Donald Trump has backed Tony Blair’s plan to end the war in Gaza.
The US president has given the former British prime minister two weeks to garner support for his proposal.
The project by the Tony Blair Institute (TBI) proposes establishing a temporary body to rule Gaza, with no displacement of civilians, and a multinational effort to prevent the resurgence of Hamas.
Sir Tony has been working on a post-war plan – known as the “day after” – since the conflict broke out in October 2023.
The US president has suggested turning Gaza into the “Riviera of the Middle East” – a glitzy paradise complete with casinos and beachfront properties.
He has also spoken about moving thousands of Palestinians from the war-torn territory, but sources confirmed to The Telegraph that Sir Tony’s plan does not involve the displacement of Gazans.
His plan would see the establishment of a “Property Rights Preservation Unit”, which would aim to strengthen the rights of Gazans who voluntarily leave the territory by giving them a right to return.
If approved, it would also see the creation of a temporary body called the Gaza International Transitional Authority (GITA).
Established by the United Nations, the GITA would rule the post-war strip for several years before handing it over to the Palestinian Authority, which would be expected to undergo significant reforms beforehand.
The GITA would serve as the “supreme political and legal authority for Gaza during the transitional period”, a version of a draft proposal reads, according to The Times of Israel.
It would have at least one Palestinian representative on its board, as well as senior UN officials, leading international figures with business experience, and “strong representation of Muslim members”.
The US president backed Sir Tony’s plan during a meeting at the White House on Aug 27.
Jared Kushner, Mr Trump’s son-in-law, has been front-and-centre in the development of a post-war plan, having commissioned the TBI to work on the proposal.
Sir Tony, meanwhile, has met senior Trump officials and leaders throughout the Middle East to garner support for his plan.
The Telegraph has previously reported that he was advising Steve Witkoff, Mr Trump’s Middle East envoy.
Sir Tony played a significant role as British prime minister during the negotiations that led to the 1998 Good Friday Agreement, the peace accord that ended the Troubles in Northern Ireland.
Mr Trump was particularly keen for Sir Tony to secure the support of Saudi Arabia, as he views the country as crucial to the outcome of any post-war plan.
Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia’s crown prince, wants any post-war plan to lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state, something Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli prime minister, categorically rejects.
Israel has also publicly rejected the Palestinian Authority having any role in governing Gaza but has engaged “constructively” with Sir Tony’s plan, The Times of Israel reported.
Bezalel Smotrich, Israel’s hard-Right finance minister, said on Wednesday that Gaza had the potential to be a real estate “bonanza” and claimed he was in talks with US officials on how to divide up the war-torn territory.
This vision for Gaza was depicted in a bizarre AI video Mr Trump shared in February.
Officials close to the former prime minister believe Israel’s recent strike targeting Hamas leaders in Qatar may have undermined Sir Tony’s work.
The Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday that Mr Trump was “frustrated” with Mr Netanyahu over the strike, which the president reportedly learned about 50 minutes in advance.
“He’s f-- me,” Mr Trump reportedly said as Mr Netanyahu opted for more military action in the Middle East, rather than a ceasefire.
Israel has also since launched a renewed ground offensive in Gaza City, sending thousands of soldiers to defeat the remaining Hamas fighters.
Sir Tony’s plan calls for the disarmament of Hamas, which is in line with the United States’s desires for the terror group.
The proposal also envisages the formation of an international force that would back Gaza’s civil police force in preventing Hamas from re-emerging as an armed group.
The TBI declined to comment.
