Mosquitoes typically spread disease, rather than prevent it, but Chinese scientists have proposed using the insects as an unlikely vector to deliver vaccines to bats.

In a study published in Science Advances journal, researchers designed mosquitoes which carry an immunisation for rabies and Nipah viruses within their saliva. This is transferred when bats eat insects, or the insects feed on the bats.

The proposal would solve a question many have grappled with: how do you vaccinate a flying mammal, which often roosts in caves in with millions of others, without exposing yourself to the diseases they carry?

Some consider this an important circle to square because bats host a wide range of dangerous pathogens – from Nipah and rabies to Ebola and some coronaviruses.As people encroach on their habitats, there are concerns that diseases are increasingly jumping into people and livestock. Vaccination could help to reduce transmission risk.

“Directly targeting bats, the natural reservoirs of these viruses, is crucial to preventing spillover events and mitigating public health risks,” the authors wrote in the paper, adding that traditional approaches have largely failed.

Experimental vaccines tested on captive bats haven’t worked effectively in wild populations, whileculling the mammals – which is practised in some regions to control rabies – has backfired. The disruption to colonies and the harm to ecosystems, plus the need for people to be in close contact with the bats to kill them, has instead increased virus transmission.

The Chinese research team created a vaccine based on a weakened version of vesicular somatitis virus (VSV), which can infect both insects and mammals and is already used in an approved Ebola vaccine made by Merck.

They then designed two innovative delivery methods to vaccinate bats against Nipah and rabies – which have fatality rates of up to 75 per cent and nearly 100 per cent, respectively.

In one route, researchers fed the Aedes aegypti mosquito blood containing the vaccine, which replicates inside the insect’s salivary glands. This means it is transferred when the insect bites the bat, or the bat eats the insects.

In experiments in the laboratory, both bats and mice exposed to the sterilised vaccine-carrying mosquitoes developed neutralising antibodies against both diseases.

The researchers also conducted a challenge trial for rabies – all of the animals exposed to the virus survived the lethal infection.They could not replicate this for Nipah as they did not have access to a high-level biosecurity laboratory, but said that the antibody levels in the vaccinated animals were similar.

DOD threatens ‘severe consequences’ for drone operators flying in restricted airspace

The Defense Department and its federal partners issued a warning Friday to drone operators, threatening to impose massive fines, imprisonment and other measures on those who illegally fly unmanned aerial systems in restricted airspace.

Drone incursions over stateside military bases and other restricted areas have been widespread in recent years as commercially available systems proliferate.

Just this week, the head of U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command revealed that American forces recently identified and defeated a small UAS threat over a “strategic” U.S. installation.

Agencies operating near the southern border have also been using weapon systems, including high-energy lasers, against suspicious drones, raising safety concerns among agencies like the FAA. Two incidents in Texas last month led to temporary airspace closures.

The federal government restricts who can fly UAS over certain areas, such as military facilities and civilian airports, to protect national security and public safety.

In a press release issued Friday, the DOD, Department of Justice, Department of Homeland Security and the FAA touted the government’s detection capabilities, declaring that Uncle Sam has a “zero-tolerance policy” for illegal drone operations and threatening rule violators with “severe consequences,” including potential fines upwards of $100,000, criminal charges, incarceration, and the confiscation of their systems.

“To enforce this zero-tolerance policy, our military and law enforcement agencies are equipped with state-of-the-art technology to detect unauthorized drone activity, often before it becomes a visible threat.

This technology allows authorities to not only detect an unauthorized drone but also to quickly and precisely locate the operator,” per the release.

In a statement, FAA Chief Counsel Liam McKenna said agencies will be stepping up enforcement and that drone users are “expected to follow FAA regulations just like any other pilot.”

Last year, the Pentagon set up a new Army-led counter-UAS organization known as Joint Interagency Task Force 401.

“If you fly an illegal drone, you will be caught,” JIATF 401 Director Army Brig. Gen. Matt Ross said in a statement.

