Turkey may be using drones to show support for Gaza flotilla

Turkey appears to be using drones to monitor the Gaza-bound Global Sumud Flotilla, according to flight-tracking websites and open-source commentators.

The drones emerged over the last two days and seem to be high-level, large UAVs that can fly for many hours at a time. They appear to be circling over areas near the flotilla, and they seem to be flying from Turkey.

Ankara may be rotating several drones on station over the flotilla as the group of 40 vessels slowly makes its way southeast of Crete.

“Tensions flared in the Eastern Mediterranean on Friday as Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and a frigate operated just south of Crete, citing the ‘protection’ of the Global Sumud Flotilla, a group of vessels sailing toward the Gaza Strip carrying humanitarian aid,” the Greek City Times news site reported.

The flotilla left the waters off Crete on Saturday after having anchored near the island of Koufonisia. It had traveled about 55 nautical miles by Sunday morning. It was unclear what type of drone Ankara might be using to monitor the flotilla.

The Turkish-made TAI Anka drone can fly for more than 24 hours, and its Anka-S variant is capable of operating for up to 30 hours at altitudes as high as 30,000 feet. At that height, the drone would not be visible from the flotilla.

The possible presence of a Turkish drone adds to the number of militaries responding to the flotilla. Italy and Spain said they would send naval ships on September 24 to monitor or possibly assist the flotilla after the group claimed to be attacked by drones on the evening between September 23 and September 24.

Italy then said it would send a second vessel. One of these ships apparently arrived on September 25. An NGO called EMERGENCY also sent a large support vessel Life Support.

The Turkish drone was flying with the call sign VATOZ21, according to Greek City Times and online commentators who follow open-source flight data.

“A Turkish UAV with the call sign VATOZ21 has been flying continuously over the flotilla, monitoring activity only a few kilometers off the Cretan coast,” Greek City Times reported.

“A second Turkish drone was also launched in the same area on Thursday, reinforcing Ankara’s aerial presence.”

A Turkish frigate had been spotted, the report said. Notably, Turkey and Egypt recently conducted naval drills.

Greece’s Hellenic Coast Guard has been monitoring the flotilla as well, while Greek F-16 jets conducted flights near it, Greek City Times reported.

This is the 'last stretch'

Turkish media is closely following the progress of the flotilla. Ankara has been strongly supportive of the Palestinians and very anti-Israel over the past several years.

Meanwhile, the flotilla’s organizers said this was their “last stretch” as they head toward Gaza from Greece.

“The last stretch is here,” they said Sunday. “After weeks at sea, the flotilla sails with the prayers of millions and the hopes of Gaza’s children.”

The flotilla was 400 nautical miles from Gaza on Sunday. It would take at least three more days of sailing to reach the coast of Israel at its current pace.

It changed course slightly to head toward the Egyptian Port of Alexandria. It was unclear whether it would stop in Egypt on the way to Gaza. If it continues at its present pace, it could take four days to reach the enclave, meaning it would arrive on Yom Kippur.

If it stops in Egypt, however, this would add several more days to the trip. Moving slowly, the flotilla has been progressing at the speed of about four to five knots an hour.

Denmark bans drone flights after fresh sightings of suspicious aerial objects outside military bases

Denmark has ordered a ban on drone flights following fresh sightings of suspicious aerial objects above military bases.

The Danish military said in a statement it had deployed 'several capacities' in response to the overnight sightings at bases, declining further comment on the nature of its response.

It comes as drones were spotted hovering over Danish military sites overnight for a second day straight, setting NATO's alarm bells ringing.

'The Armed Forces can confirm that drones have been observed at several of the Armed Forces' locations during the night. Several capacities were deployed,' the military said in a statement on Sunday.

It provided no other details about the incidents or the military' response, and Danish media reported that no airports had been closed due to the drone presence overnight.

Three planes were also diverted away from an airport in Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, on Sunday, after drones were spotted.

Mysterious sightings across Denmark and Norway since September 22 prompted the closure of several airports, with Denmark hinting as potential Russian involvement.

On Saturday, Denmark's military said unidentified drones had been observed over 'several military sites' overnight Friday, but refused to disclose any further details.

