U.S. doctor with Ebola released from German hospital after recovering from deadly virus

The U.S. doctor who contracted Ebola while working on a humanitarian mission in Congo has been released from a hospital in Germany after recovering from the potentially deadly disease.

Dr. Peter Stafford was working with the missionary group Serge in the Congo when he was infected with the virus, the group said. He was evacuated to a hospital in Berlin to receive care on May 20, according to the group. His wife, also a doctor volunteering with Serge, and their four children were also evacuated and quarantined.

Peter Stafford was treated at Charité hospital in Berlin, one of the top hospitals in Europe, where he received "antiviral therapy and additional supportive medical measures during the first week," the hospital said in a statement Saturday. His condition consistently improved over the course of his treatment, the hospital said.

"The initially high viral load decreased substantially under antiviral treatment and supportive care," Charité said Saturday. "Since May 30, no virus has been detected in the daily follow-up tests. In accordance with internationally accepted criteria-complete absence of symptoms for more than 72 hours and negative virus detection in repeated PCR tests-the competent public health authority lifted the isolation order today at 12:00 PM."

While quarantined, neither Stafford's wife, Rebekah, nor their four children ever developed symptoms of Ebola, according to Charité. He was reunited with his five family members on Saturday.

"We are very pleased with the successful course of treatment and consider this a significant therapeutic success," Leif Erik Sander, director of the Department of Infectious Diseases and Critical Care Medicine at Charité, said in a statement. "On behalf of the entire team, we thank all participating specialties and departments that made the successful treatment in the specialized isolation unit possible."

The Bundibugyo ebolavirus outbreak in Congo, which has spread to neighboring Uganda, is causing serious concern among health officials and is likely larger than what has officially been reported, they have warned. The Bundibugyo strain is significantly less common than the Zaire strain of the virus and has no vaccines or treatment.

There have been 452 confirmed cases and 82 confirmed deaths in the Congo as of Thursday, and 19 confirmed cases and two confirmed deaths in Uganda as of Friday, according to the countries' respective health ministries.

Stafford was exposed to the virus during a surgery at Nyankunde Hospital in Bunia, a city in eastern Congo, Serge previously said. He has worked at the hospital since 2023, according to the group.

"I received first-class care, including experimental therapies currently being trialed for this type of virus," Stafford said in a statement provided by Charité. "Words cannot adequately express my gratitude. Thank you to everyone who made this possible. Our thoughts remain with the people in the Congo who do not have access to such care."

A third doctor working with Serge, Dr. Patrick LaRochelle, was also potentially exposed while working in a Congo hospital. The American was asymptomatic and in quarantine at Bulovka Hospital in Prague, according to Serge's last update on May 24.

The minister pointed to emerging areas of cooperation, including energy and technology, saying recent agreements between the two countries could unlock new opportunities.

“This important step opens new avenues for collaboration in energy security, technology transfer, skills development and innovation,” he noted, referring to expanding cooperation in sectors such as nuclear energy.

Nduhungirehe also welcomed Washington’s continued use of the term “Genocide against the Tutsi” when referring to the 1994 genocide, saying the terminology reflects historical accuracy and supports efforts to combat genocide denial.

He said the U.S. decision to use the correct appellation “honours the truth of history, pays respect to the victims and survivors, and contributes to the global fight against genocide denial and distortion.”

According to Nduhungirehe, the future of Rwanda-U.S. relations remains promising despite occasional differences between the two countries.

“As we look ahead, it is clear that the best chapters of Rwanda–United States relations are still being written. The opportunities before us are significant, and together we can continue building a partnership that delivers lasting benefits for both our countries and our peoples,” he said.

The remarks come at a time when Kigali and Washington are working together on several regional and strategic issues, including implementation of the peace process involving Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

While the relationship has experienced some friction over U.S. sanctions imposed on certain Rwandan officials and members of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), both sides have continued diplomatic engagement.

Rwanda’s Ambassador to the United States, Mathilde Mukantabana, recently emphasized that dialogue between Kigali and Washington remains active despite the sanctions on the RDF and senior military officials.

Responding to questions about efforts to have the sanctions lifted, Mukantabana said the measures “have not closed diplomatic channels,” underscoring Rwanda’s commitment to maintaining engagement with U.S. authorities.

