Russia's transportation minister found dead in what officials say was an apparent suicide

MOSCOW (AP) — Russian's transport minister was found dead from a gunshot wound in an apparent suicide, investigators said Monday — news that broke hours after the Kremlin announced he had been dismissed by President Vladimir Putin.

The Kremlin did not give a reason for the firing of Roman Starovoit, who served as transport minister since May 2024, and it was unclear when exactly he died and whether it was related to an alleged embezzlement case, as some Russian media suggested.

Russia’s Investigative Committee, the top criminal investigation agency, said the body of Starovoit, 53, was found with a gunshot wound in his car parked in Odintsovo, a neighborhood just west of the capital where members of Russia's elite live. A gun previously presented to him as an official gift was found next to his body.

A criminal probe was launched into the death, and investigators saw suicide as the most likely cause, according to committee's spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko, who did not say when Starovoit died.

Russian media have reported that Starovoit's dismissal could have been linked to an investigation into the embezzlement of state funds allocated for building fortifications in the Kursk region, where he served as governor before being appointed transportation minister.

The alleged embezzlement has been cited as one of the reasons for deficiencies in Russia's defensive lines that failed to stem a surprise Ukrainian incursion in the region launched in August 2024. In the stunning attack, Ukraine's battle-hardened mechanized units quickly overwhelmed lightly armed Russian border guards and inexperienced army conscripts. Hundreds were taken prisoner.

The incursion was a humiliating blow to the Kremlin — the first time the country’s territory was occupied by an invader since World War II.

The Russian military had announced its troops had fully reclaimed the border territory in April — nearly nine months after losing chunks of the region.

Starovoit's successor as Kursk governor, Alexei Smirnov, stepped down in December and was arrested on embezzlement charges in April. Some Russian media have alleged that Starovoit also could have faced charges as part of the investigation.

His dismissal also followed a weekend of travel chaos as Russian airports were forced to ground hundreds of flights due to Ukrainian drone attacks. Most commentators said, however, that the air traffic disruptions have become customary amid frequent Ukrainian drone raids and were unlikely to have triggered his dismissal.

An official order releasing Starovoit from his post was published on the Kremlin’s website Monday morning without giving a reason for his dismissal.

Shortly before the news of Starovoit's death broke, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov refused to comment on the reasons behind his dismissal.

Peskov praised Starovoit’s replacement, Andrei Nikitin, who had been appointed deputy transport minister five months ago.

The MAGA movement erupted in disbelief Monday after top administration officials said convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein had not blackmailed elite figures, kept a "client list" or was murdered in prison.

Why it matters: MAGA's fundamental distrust of the "deep state" sparked years of conspiracy theories over Epstein's suicide in prison while facing federal sex trafficking charges. Now, even declarations from movement stalwarts like Kash Patel and Dan Bongino, the top two officials at the FBI, are not enough to placate adherents.

What they're saying: Social media lit up with posts casting doubt on the findings Sunday and Monday, even questioning the integrity of Patel, Bongino and Attorney General Pam Bondi, who were either longstanding allies of President Trump or prominent figures in MAGA media themselves before entering the administration.

"As trusted voices like @FBIDDBongino, @FBIDirectorKash, and @AGPamBondi align with the official story, many are asking: Who's still willing to demand real answers?" LindellTV, the outlet helmed by Trump ally Mike Lindell, posted on X.

"Assuming this leaked Epstein Files memo is true, then we all know this is a shameful coverup to protect the most heinous elites," added influencer Rogan O'Handley, who goes by DC Draino.

Zoom out: Axios first reported Sunday that the Justice Department and FBI had written a memo saying they found no evidence Epstein had killed himself, kept a "client list" or extorted powerful figures.

The administration also released video from the hours before Epstein's death showing that nobody else had entered his cell.

The memo said nobody else involved in the Epstein case will be charged and that the administration would not release any material in its possession detailing child sexual abuse or information on Epstein's victims.

Between the lines: Patel and Bongino were both prominent purveyors of conspiracy theories around Epstein's death as influencers prior to Trump's inauguration.

On the 20th anniversary of 7/7, the effects of the Islamist attacks still linger — in the memories of survivors, in the grief of victims’ families, and on the city itself

The morning of July 7, 2005, began like any other. Commuters streamed onto the Underground, clutching briefcases and newspapers, jostling for space on packed platforms. Above ground, red double-decker buses weaved through the city’s streets, collecting passengers.

But at 8.50am, the familiar rhythm of a Thursday morning was shattered. In an instant, three explosions tore through the Underground network. Silence was replaced by screaming, as smoke and flames filled the tunnels and carriages were plunged into darkness.