“We have highly trained personnel and sophisticated tools to safely and effectively mitigate any drone threat. This is a true whole-of-government effort, and our number one priority is the safety of the American public.”

To support the crackdown on regulation violators, Steven Willoughby, executive director of DHS’s Program Executive Office for Drones and Counter-UAS, urged the public to report suspicious drone activity to law enforcement.

Israel Strikes Syrian Army Following Attack On Druze, Rocket Fire On Golan

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on March 20 that it struck Syrian army positions in response to attacks that targeted Druze civilians in the southern Syrian governorate of al-Suwayda a day earlier.

The strikes targeted a headquarters and weapons at several Syrian army positions in southern Syria, the military said in a statement.

“This was in response to the events yesterday, in which Druze civilians were attacked in the al-Suwayda area,” it added.

The IDF warned that it will “not allow harm to the Druze in Syria and will continue to act to protect them,” and that it will continue “to monitor developments in southern Syria and will act in accordance with the directives of the political leadership.”

The strikes targeted positions of the Syrian’s army’s 40th Division in the governorate of Daraa, which borders al-Suwayda, according to Syrian media, which said that two bases formerly known as the 12th Brigade in the vicinity of the town of Izraa and the 89th Regiment in the vicinity of the town of Jabab in the northern countryside of the governorate were hit. No casualties were reported.

Defense Minister Israel Katz commented on the strikes, saying, “We will not allow the Syrian regime to exploit our war against Iran and Hezbollah to harm the Druze. If necessary, we will attack with greater force.”

In a statement released a day earlier, the National Guard in al-Suwayda — a coalition of Druze armed factions reported to be backed by Israel — said that that nine people were killed in attacks carried out by the Syrian army; 12 people were detained at a checkpoint, and seven others were “abducted”; and that rockets and drones were used in the attacks.

I24NEWS reported on the same day that several rockets were launched from southern Syria towards Israel and IDF positions in the occupied Golan Heights.

The Israeli news outlet said that the rockets landed in open areas, far from the border and IDF positions, and didn’t cause any casualties.

The rockets were most likely fired by the Islamic Resistance Front in Syria in response to the ongoing American-Israeli war on Iran, or by the newly-emerging Movement to Deter the Occupation, which does not oppose the transitional government in the country.

The latest strikes were not the first time Israel hit Syria amid the ongoing war on Iran. Over the night of March 16 and 17, the IDF reportedly struck a truck carrying weapons in al-Suwayda.

A Study Suggests Aliens Aren’t Little Green Men. They’re Purple People Eaters

Earth is often called “the Pale Blue Dot” thanks to its bountiful oceans, but most of the planet’s land masses are actually dominated by the color green.

Plants use chlorophyll (which absorbs red and blue light but, reflects green light) to captures solar energy, and use carbon and water to make food through a process known as photosynthesis.

While this fourth grade biology lesson outlines the predominant way plant life thrives on our planet, life on other Earth-like exoplanets (especially those orbiting red dwarf stars) could use a different method entirely—one that would turn the whole world purple.

Scientists from Cornell University analyzed how alien plants that rely on infrared radiation for photosynthesis might transform the hues of alien worlds.

These kinds of bacteria, which include phototrophic anoxygenic bacteria and photoheterotrophic bacteria, could emit a distinctive “light fingerprint” that could be detectable by upcoming observatories, including the European Southern Observatory’s Extremely Large Telescope.

The results of the study were published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

“Purple bacteria can thrive under a wide range of conditions, making it one of the primary contenders for life that could dominate a variety of worlds,” Cornell University Ph.D. student Lígia Fonseca Coelho said in a press statement.

“They already thrive here in certain niches… just imagine if they were not competing with green plants, algae and bacteria: A red sun could give them the most favorable conditions for photosynthesis.”

