetted the CIA’s demonic activities, despite government denials of knowledge and/or culpability. The CoE found “the key arrangements for CIA clandestine operations in Europe were secured on a bilateral level.”
In Lithuania, Poland, and Romania, formal agreements with local governments and the CIA covered all manner of cooperation, including building the prisons, material support, and operational security, along with cast-iron promises of “non-interference” in the CIA’s criminality. This extended collusion to airport staff, which helped falsify flight records to conceal the arrival and departure of CIA detainees, and prevented customs and border officials from inspecting planes carrying prisoners. However, EU and NATO countries assisted the CIA’s torture program in more low-key ways throughout its operation. One notorious example is the rendition of Khaled El-Masri from North Macedonia.
Two-and-a-half decades on, the events of 9/11 and all that followed still casts a long shadow on every corner of the world, and justice continues to be denied to an unknown number of people – many of them completely innocent – who fell victim to the CIA’s global torture conspiracy.
The ECHR’s latest ruling against Lithuania should, one might think, trigger a long-overdue public inquiry into how officials in Vilnius knowingly colluded in an operation that was completely illegal and unethical, along with appropriate punishments for the figures involved.As 9/11’s silver anniversary has just been marked, it’s never been more vital that the truth be finally told.

A federal judge said Tuesday that District Attorney Larry Krasner may have broken the law while overseeing a contentious post-conviction case, and he said he referred the matter to the U.S. Attorney’s Office to investigate whether Krasner should be charged with crimes including conspiracy or obstruction of justice.
U.S. District Judge Paul S. Diamond made those stunning statements in a memorandum in which he also ruled that Krasner and one of his top supervisors, Matthew Stiegler, could not longer participate in the case — a matter in which a man is seeking to have his murder conviction overturned.
Diamond wrote that over the past several months, as he conducted hearings to learn more about how attorneys in DA’s office handled that case, testimony from some of Krasner’s staffers revealed actions by Krasner and Stiegler that Diamond called “troubling,” “disturbing” — and potentially illegal.
Those actions, he wrote, included pressuring other staffers to take steps to protect Stiegler and blame one of his subordinates; urging staffers to lie to Diamond in court; and threatening “consequences” for those who did not follow Krasner’s orders.

The US military has released what it said was video of commandos intercepting and blowing up a vessel involved in the drug trade in the Eastern Pacific.
The video, published by US Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) on Tuesday,shows a vessel that the military described as a floating refueling station operated in support of the “narco-terrorist” Los Choneros syndicate.
Commandos approached the vessel in a speedboat, boarded it and removed the crew. US forces sank the vessel after disembarking. The crew members were transferred to Ecuadorian authorities, SOUTHCOM said.
“We are exerting unrelenting pressure on these narco-terrorists and hurting them where it counts,” SOUTHCOM Commander General Francis Donovan said.
After returning to office in 2025, US President Donald Trump ordered a crackdown on drug cartels, accusing the governments of Colombia and Venezuela of helping to “flood” the American market with drugs. Nearly 230 people have been killed in US strikes on alleged drug boats. Critics in the US and abroad have described the operations as extrajudicial killings and potential war crimes. Officials in Colombia and Venezuela have claimed that some of those killed were ordinary fishermen.
The boat strikes have failed to reduce the amount of cocaine entering the United Statesand have instead prompted cartels to adapt their tactics in ways that undermine traditional investigative methods, the Washington Post reported in July, citing an internal assessment by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Amazon Says Cloud Infrastructure In Bahrain, UAE 'Beyond Saving'
Amazon Web Services (AWS) says it cannot restore access to its cloud-computing facility in Bahrain or one of three data-hosting zones in the UAE due to the extensive damage caused by Iranian retaliatory strikes, Reuters reported on 15 September.
"The damage to our infrastructure spanned multiple Availability Zones and exceeded what our regional and multi-AZ services are designed to withstand," AWS reported in its status update seen by Reuters.
In the UAE, resources and data held exclusively within one zone, labeled mec1-az2, have been damaged beyond hope of recovery, the company said, as engineers are still salvaging what they can from the two other battered zones and across the wider Emirati region.
An availability zone refers to a cluster of one or more data centers sitting inside the same geographic region, the structure AWS relies on to keep services running when a single site goes down.
The outages trace back to March, when the US and Israel attacked Iran, and Tehran responded with missile and drone salvos against Israel and Gulf states hosting US military bases.
AWS confirmed at the time that two of its UAE facilities took direct hits, while a drone strike near one of its Bahraini sites left the infrastructure there destroyed.
Most Bahrain-based customers shifted their workloads elsewhere on AWS advice before the region went dark in April, but the company says it has now exhausted every option for recovering whatever was left behind.
The losses have called into question the resilience of the Gulf's fast-expanding cloud and AI infrastructure. The UAE is already redrawing plans to war-proof a major AI data center project, weighing decentralized site building alongside underground and blast-resistant construction, and even equipping the data center itself with anti-air defenses.
Israel and the US have long ago transformed AI infrastructure into a weapon of war deployed extensively across West Asian theaters.
Cloud platforms, data centers, and high-capacity computing systems now help store intelligence, process intercepted communications, analyze surveillance, and support military operations across West Asia, extensively so in Gaza and Iran.
Iran maintains that data centers operated by US technology companies are not simply civilian facilities, but strategic assets supporting US and Israeli aggression, thereby making them legitimate targets for retaliation.
AI has become a central instrument of US and Israeli warfare across West Asia, embedded in how targets are chosen, tracked, and struck.
Israel has weaponized AI platforms including automated targeting systems like The Gospel, Lavender, and Where’s Daddy? to harvest mass data, autonomously generate kill lists, and orchestrate systematic airstrikes and assassinations against Palestinians.
Backed by corporate infrastructure like Microsoft Azure, which stored massive caches of intercepted Palestinian communications, the Israeli military has deployed AI-driven drone surveillance to track and assassinate Palestinians.
The US has run algorithmic warfare systems such as Palantir's Maven to process satellite, drone, and radar intelligence, using machine learning to speed the production of targeting recommendations against Iranian forces.
More than 1,000 targets were designated within the first 24 hours of the war on Iran, one of which resulted in the massacre of at least 150 people, including at least 120 schoolchildren at the Shajareh Tayyebeh elementary school in Minab.

