Lip reader reveals Trump’s alleged Vatican demand to Macron

The French president was sidelined during a meeting in Saint Peter’s Basilica, according to video footage

US President DonaldTrump allegedly told his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, to step aside before having a one-on-one conversation with Ukraine’s VladimirZelensky, according to a professional lip reader cited by British media.

The impromptu meeting took place on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral on Saturday. Footage from the Vatican showed Zelensky walking toward the seating area with Trump, glancing back several times, seemingly expecting the French leader to join. Three chairs were set up, suggesting plans for a three-way discussion.

The brief meeting in Vatican marked the first face-to-face encounter between Trump and Zelensky since their clash at the White House in February. Their discussion took place as the US president has been pressing Kiev to accept what the media described as his “final offer” to end hostilities. According to reports, Washington has proposed freezing the conflict along the current front lines and recognizing Crimea as part of Russia — something Zelensky has repeatedly rejected.

While Trump is eager to secure a ceasefire as soon as possible in order to deliver on his campaign promise,Macron has consistently insistedthat any peace dealmust guarantee Ukraine’s “sovereignty and territorial integrity,”contributing to rising tensions between Washington and Paris.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has declared a temporary ceasefire in Ukraine to time with its "Victory Day" commemorations marking 80 years since the defeat of the Nazis and the end of World War II.

The Kremlin said the truce is "based on humanitarian considerations" and will last from the passing of midnight on May 7 into May 8, until the passing of midnight on May 10 into May 11.

"For this period, all hostilities are stopped," said the statement. "Russia believes that the Ukrainian side should follow suit. In the event of violations of the ceasefire by the Ukrainian side, the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation will give an adequate and effective response."

Newsweek reached out to the State Department and Ukraine's presidential office for comment.

Moderna risks UK suspension over cash and toys offered to kids – media

A British watchdog has criticized the biotech firm =over recruitment practices involving children in coronavirus booster studies==

US ’big pharma’ company Moderna could be suspended or expelled from a UK trade body after breaches of industry rules, including offering children cash and teddy bears to take part in Covid vaccine trials, The Telegraph has reported.

Moderna, which joined the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) in 2023, now faces an audit that could result in its suspension or expulsion. A new ruling is expected to be published in the coming days, according to The Telegraph. If sanctioned, it would become the tenth firm to face suspension from the ABPI in the past 40 years, the newspaper wrote.

The UK’s drug watchdog, the Prescription Medicines Code of Practice Authority (PMCPA), saidModerna’s lack of transparency was "unacceptable" and damaged the industry’s reputation.

In October 2024, Moderna was fined £14,000 ($17,850) after a WhatsApp message offered £1,500 ($1,872) to minors to join the NextCOVE Covid booster trial. Although the company later reduced the payment to £185 ($231), at least one site continued promoting the original offer.The PMCPA said the payment was “much higher than would be considered a reasonable reimbursement” and ruled that it discredited the pharmaceutical industry.

In a separate case, Moderna was fined nearly £44,000 ($56,000)after Britain’s pharmaceutical watchdog found it had damaged the industry’s reputation. In 2023, Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust published adverts aimed at children aged 12 and over, offering “a lovely certificate and a ‘be part of the research’ teddy bear.” Two online articles also promoted recruitment. (Honest to God $56,000 is not a penalty.)

A senior Moderna employee co-authored promotional articles,including one with former vaccines minister Nadhim Zahawi, without disclosing his affiliation, the Telegraph reported. The employee also sent promotional tweets without revealing his role.

The PMCPA said Moderna “misled regulators”about when it learned of the breaches. While the company claimed it acted promptly after being informed in January 2024, evidence showed executives had been alerted by UsForThem in August 2023.

The findings showed “how readily [Moderna] put profit ahead of the health and safety of children”and “laid bare just how little regard it hashad for the regulatory system that was supposed to keep it honest,” Molly Kingsley, founder of UsForThem, told the newspaper.

COVID-19 vaccines,including Moderna’s Spikevax, may lead to side effects in minors, such as pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache, fever, and, in rare cases, myocarditis or pericarditis, according to health authorities.

'Frustrated' Trump Wants Putin to Go Further

President Donald Trump is "increasingly frustrated" by the leaders of Ukraine and Russia, and wants Russian President Vladimir Putin to go further than his declaration of a temporary ceasefire, the White House said.

Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary, noted Putin's statement on Monday morning to announce a forthcoming truce, after Trump had offered two rare direct criticisms of the Russian leader in recent days.

"The president has made it clear he wants to see a permanent ceasefire first, to stop the killings, stop the bloodshed," Leavitt told a White House press briefing.

