US President Donald Trump says he believes his country's ceasefire with Iran is over, responding to a question about the state of the truce following fresh attacks across the Gulf.

Whether it means a return to all-out war remains to be seen, given Mr Trump said he would continue speaking with his negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner about the next steps.

But he labelled the Iranians as "liars", "scum" and "sick people".

"They're cuckoo. As far as I'm concerned, it's over," he said at a NATO summit in Türkiye.

"It's just a waste of time dealing with them."

It comes after the US military launched fresh strikes against Iranian ships in the Persian Gulf, in response to attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

The Tomb of Gilgamesh: The 2003 Iraq Discovery History

In April 2003, a German-led archaeological team announced they had identified what may be the burial site of Gilgamesh, the semi-legendary king of Uruk within the broader historical places of ancient Mesopotamia whose name survives in the world’s oldest known epic poem. The find was made beneath the dry riverbed of the ancient Euphrates, near the ruined Sumerian city of Uruk in southern Iraq, using ground-penetrating radar that revealed the outline of a tomb-like structure exactly where the Epic of Gilgamesh says the king was buried. The discovery has never been excavated — the 2003 Iraq War broke out within weeks of the announcement — and the site remains, to this day, untouched.

The 2003 Discovery

The expedition was directed by Jörg Fassbinder of the Bavarian State Department for Historical Monuments in Munich, working under a permit from the Iraqi State Board of Antiquities and Heritage. Using magnetometer surveys — a non-invasive technique that reads subtle variations in the earth’s magnetic field caused by buried structures — Fassbinder’s team mapped over 100 hectares of Uruk’s ancient cityscape, including streets, gardens, palaces, and what appeared to be a tomb in the bed of the long-dried Euphrates. Fassbinder was characteristically cautious: “I don’t want to say it definitely was the grave of King Gilgamesh,” he told the BBC at the time, “but it looks very similar to that described in the epic.” The Iraq War interrupted further work before any excavation could take place.

Was Gilgamesh a real person?

Evidence from third-millennium inscriptions

Scholars are divided. The historical Gilgamesh, if he existed, ruled the Sumerian city-state of Uruk around 2700 BCE, during the Early Dynastic II period. He appears as the fifth king of the First Dynasty of Uruk in the Sumerian King List, a much later document that nonetheless preserves a memory of the city’s earliest rulers. Several inscriptions from the third millennium BCE refer to him by name, suggesting he was historically real before he became literary. The mythologised Gilgamesh of the epic — two-thirds god, one-third human, friend of Enkidu, seeker of immortality after Enkidu’s death — is a literary figure built up over a thousand years of retelling.

The Epic of Gilgamesh

The Epic of Gilgamesh is the oldest surviving work of literature, predating Homer’s Iliad by roughly fifteen hundred years. The earliest fragments are written in Sumerian and date to around 2100 BCE; the longest and most complete version is the Standard Babylonian Epic of about 1200 BCE, preserved on twelve cuneiform tablets in the seventh-century BCE library-tradition collection of King Ashurbanipal at Nineveh. Tablet XI famously contains a Mesopotamian flood narrative (paralleled in the earlier Akkadian poem Atra-Hasis) that parallels the biblical account of Noah closely enough that its discovery in 1872 caused a public sensation in Victorian London. The epic ends with Gilgamesh returning to Uruk, building the city’s great walls, and being buried beneath the Euphrates — exactly the location the German team’s survey is said to point to.

Uruk: The City Beneath the Desert

Uruk, the city Gilgamesh is said to have ruled and built, was one of the largest urban centres of the ancient world. At its height around 2900 BCE it covered roughly 6 square kilometres and held a population estimated at 50,000–80,000 — comparable in size to many medieval European cities. Its walls, which the epic credits Gilgamesh with building, were some 9 kilometres long. Modern Iraqi archaeology has been able to map most of Uruk’s plan from the surface and from limited excavation, but the dried Euphrates riverbed — where the proposed tomb lies — remains largely unexplored. The geomagnetic surveys revealed garden plots inside the city, supporting the long-suspected nickname “the Venice of the Desert” given to Uruk by some earlier scholars on the basis of the network of canals that once threaded its streets.

Why the Tomb Has Never Been Excavated

Three obstacles have prevented further work since 2003. First, security: southern Iraq has remained difficult for foreign archaeological teams for most of the period since the war. Second, the State Board of Antiquities and Heritage in Baghdad would have to authorise an excavation of this importance, and the bureaucratic and political conditions have not aligned. Third, the site has potential religious significance — many of Iraq’s Mesopotamian sites attract conservative objections to disturbance — and excavating the supposed tomb of a king whose name is one of the most famous in the Iraqi cultural canon would not be a trivial decision. The site remains, in effect, a sealed chapter of Mesopotamian archaeology, waiting for conditions that have not yet returned.