A Danish military helicopter was conducting dangerous maneuvers close to a Russian warship in the Baltic Sea, Moscow’s ambassador to Copenhagen has said, after the NATO member accused the vessel of reckless behavior. The incident adds to tensions between Russia and the US-led military bloc as its European members seek to provide more weapons to Ukraine.
The encounter was first reported by Denmark on Tuesday. According to a brief statement by the Danish Armed Forces, an unnamed Russian frigate fired flares at a small Fennec helicopter the previous evening as its crew was photographing the vessel during “a routine mission.” One of the flares “passed close to the aircraft,” the military said.
Danish officials said the encounter took place in international waters off Gedser, a town at the southern tip of the Danish island of Falster, across the western Baltic Sea from Germany. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the Russian ambassador had been summoned, describing the incident as “completely unacceptable.” Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen condemned what she described as “reckless action from Russia towards Danish military during a routine overflight.”
Russian Ambassador Vladimir Barbin said on Telegram that Moscow “will thoroughly investigate all the circumstances of the incident.”
“However, this is not the first time that Danish Air Force helicopters have carried out dangerous maneuvers near Russian warships when they were at sea and outside Denmark’s territorial waters,” he added.
“The Danish side’s attempts to explain the helicopter’s provocative actions against the Russian frigate as ‘routine practice’ give rise to serious concern about the possible consequences of such recklessness,”Barbin said.
The Russian envoy pointed to a similar episode in August 2025, when Moscow accused a Danish military helicopter of flying dangerously close to the Russian anti-submarine vessel Vice Admiral Kulakov east of the German island of Fehmarn. Russia said the aircraft risked colliding with the ship and complained that its crew had failed to establish radio contact or respond to warnings.
Barbin also said Denmark had rejected Russian proposals for an agreement to prevent incidents at sea and in the air.

Yeah, the engine begins to wind down, the horn sounds, they drop and the horn stops, then close to the ground the horn sounds again. That indicates (along with the pilot saying oh fuck) he tried to autorotate and got the rotor rpm back up and then realized where he could go and there wasn’t enough energy to land anywhere good. He pulled collective to flair and the horn sounded again and he landed hard.

The scene on the ground is horrific. You can see in some photos a worker lying prone on the ground and then dragged away, where they erected the loss of life tent. Brutal stuff, the cabin was almost completely covered in flames and is now just melted and twisted metal. How unbelievably tragic.