Her comments align with Rwanda’s broader position that cooperation with the United States continues to be important in advancing regional peace, economic development, innovation, and security.

The latest signals of cooperation, particularly Rwanda’s interest in partnerships with NASA and other high-technology institutions, suggest Kigali is looking beyond traditional areas of collaboration and seeking to strengthen its position in emerging sectors that could support long-term economic transformation.

As Rwanda advances its space ambitions and expands its scientific and technological capabilities, cooperation with NASA could become one of the most visible symbols of a relationship that both countries say is entering a new chapter.

The authority for the United States government tocapture the electronic records of all Americans without warrant falls under the auspices of FISA-702.Reauthorization of the current authority is being debated. This is a deep walk into why this issue is so important to our government.

Having researched almost every aspect to the construct and the argument,I am confident FISA-702 authority underpins a much bigger, quasi-constitutional justification for the collection of U.S. citizen metadata. Without the 702 authority the legal justification for the apparatus of surveillance no longer exists. It really is that simple.

It is not the just the illegal searching of the NSA database that presents the issue, although that aspect has received the majority of attention,the capture itself violates the Fourth Amendment. The only way the government can justify the capture of U.S. Citizen data is if there is some quasi-constitutional or national security reason for it. That’s where FISA-702 comes in.==

Take away “702” search authority, and the data collection argument collapses. Any“incidental” search of the database then loses any plausible legal justification. 702 is the camel’s nose under the privacy tent that forms the baseline for all data records to be intercepted, stored and ultimately available for review.

♦Only one legal case has ever pushed into the sphere of challenging this unconstitutional exploitation. A 2025 decision in the U.S. v. Hasbajrami in Brooklyn, New York, where Eastern District Judge LaShann DeArcy Hall identified the misuse of FISA-702 “backdoor searches” regarding defendant, Agron Hasbajrami.

Hasbajrami plead guilty to charges of attempting to provide material support to a terrorist organization, alleging that he intended to travel to the Federally Administered Tribal Area of Pakistan, where he expected to join a terrorist organization, receive training, and ultimately fight against U.S. forces and others in Afghanistan and Pakistan.However, after his guilty plea, while he is serving time in prison, prosecutors admitted some of the evidence against him came as a result of privacy violations, unlawful FISA-702 searches.

justice_scales4.pngHasbajrami sought to have the evidence against him thrown out on 4th amendment grounds (fruit of the poisoned tree) and withdraw his guilty plea.The Second Circuit Court of Appeals denied Hasbarjami’s blanket evidence suppression motion for the exclusion of all FISA Section 702 collection in his case but did not weigh in on whether the warrantless Section 702 database queries were constitutional, instead remanding the case back to Judge Hall for a review of that question.

Judge DeArchy Hall received the case again and reviewed all of the government motions against the request to suppress the evidence.What results is a very well-constructed explanation and opinion of how FISA-702 was misused in the case[SEE 60-pg Opinion HERE].

Thejudge determined that U.S. government officials did factually violatethe technical rules and procedures for the use of FISA-702 searches, and the DOJ should have gone to court to obtain a warrantto look at Hasbajrami’s private communication.

In essence, yes, the 4th amendment protections of Hasbajrami were violated. However, the issue of overturning the resulting evidence becomes a matter of legal distinction.

The defendant, who admitted guilt (twice) did not claim the evidence was a result of misuse or a wrongful approach in searching the NSA’s library, from which FISA-702 search results are determined (a structural flaw in the defense motion). Instead, the defendant filed asuppression motion on the issue of his 4th amendment rights being violated.

The judge opinion holds that the FBI’s Section 702 queries violated the Fourth Amendment; however, the court ultimately denied the defendant’s motion to suppress the resulting evidence on separate grounds.

The value in the ruling by Judge Hall, is a few fold:

First, it is an excellent review of the FISA-702 origin and all of the constitutional arguments that surround the controversial law.

Second, the ruling clearly shows that FISA-702 searches are currently being used unlawfully and continually by government officials.

Third, the ruling clearly shows how “backdoor” 702 searches are violations of the Fourth Amendment. [Albeit in this case, of no value to the argument put forth by Hasbajrami.]