Police did confirm that 'one to two drones' had been observed on Friday evening near and over the Karup military base, the country's biggest base which houses all of the armed forces' helicopters, airspace surveillance, flight school and support functions.

Possible sightings were also reported in Germany, Norway and Lithuania.

Aalborg and Billund airports were closed overnight on Wednesday into Thursday as drones flew towards them and bases where Danish F-16 and F-35 warplanes are based.

And drones in Copenhagen grounded flights in the Danish capital for hours on Monday night. There have also been incursions into Polish, Estonian and Romanian airspace in recent weeks.

The Danish defense ministry said that the country's government had accepted an offer from Sweden to 'lend Denmark a military anti-drone capability'.

In Germany, several drones were reported in the northern state of Schleswig-Holstein, which borders Denmark, from Thursday into Friday night.

The country's interior minister, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, said that 'the state police are currently significantly stepping up their drone defense measures, also in coordination with other northern German states'.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that in regard to frequent attacks on infrastructure and data networks, 'we are not at war, but we are no longer living in peace either.'

The Kremlin has been accused of launching a campaign of hybrid attacks across Europe, exposing the vulnerability of the continent's airspace at a time of high tensions between Moscow and NATO.

European ministers are now scrambling to draw up plans for a continent-wide 'drone wall' to counter Moscow's alleged aerial incursions, as the Kremlin warns that any strike on its aircraft would result in direct conflict with NATO.

Nations including Denmark, Finland, Poland and the Baltic states joined Ukraine at a summit on Friday to thrash out plans for what EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has described as 'the bedrock of credible defence.'

NATO has 'enhanced vigilance' in the Baltic following the intrusions, a spokesperson for the defence alliance said.

The reinforced measures 'include multiple intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance platforms and at least one air-defence frigate' in the region to the west of Russia, alliance spokesman Martin O'Donnell told a press conference overnight Saturday to Sunday.

Copenhagen is to host a European Union summit gathering heads of government on Wednesday and Thursday.

Windracers makes history with UK’s 1st international civil drone approval

The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has approved Windracers, a British civil and defence drone manufacturer, to conduct the UK’s first, civil, unmanned aerial system (UAS) for international operation.

Windracers has been given approval by the CAA and Luftfartstilsynet (Civil Aviation Authority Norway) to fly its dual-use heavy-lift drone, Windracers ULTRA, beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) from Tingwall Airport in the Shetlands to Haugesund Airport in Norway.

The approval process focused on how current day regulations could be used and how best to overcome a range of challenges, including safety, liability, international obligations and environmental mitigations around the planned flight.

This is the first time a long-distance drone has been approved to fly for civil purposes between UK airspace and the adjoining airspace of another state.

The approval was enabled by the creation of temporary danger areas, providing a controlled corridor to facilitate the flight.

The airspace will cover a distance of 378 kilometers (235 miles) from Shetland, over the North Sea, and across the Scottish/Polaris Flight Information Region (FIR) boundary into Norwegian airspace.

At the heart of this milestone is Windracers ULTRA, a dual-use drone capable of transporting a useful load of up to 150 kg with a range of up to 1,000 km.

Windracers ULTRA is multi-mission and offers an optional 3-door drop bay floor to safely and accurately parachute aid and supplies if required.

High-power microwave system downs 49 drones in one shot – weaponized electromagnetic interference erases drone swarms en masse

U.S. electronics warfare specialist Epirus recently demonstrated its flagship Leonidas weapon at a live fire trial in Indiana.

The Leonidas system is a high-power microwave (HPM) weapon that “delivers weaponized electromagnetic interference to counter swarms of robotic, asymmetric threats.”

During the demo, the latest version of Leonidas successfully disabled all 61 of the 61 drones. Epirus' Leonidas system even managed to down 49 drones in a single ‘shot’ of its HPM beam.

Development of Leonidas began in 2022, and its latest iteration, as demonstrated in the video above, offers “more than double the operational range and lethality” than the first models.

After the successful drone-disrupting showcase earlier this month, Andy Lowery, Epirus CEO, was quick to claim that his firm had reached a “watershed moment.”