A decade ago, Seattle was the poster child of American tech prosperity. Amazon and Microsoft had turned a midsize Pacific Northwest city into a magnet for engineers, executives, and capital, adding roughly 40,000 jobs per year at the peak of the boom, according to the Puget Sound Regional Council.
Today, more than one-third of downtown Seattle’s office space sits empty, its job postings have collapsed faster than almost any other U.S. metro, and even Starbucks—the coffee giant founded in the city in 1971—is shifting jobs south to Nashville, as it commits to a $100 million, 2,000-person new footprint in Music City. The story of Seattle’s reversal unfolds in three overlapping arcs: an office market in free fall, a labor market that has gone from boom to bust, and a policy environment that has made survival harder for the small businesses left behind.
Arc one: the zombie towers
Seattle’s downtown office vacancy rate hit 35.6% in the fourth quarter of 2025, up from 32.3% a year earlier, according to Cushman & Wakefield data. That marks a stunning reversal from the pre-pandemic era: As recently as early 2025, the central business district’s availability rate—offices with departures pending—and vacancy rate were already hitting all-time highs based on CoStar data stretching back to 1982.
Some brokers put the number even higher, with Colliers reporting vacancy touching 39.1% in late 2024 as remote work, tech layoffs, and cautious leasing decisions compounded. Office building values in the district have plunged sharply as a result, with landlords struggling to fill space abandoned by major tenants.
Arc two: the labor market reversal
The office crisis is inseparable from a broader collapse in hiring. Seattle metro job postings fell 35% between February 2020 and October 2025, the second-steepest drop of any major U.S. metro after San Francisco’s 37% decline, according to Axios’s analysis of Indeed data.
Tech firms in the area have announced tens of thousands of job reductions since 2023, primarily driven by Microsoft, Amazon, and Blue Origin. The region posted a net loss of 13,000 jobs in 2025—its first annual decline since the pandemic and a stark reversal from the 40,000-job annual gains of the boom years.
Arc three: the policy squeeze
Into this contraction came a wage floor with no exceptions. Seattle’s minimum wage, $20.76 an hour and applied uniformly to all employers regardless of size since January 2025, has intensified pressure on small businesses trying to survive the downtown exodus.
A peer-reviewed study published in Labour Economics found the wage ordinance’s announcement effect actually deterred new business formation within Seattle’s borders while generating positive “spillover” openings in neighboring suburbs, suggesting firms redirected growth rather than uniformly closing shop. Earlier University of Washington research similarly found the wage hikes reduced low-wage workers’ hours by about 9% even as hourly pay rose roughly 3%, per Ballotpedia’s fact-check compilation.
What makes Seattle’s situation distinct from other regional slowdowns is how tightly these three arcs lock together. CoStar estimates Seattle won’t fully break out of the vacancy cycle before 2027—a timeline that assumes the feedback loop stops tightening, which so far it hasn’t.

Your core idea is correct and existing airspeed and altitude gives a pilot more options for autorotation, but its not really the reason why most helicopters circle over an area as a practice. Circling does give you more landing options whereas when you are hovering at that altitude, your are committed to landing / autorotating directly below you.
Losing engine power while hovering is a bad time, even at altitude. If you're hovering 300–500 feet above the ground, you have just enough altitude to enter an autorotation, but you start with essentially zero airspeed. The pilot needs to lower the collective immediately to preserve rotor RPM and establish autorotation, then use the available altitude and airspeed to manage the descent and flare for landing.
There are height - velocity charts that basically tell you where power off landings will not be possible.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is stripping tens of millions of dollars in U.S. military assistance from countries in Europe and the Middle East to support conservative-leaning governments in Central and South America.
The State Department on Tuesday notified Congress that it will reprogram $52 million in foreign military financing from Slovakia, North Macedonia, Tunisia and Iraq to Panama, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio visited Colombia, Ecuador and Peru last week and pledged to them additional support as the Trump administration has prioritized the Western Hemisphere in its foreign policy with an emphasis on combating drug trafficking and illegal immigration.
It is just the latest in a series of moves that have reduced either money or troop deployments to Europe in response to President Donald Trump's complaints about NATO allies not spending enoughon their defense budgets and other matters. Both North Macedonia and Slovakia are NATO members.
But it also comes as the administration has put particular attention on the Western Hemisphere, aligning deeply with right-wing governments as Trump celebrates a renewal of the 19th century Monroe Doctrine establishing Washington's dominance in the Americas.
Foreign military financing provides recipient countries with U.S. taxpayer dollars to allow them to purchase military equipment from American defense contractors.
The State Department said the funds would be used to "combat narcoterrorism in our backyard and help continue to secure the Panama Canal," adding that the Western Hemisphere has been historically neglected in U.S. military assistance.
"These funds will prevent adversaries from establishing strategic footholds in our hemisphere," the department said in a veiled jab at China, which has increasingly sought to boost its presence in Latin America.
The shift of money does not eliminate foreign military financing for Tunisia, Iraq, North Macedonia or Slovakia, although the exact amount remaining for those countries was not immediately clear.
The State Department said, though, that the current distribution of financing does "not align with the administration's prioritization of" the Western Hemisphere.