Almost an hour later, at 9.47am, a fourth explosion tore the roof off the Number 30 bus stationed in Tavistock Square, scattering debris across the street.

What began as a day of routine ended as a day of horror. Four men, carrying homemade explosives, had boarded London’s public transport system and carried out the deadliest single act of terrorism in the UK.

Fifty-two people were killed in the attacks as well as the bombers, and more than 700 people were injured.

Twenty years on, the effects of that day still linger — in the memories of survivors, in the grief of victims’ families, and in the fabric of the city itself.

Survivor Mustafa Kurtuldu, then 24, was on his way to the Home Office to take part in an event celebrating a government project called the Russell Commission — encouraging young people into volunteering — when he was caught up in the blast.

At Liverpool Street Station, he boarded the Circle line. Headphones in and just a carriage away from the blast’s epicentre.

Halfway through the tunnel heading towards Aldgate, Mustafa recalled a loud popping sound, like stepping on a juice carton, and then sudden darkness.

The art student waited 45 minutes to be rescued from the train by emergency services. He heard screams, saw people on the track, and was overwhelmed by awful smells.

Staggering out of the station alongside other survivors, he was taken to the hospital in a commandeered bus.

“I still have manic episodes where I break down. My kids have become accustomed to knowing when I zone out,” he told the Standard.

“You don’t get over something like that, you just get used to it. It’s kind of like scar tissue.

“The Netflix documentary has just come out and I watched it this morning and I just stopped. I just broke down and I wasn’t expecting that to happen, it’s been 20 years, but watching the footage of what happened that day again…suddenly all of those memories come back like an avalanche of emotion.”

As a British Muslim, Mustafa recalls the day of the attack differently to many others.

“When police were taking everyone’s name and when they asked for my name they stopped me and searched my bag as soon as they found out what my name was,” he said.

“Then, outside the station, they searched me again. I remember that quite vividly.”

Mustafa explained that he never felt able to process the events solely as a victim. Instead, he often felt pressured to condemn the attack or speak on it specifically as a Muslim.

“I’ve had journalists asking me to explain international terrorism ” he said.

“I was attacked on the street at knifepoint for being a Muslim.

“People were angry at me for voicing my opinion, even people close to me were like ‘you need to shut up’ and ‘why don’t you just tell them we’re a religion of peace.’

“It felt like I was never really allowed to be a straight-out victim. I was expected to apologise for what happened.

“When you compare that to interviews with other survivors, they’re all talking about their personal feelings and how they try to come to terms with it.”

Reflecting on the anniversary, Mustafa emphasised the importance of asking deeper, uncomfortable questions about why the attack happened, arguing that only by understanding the true causes can future tragedies be prevented.

He also criticised the political tendency to deflect blame onto groups like Muslims or asylum seekers, instead of addressing systemic issues or taking responsibility for policies that may contribute to radicalisation.

Martin Byrne, then 24, was working as a civil engineer for Transport for London when he was called to King’s Cross to deal with an emergency on July 7, 2005.

Under the impression he was responding to a power failure, Martin soon realised the situation was a lot more serious than he first thought.

“When I got down to Kings Cross, I was really surprised actually at how little control there appeared to be. All the passengers had evacuated the whole area.

“I walked around the station trying to find someone in charge and then I found a policeman at the top of the escalators. I introduced myself and asked what was going on and then some other people turned up.

“About five minutes later an emergency responder came up the escalator asking for blankets and we thought ‘God it’s the middle of the summer’.

“And then he said ‘no, they’re to cover the bodies’. We asked ‘how many do you need?’ and he said ‘bring as many as you can’.

“That’s when we realised this was deadly serious.

“A victim I saw was being stretchered up the stairwell and he had on a dark pinstriped suit and he’d lost a leg. He was in a really bad way and was unconscious.

“That was the confirmation we needed that we were dealing with something that none of us were really prepared for.”

Martin praised the team of engineers and station staff who worked tirelessly for several hours in the dark to assist the walking wounded—fetching blankets, moving water supplies, and carrying victims to waiting ambulances.

He acknowledged the extraordinary human effort, noting how engineers and staff went far beyond their duties—pulling people from trains and doing everything possible to ensure victims received the help they needed.

“Very few people have ever been faced with those kind of images,” Martin said.

“There were some people who were very noisy and those who were very quiet and it’s the quiet people that really needed the help, the ones who were slipping away.

“After that I just walked back to my office and that felt quite surreal. It was only a ten-minute walk, but I had other people’s blood on me and I just walked back and sat at my desk.

“There were some people at the office that still didn’t know what had happened.”