Furthermore, the demo showed that “Leonidas is the only mission-capable, counter-swarm solution for the one-to-many fight,” asserted Lowery.

He underlined his sentiment with the fact that attendees had witnessed “61 drones went up—and 61 went down.”

Ahead of the big headline-grabbing finale, Epirus demonstrated various tactical technologies, such as multi-angle counter-swarm engagement, which tackles two groups of drones coming in from opposite directions.

In an audience participation segment, the Leonidas system was also used to selectively target airborne drones, while leaving non-selected drones unharmed.

Leonidas was even used to take down a drone and ensure it dropped into a “software-defined, pre-identified safe zone.” How tidy.

The Camp Atterbury, Indiana, demonstration was attended by representatives from throughout the U.S. Department of Defense, other U.S. Government agencies, and nine unnamed allied countries.

Indeed, we are now witnessing the increasing importance of drones in modern warfare on a daily basis.

Judge rules that drone maker DJI is affiliated with China’s defense industry — company to stay on Pentagon’s list of Chinese military companies

DJI, the biggest commercial and consumer drone manufacturer in the world, lost its case against the Federal Government after U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman ruled against the company.

According to the South China Morning Post, the court agreed with the Department of Defense, stating that it had sufficient evidence to include the drone maker in the Section 1260H list, which designates certain institutions as “Chinese military companies.”

The company was first added to the Pentagon’s list in 2022, and it sued the federal government over this designation last year.

DJI claims that it’s neither owned nor controlled by the Chinese military, and that it has “lost business deals, been stigmatized as a national security threat, and been banned from contracting with multiple federal government agencies.”

Despite this loss, it said that it will continue operating in the U.S. and explore other legal remedies.

“While DJI is pleased that the court agreed with DJI and rejected most of DoD’s purported justifications for listing DJI, we are disappointed that the court nonetheless upheld the listing,” a company spokesperson said in response to the ruling.

“This decision was based on a single rationale that applies to many companies that have never been listed.”

Although being included in the list is not an outright ban, it makes doing business more difficult in the U.S. and could even lead to further, more drastic actions.

In fact, the company narrowly escaped a proposed law that would have prohibited its sales within the United States. However, it must still undergo a security review in 2025 to prove that its products aren’t a national security risk.

DJI has been facing these challenges due to its market dominance and its Chinese origin.

Despite not creating military drones, lawmakers are concerned that, due to the ubiquity of its products in the American market, Beijing could force it to insert a backdoor in its products.

This would allow the U.S.’s main rival unfettered access to its secrets, especially for drones used by the civilian government.

China-based DJI isn’t the only company that has challenged the U.S. government over its designation as a Chinese military company.

Hesai Group, which manufactures Lidar components for vehicles, also sued the DoD, with the same judge ruling against the company in mid-2025. It has since appealed the decision and is waiting for word from a higher court.

Marcus Hale Identified as Shooter in Grand Blanc Church Attack

Marcus Hale, a 42-year-old Grand Blanc resident and former Army veteran, has been officially identified as the gunman in the deadly LDS church shooting in Grand Blanc, Michigan. The attack, which occurred around 10:45 a.m. ET on September 28, 2025, left two people dead and six injured, including children. Authorities say Hale drove a vehicle into the church, opened fire with an assault-style rifle, and then ignited a flammable accelerant, causing a massive blaze inside the building.

Hale was neutralized on-site by an off-duty police officer who had been attending the service. Officials have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.

Yorkshire resident spots mysterious collection of ghostly UFOs near Leeds – including one that looks like a SPOON

Yorkshire may be swiftly becoming Britain's 'UFO' hotspot.

Several remarkable new photos reveal a flurry of so-called 'unidentified flying objects' in Headingley in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Local resident and photographer Jesse Gallagher snapped the strange collection of unearthly bodies over several months using his iPhone.

The snaps, shared exclusively with the Daily Mail, were all taken after dark around midnight, making their ghostly light easier for the camera to detect.

And they certainly form an eerie motely crew of strange shapes and sizes, several deviating a lot from traditional depictions of a UFO.