To understand the color and chemical signature such a world would emit, Coelho and her colleagues gathered 20 specimens of purple sulfur and purple non-sulfur bacteria from various places around the world—including hydrothermal vents and even ponds near Cornell’s campus. These bacteria rely on low-energy red and infrared right for a photosynthesis-like process, and while purple bacteria might be a biological niche today, some scientists theorize that an ancient Earth was likely much more purple than it is today.

A 2022 study from the University of Maryland explored why plants reflect the color green when technically the Sun emits the most light in the blue-green spectrum.

The scientists argued that a light-sensitive molecule called retinal (which first appeared on Earth before chlorophyll) absorbed green light and reflect red and violet—which, to the human eye, would’ve looked purple.

When the molecule chlorophyll evolved on Earth—thanks in no small part to a rise in oxygen levels—the Sun’s green light was already being absorbed by retinal-leveraging plants.

So, instead, the molecule absorbed all other available light. Even though the Sun emits less light in that spectrum, chlorophyll were part of a more advanced, efficient system at producing photosynthesis, and Earth’s green hue began to take shape.

But on oxygen-poor exoplanets orbiting cool, red dwarf stars, things might be drastically different. Coelho developed various models of Earth-like planets across a range of wet and dry environments, and many of the simulated “light fingerprints” came back purple.

“If purple bacteria are thriving on the surface of a frozen Earth, an ocean world, a snowball Earth or a modern Earth orbiting a cooler star,” Coelho said in a press statement. “We now have the tools to search for them.”

So, when aliens finally do reach Earth, don’t count on “little green men.” As for flying purple people-eaters … well, now we’re on to something.

During a televised address on Thursday, Netanyahu lauded those who disobeyed the path of Jesus and instead committed crimes.

"Jesus Christ has no advantage over Genghis Khan. Because if you are strong enough, ruthless enough, powerful enough, evil will overcome good. Aggression will overcome moderation," Netanyahu said.

The clip of Netanyahu's remark went viral, withmany interpreting the comments as blasphemous and anti-Christian.

Condemnations also poured in from some netizens, saying the commentsexposed Netanyahu’s anti-Christian stance.

“This is one of the most disgusting anti-Christian comments I’ve heard from a world leader. Just another example of Netanyahu exposing his anti-Christian beliefs. And many Christians will again choose to ignore it,” one user said.

“Netanyahu thinks Genghis Khan > Jesus Christ. Why is it always OK to say anti-Christian things?”said another.

“Is there any more proof this guy is pure evil and anti-Christian?” wrote another.

Nathanyahu and his right-wing ministers, who represent an apartheid and genocidal regime, are notorious for committing crimes against Muslims and Christians alike in Gaza and across the occupied West Bank.

In addition to that, the Israeli regime forces keep storming and torching the Christian and Muslims' sacred sites across the occupied land on a daily basis.

Netanyahu’s remarks come as US President Donald Trump, along with the Israeli regime, launched a coordinated, unprovoked and reckless war of aggression against Iran.

Critics maintain that Trump had been drawn into this war by the Zionist lobby to watch Israeli interests in the region.

Billions of dollars of American taxpayers, who are mostly Christians, have so far been wasted in the ongoing aggression.

Honestly, as someone who has traveled a lot, India is the best country I have ever traveled to. It’s incredible. I will have been here for 9 days when I leave, and there is still so much to see and do. My experience has been amazing and India is portrayed negatively in the media as a place Amercians should avoid, but I realize a lot of that is completely made up.

The people, food, culture and hospitality culture are just incredible. I have felt safe and comfortable the entire time I have been here and India will truly be the next big super power. This country has incredible potential and you have to see it yourself to understand because the media only makes it out to be 3rd world.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Indian people are the nicest people I have ever met. I am very grateful for my time in India. I have enjoyed it so much and I hope I can come back every year.

Next time I want to visit South India. I have tried to do as much as possible these last 9 days but there is still so much to see and do.

All good things come to an end. I’ll be back (hopefully soon).