That night, Martin and his team were dispatched to inspect the tunnels at Edgware Road, where they were confronted with the harrowing aftermath of the day’s events.

“Nothing had been cleaned at that point. There was mess inside and outside of the train and obviously there was this big gaping hole in the top,” he said.

Martin’s job was to locate the blast site and to assess the damage caused to the tunnel.

“Maybe it's a testament to the train, or maybe the Victorian tunnel, but the tunnel was really not damaged,” he said.

“There were scorch marks along the tunnel where the train had opened up like a burst can and the metal had scraped along the brickwork, but the tunnel was fine.”

Large scaffolding systems were delivered and stored near the site, and streets were sealed off as teams worked throughout the following week to recover the train, which had to be removed with a large crane.

As the crane was extremely large and heavy, the road had to be dug up and reinforced before it could be brought in.

Once the groundwork was complete, the damaged carriage was moved into the station, lifted onto a flatbed, carefully wrapped and transported by road to its destination.

Reflecting on his role, Martin said: ”I’d only been in the underground for four years, but at that point it was difficult to think anything other than we just need to get on with it.

“In hindsight, to have that experience at the start of my career, it taught me how to deal with emergency situations. I’m a manager now and I can pass on that experience to my team.”

Martin said he still thinks about 7/7 often, as it shaped the way he approaches his work.

He admitted there are a dozen vivid images from that day that play on repeat in his mind.

In many ways, London swiftly returned to normal after the 7/7 bombings.

The Tube resumed 85% of its operations the very next day. While some services remained disrupted, many Underground stations and bus routes were back in service relatively quickly.

Though fear and anxiety lingered in the aftermath, the response from the public and emergency services—both on the day and in the days that followed — was a powerful display of London’s resilience and defiance in the face of terrorism.

Commemorating 7/7 continues to send a collective message of unity, courage, and solidarity in the face of fear and violence.

A memorial service to mark the 20th anniversary of the 7/7 bombings will take place on Monday at 11.30am.

Judge rules Abrego wrongful deportation challenge must proceed

GREENBELT, Maryland (Reuters) -A U.S. judge on Monday ruled that Kilmar Abrego’s legal challenge to his wrongful deportation to El Salvador will continue despite the Trump administration’s decision to bring him back to the United States to face criminal charges.

U.S. District Judge Paula Xinis in Maryland found that there were ongoing issues to resolve in the case, including whether the Trump administration had fully complied with prior orders to facilitate Abrego’s return and allow his immigration case to be handled as though he had not been improperly deported.

Lawyers for the Trump administration had argued the case should be moot given Abrego’s return this month to face U.S. charges accusing him of unlawfully transporting migrants living illegally in the United States. Abrego has pleaded not guilty.

Jerome Powell is competing to be the worst Fed chair in history

By stubbornly refusing to lower interest rates despite ample data urging him to do so,Fed Chairman Jerome Powell is committing his third major policy blunder in six years.If he continues this tight-money path through the July 29 Fed meeting, “Too Late” Powell will go down as the worst Fed chair in history.

It’s not like Powell lacks stiff competition. In the 1970s, to boost Richard Nixon’s re-election run, uber partisanArthur Burns kept rates too low for too long, triggering a dizzying inflation spiral and a decade-long stagflation. In the 1990s,Alan Greenspan severely underestimated productivity gainsfrom the tech boom, over-estimated inflationary pressures, and needlessly hiked rates — six times between June 1999 and May 2000. This spiked the federal funds rate to 6.5 percent, triggering the dot-com market crash and 2001 recession.

A whiplashed Greenspan then slashed rates to rock-bottom levels and held them at 1 percent for a full year — from June 2003 to June 2004 — well beyond what the recovery warranted. This ultra-cheap money fueled reckless lending, a massive housing bubble, and ultimately detonated the 2007–2008 financial collapse.

Greenspan’s successor,Ben Bernanke, should have seen it coming. But the Princeton donfailed to grasp rising systemic risk in mortgage markets. His paralysis turned what might have been a contained correction into a full-blown global financial crisis — only intervening after Lehman Brothers fell, when it was already too late.

Now enters JayPowell. Even though he leads the world’s largest economy, he is a lawyer, not an economist— an anomaly among Fed chairs. Since Arthur Burns,every Fed chair has held an economics degree, except for G. William Miller and Powell. Miller was similarly unqualified and endured one of the most disastrous Fed tenures in recent memory spanning just 517 days before being replaced by the esteemedPaul Volckeron August 6, 1979.

Powell’s audition for “worst Fed chair” beganshortly after his February 2018 appointment. Promising President Trump in the Oval Office a supportive posture to secure his nomination, Powell instead aggressively raised rates into the low-inflation, high-growth Trump economy.