A federal judge asked federal prosecutors Tuesday to investigate Philadelphia's Democratic District Attorney Larry Krasner over allegations he may have obstructed justice and possibly committed other crimes in his handling of a post-conviction case.
U.S. District Judge Paul Diamond Jr. disqualified Krasner and one of his deputies from handling the case, which was related to a man seeking to overturn his second-degree murder conviction. Krasner has sided with the man.
Diamond ruled that there is evidence that Krasner and his deputy, Matthew Stiegler, may have sought to obstruct justice by ordering prosecutors to "protect the office," when the court began investigating his handling of the case.
He also claimed there is evidence he may have attempted to persuade four prosecutors in the office to “urge the court to accept a false narrative,” which would “amount to criminal conspiracy.”
“I have thus reluctantly concluded that Philadelphia’s highest law enforcement official and one of his top assistants may have violated the law,” Diamond said in the memorandum. “In these circumstances, with the issuance of this Memorandum, I refer the DAO, Mr. Krasner, and Stiegler to this District’s United States Attorney’s Office for investigation and other appropriate action.”
Krasner rejected the judge's claims and vowed to appeal the case to a higher court, according to NBC News.
“I respectfully and vigorously disagree with the court’s findings of fact and conclusions of law,” he said. “I look forward to appealing to the higher court as soon as the law allows. This remains a pending matter."
The referral comes as Krasner faces serious criticism for his attempts to overturn murder convictions without proper reviews, despite winning reelection last year. He was first elected as the city's district attorney in 2018.

New Hampshire Supreme Court Justice Gordon MacDonald resigned his post Tuesday and admitted that he violated the judicial code of conduct in a matter involving a nearly $50,000 payout to one of his senior staffers.
MacDonald sent his resignation to New Hampshire GOP Gov. Kelly Ayotte, acknowledging his violations and pointed to a stipulation and agreement he reached with the court’s judicial conduct committee.
“I believe this is in the best interests of the New Hampshire Judicial Branch,” he wrote in the letter. “I accept responsibility and accountability for my conduct.”
The resignation revolves around his behavior toward longtime aide Dianne Martin, whom he helped collect a nearly $50,000 payout by laying her off last year and then promptly rehiring her for a different job within the judicial branch.
Martin was hired in 2021 as director of the Administrative Office of the Courts, but was laid off from the role in 2025 and rehired a few days later in April 2025 as general counsel for the Office of Bar Admission. Because she was laid off, she was entitled to an additional payout, which represented her unused vacation time and sick leave, plus other benefits.
MacDonald admitted in the agreement that his behavior toward Martin amounted to favoritism. He also acknowledged that his actions meant he failed to promote public confidence in the judiciary’s impartiality, failed to avoid the appearance of impropriety and to perform his administrative duties competently and diligently with regard to her employment.
MacDonald's resignation is effective immediately and marks a sudden end to his five-year tenure leading the state's judicial branch.

The Justice Department announced Tuesday that former Venezuelan Minister of Industry and National Production Alex Saab, an ally and confidant of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Saab has been accused of participating in a sprawling international money laundering conspiracy involving the corruption and exploitation of a Venezuelan public welfare program.
The plea change comes after Saab pleaded not guilty earlier this year to claims that he was allegedly involved in a scheme to bribe Venezuelan public officials to secure lucrative Comité Local de Abastecimiento y Producción contracts to import food into Venezuela.
The DOJ has accused Saab and his partners of using shell companies, creating fraudulent invoices and falsifying shipping records and other documents to siphon off hundreds of millions of dollars that were intended to be used to purchase food for Venezuelans.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Jason Reding Quiñones confirmed the plea change in a post on X and said the Venezuelan also agreed to forfeit $195 million. Saab was previously granted clemency by former President Joe Biden.
It was not immediately clear if Saab was offered a plea deal, but he currently faces up to 20 years in federal prison for the crime.

A news helicopter flying near the site of a deadly bus accident in Los Angeles crashed itself in a nearby parking lot Tuesday evening, killing at least three people, officials said.
Capt. Branden Silverman, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Fire Department, told a news conference that authorities were still sorting out the circumstances of the crash but that at least one of the dead was outside in the parking lot.
Authorities were trying to determine how many of the other victims were actually on the chopper, according to The Associated Press.
One survivor was taken to a hospital, officials said.
More than 50 firefighters responded to the helicopter crash, which ignited a fire that damaged four vehicles and two storage containers in the Chatworth neighborhood of Los Angeles.
Silverman said the helicopter was believed to be used for news gathering and was “pretty well destroyed” but he did not immediately identify the company it was working for.
NBC Los Angeles reported the chopper was working for its station.
“We knew it was a news chopper, we knew we’d lost contact with our people out there, and we’ve just received the confirmation that, in fact, News Chopper 4 went down just before 7 o’clock tonight in Chatsworth,” anchor Colleen Williams reported during an interview air newscast.
The chopper crashed near the site of an accident between a Los Angeles Metro bus and a passenger vehicle that killed two people and injured others, NBC reported.

Polis' Reasoning: Governor Polis stated his decision was based on the belief that Peters' original sentence was "disparately harsh" and "extremely unusual" for a 70-year-old, first-time, non-violent offender. He echoed a state appeals court's findings that the trial judge had improperly factored Peters' protected political speech and conspiratorial beliefs into the severity of her punishment.