'When zooming in, the orbs are either white or multi-coloured and can be seen pulsating,' Mr Gallagher told the Daily Mail.

'One recording has the moon as a backdrop which provides some interesting perspective. 'I have seen other videos of similar objects around the world.'

Mr Gallagher said his footage was captured around midnight in Headingley between August 2021 and November 2023.

Bizarrely, one of the UFOs with a ghostly slivery-blue tint resembles a spoon or a spade – with a narrow stream of light connecting a fainter circle.

Another entity in an even deeper shade of blue seems to form a very rough sphere or orb and be emitting a faint beams of light.

Meanwhile, the third snap shows a bright white ball of brilliant light, almost perfectly circular, with the moon as a tiny blob in the background.

But perhaps most intriguing photo shows a textured grey object with an unusual level of detail – a possible cone or horn, with what seems to be a hole in the middle.

Clues from its appearance suggest it could be a discarded piece of machinery or a fragment of disused spacecraft.

But, in such an instance, rules of physics surely dictate that it would hit the ground.

Philip Mantle, a British UFO researcher, said the images show some kind of 'distant light source that is out of focus'.

'The out of focus image makes the light look very different from what the naked eye would see,' he told the Daily Mail.

'They could well be simple lens flares as seen in the photo of the moon.'

But Mr Mantle stopped short of calling them 'UFOs' – a term that may or may not describe an object thought to have an extraterrestrial origin.

Only last week, another Yorkshire resident revealed photos of a bizarre saucer-shaped object just outside of Skipton.

John Tunnah took about 10 or 12 photographs from his vantage point near the hills, but the object only appeared in one of them.

The object is remarkably similar to the classic UFO saucer shape depicted in popular culture, with a distinctive round and elongated shape.

Nick Pope, a UFO expert formerly with the UK's Ministry of Defence, offered a number of explanations for Mr Tunnah's photo.

'When photos show an anomaly that wasn't seen at the time, I suspect either a glitch with the camera, or a fast-moving object like a bird or an insect, close to the lens,' Mr Pope told the Daily Mail.

UFOs became a major subject of interest after World War II and were thought by some researchers to be intelligent extraterrestrial life visiting Earth.

In the US, the government's Department of Defense, commonly known as the Pentagon, now refrains from using the term UFO at all.

This is largely because it is commonly associated with wind up conspiracy theories and paranoia.

Instead, the Pentagon uses UAP – 'unidentified aerial phenomenon' – although in most places this has low usage and is yet to enter common parlance.

States Sue HHS Over Order To Remove 'Gender Identity' In K-12 Sex Education

A coalition of 16 states and the District of Columbia is suing the Trump administration to keep materials they say “recognize and affirm gender identity” in their federally funded K-12 sex education programs.

The lawsuit, filed Friday in the U.S. District Court in Oregon, is co-led by the attorneys general of Minnesota, Oregon, and Washington.

At issue is an order from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that prohibits what it calls “gender ideology” in lessons supported by two federal grants: the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) and the Title V Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) program. Both are used to teach teenagers about preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Citing President Donald Trump’s order that no federal dollar should go into indoctrinating children in “radical, anti-American ideologies,” the HHS in August demanded that 46 states and territories remove references to gender identity from teaching materials or risk penalties, including the suspension or termination of funding. The deadline for them to comply with the conditions is Oct. 27.

“Federal funds will not be used to poison the minds of the next generation or advance dangerous ideological agendas,” Andrew Gradison, acting assistant secretary for HHS’s Administration for Children and Families, said at that time. “The Trump Administration will ensure that PREP reflects the intent of Congress, not the priorities of the left.”

The suing coalition argued that the order violated Congress’s spending power, and that terminating the funding through these programs will result in a loss of at least $35 million and will “harm the very populations Congress intended to help.” The coalition members also argued that compliance would conflict with their own laws and policies requiring “inclusive” sex education curricula.

For example, Washington’s K-12 health standards on “self-identity” outline how kindergarteners should “understand there are many ways to express gender.” Oregon similarly requires teachers to use “inclusive materials, language, and strategies that [recognize] different sexual orientations, gender identities and gender expression.”