Powell wrongly believed Trump’s tax cuts and tariffs would spark inflation— they didn’t. Nor did Powell understand that Trump’s efforts to deregulate the economy and reach energy independence — positive “supply shocks” in the macroeconomics vernacular — would provide positive deflationary benefits.

As Powell’s Fed hiked interest rates four times in 2018—despite muted inflation and strong labor market gains — economic momentum slowed sharply. According to the Fed’s own September Tealbook,most of the expected GDP slowdown — from over 3 percent to 1.5 percent — was due to Powell’s blunder.

Trump was justifiably outraged over Powell’s first blunder. It would cost the American economy hundreds of thousands of jobs and hundreds of billions of dollars in lost economic output and tax revenues.

After Trump left the White House in January 2021, Powell successfully lobbiedJoe Bidenfor a second term. Throughout that year,the Powell-led Fed kept interest rates near zero, even as inflation surged past 5 percent by mid-year.

By then, the damage was done. The Fed was forced into one of the most aggressive tightening cycles in history —11 hikes in 12 months — all to combat the inflation that Powell’s inaction had helped unleash.

Powell’s second major blunder here wasn’t just his late policy;it was his silent permissiveness. While a Democrat-controlled Congress passed over $2 trillion in unneeded and wasteful spending bills — in no small part to boost the Biden reelection campaign — Powell failed in his ethical duty to warn== the White House and Democrat-controlled Congress that this spending would worsen inflation. Instead, he let loose monetary policy and partisan fiscal profligacy collide, accelerating the very inflation he would soon be forced to chase.

Today, with inflation returning to target and disinflation gaining traction,Powell is well on his way to his third blunderwith his stubborn refusal to lower interest rates now. Powell seems incapable of recognizing that Trumponomics — driven by pro-growth deregulation, productivity-enhancing tax cuts, strategic tariffs, and America First supply chain policies — is again delivering strong GDP growth and low unemployment without fueling inflation, just as in Trump’s prosperous first term.

Powell’s misguided fixation on so-called tariff “uncertainties” as a rationale for “prudently” holding rates steady is particularly imprudent. Let’s remember clearly: during President Trump’s first term, we imposed tariffs strategically and aggressively — and the predicted inflation never materialized. Powell’s hesitation reflects a failure to learn from recent economic history, needlessly stifling growth, undermining American competitiveness, and harming millions of Americans.

At its next meeting July 29-30, the Fed must immediately begin cutting rates. If Powell won’t adjust course, he will indeed have earned the sobriquet of worst Fed chair.

Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene battered the southeastern US in late 2024.

After making landfall in Florida, it traveled up the coast through Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding demolished homes and submerged vehicles.

Amid the search and rescue efforts, the US Department of Transportation shared an X post asking consumer drone operators to stay clear. At the time, the Federal Aviation Administration had issued a temporary flight restriction in certain areas.

"Do not fly your drone near or around rescue and recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene," the agency said. "Interfering with emergency response operations impacts search and rescue operations on the ground."

The FAADroneZone, the agency's site for drone services, said in a separate X post that "interfering with emergency response efforts may result in fines or criminal prosecution."

At the time, some online observers thought volunteer drone operators were being barred from assisting in relief efforts, which sparked a backlash.

The DOT later clarified that the FAA didn't ban consumer drones from providing assistance and relief.

"These restrictions occur at the request of local authorities or law enforcement. FAA does not put these into place without requests," a spokesperson told Fox News.

The agency added that "anyone looking to use a drone or other aircraft to assist in Hurricane Helene disaster relief and recovery efforts should coordinate with first responders and law enforcement on scene to ensure they do not disrupt life-saving operations."

Los Angeles wildfires

In January, a series of wildfires erupted across the Los Angeles region, causing widespread damage and forcing hundreds of thousands to evacuate their homes.

In addition to emergency firefighting efforts on the ground, officials deployed two Super Scoopers, which are amphibious aircraft that collect water to drop on wildfires.

An unauthorized civilian drone struck one Super Scooper, forcing it out of service.

"We would like to remind everyone that flying a drone in the midst of firefighting efforts is a federal crime and punishable by up to 12 months in prison or a fine of up to $75,000," a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson said at the time.

The incident prompted an investigation by the FAA, which said in a statement that "flying a drone near a wildfire is dangerous and can cost lives."

The Department of Justice said the drone operator agreed to plead guilty to one count of unsafe operation of an uncrewed aircraft.

The plea agreement included the drone operator paying full restitution to the Government of Quebec, which supplied the aircraft, and completing 150 hours of community service.