"And while he remains optimistic he can strike a deal, he's also being realistic as well. Both leaders need to come to the table to negotiate their way out of this."

The Kremlin declared a truce from midnight into May 8 until midnight on May 10 to coincide with Russia's "Victory Day" celebrations marking 80 years since the end of World War II and the defeat of the Nazis. It urged Ukraine to follow suit.

Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's foreign minister, responded with a repeat of Kyiv's demand for an immediate ceasefire.

"If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately," Sybiha posted on X.

"Why wait until May 8th? If the fire can be ceased now and since any date for 30 days—so it is real, not just for a parade. Ukraine is ready to support a lasting, durable, and full ceasefire. And this is what we are constantly proposing, for at least 30 days."

Trump claims Zelensky ready to ‘give up’ Crimea

US President Donald Trump has said he believes Ukraine’s Vladimir Zelensky has come to terms with the need to recognize Crimea as part of Russia in order to achieve peace with Moscow.

Zelensky has repeatedly insisted he would never formally recognize Moscow’s control over Crimea, which became part of Russia in 2014 afollowing a referendum held in the aftermath of a bloody Western-backed armed coup in Kiev.

Trump, who met with the Ukrainian leader on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral at the Vatican on Saturday,was asked by journalists aboard Air Force One on Sunday if Zelensky was now prepared to “give up” the peninsula.

”Oh, I think so, yeah,”the US president replied.

Trump said the tone of his latest exchange with Zelensky was markedly different compared to the “little dispute” they had at the Oval Office in February.

Back then, the Ukrainian leader’s meeting with Trump and US Vice President J.D. Vance turned into a shouting match in front of the cameras and led to Zelensky’s visit to the White House being cut short.

”I see him [Zelensky] as calmer. I think he understands the picture. And I think he wants to make a deal. I do not know if he wanted to make a deal [before]. I think he wants to make a deal,”the president stated.

Trump said Zelensky had told him “that he needs more weapons, but he has been saying that for three years.” The US president noted that Kiev is in a “very tough situation” and is fighting “a much bigger force.”

He also called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to “stop shooting, sit down and sign a deal” to end the fighting.

Moscow has said on numerous occasions that it is ready to begin talks with Kiev without any preconditions. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov noted on Monday that so far Russia is not seeing any steps from Ukraine that would signal its eagerness to start negotiating.

Russian officials have emphasized that any viable long-term settlement must address the root causes of the conflict and reflect the territorial realities on the ground, including Moscow’s control of Crimea as well as of the People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk and Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.

Crypto csar David Sacks has refuted Vladimir Zelensky’s claim that Ukraine is fighting on behalf of Americans

The White House crypto csar has rejected the notion that Ukraine is aiding the United States against its enemies by fighting Russia.

Kiev has consistently asserted that it is “defending” Western nations from Russia. Vladimir Zelensky reiterated the point in a recent interview with conservative journalist Ben Shapiro,where he urged the US to act as an arms supplier rather than a diplomatic mediator and stating that Ukrainians “are fighting against your enemies, the Russians.”

“Russians are not our enemy. Sacks has long criticized US support for Kiev, characterizing it as an attempt to transform the Ukraine conflict into a “forever war.”

White House displays yard signs of the 100 'worst illegal immigrant criminals' arrested in Trump's first 100 days

The White House lawn is lined with posters of 100 of the "worst illegal immigrant criminals" arrested in the first 100 days of President Donald Trump's second term.

"Good Morning from The White House!" White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt wrote on X on Monday morning, sharing video of the posters, which say "arrested" at the top and appear to have a mugshot or other photo of the person followed by the label "illegal alien."

The bottom of the poster lists a crime the person is accused of committing, including rape, murder, sexual assault of a child, lewd acts in front of a child, and distribution of fentanyl and illegal guns.

"We will hunt you down. You will face justice. You will be deported — and you will never set foot on American soil again," the White House wrote in a separate X post. "Oh, and your mugshot may just end up on a yard sign at the White House."

Leavitt and Border Czar Tom Homan hosted an early morning press briefing Monday. Homan alleged that former President Joe Biden "unsecured the border on purpose."

"I started the Border Patrol in 1984. I've been at this for over 40 years. I worked for six presidents, starting with Ronald Reagan. Every president I ever worked for took more security seriously. Because you can't have national security if you don't have strong border security," Homan told reporters. "Even President Obama and President Clinton took some steps to secure the border. They understood national security was important."

"Joe Biden was the first president in the history of this nation who came in office and unsecured the border on purpose. That's just a fact," Homan said.

The White House also released a list and photos of all 100 illegal immigrants featured on the yard signs, highlighting several higher-profile cases.

There's a poster of Jose Enrique Pol Troncoso, a 31-year-old Dominican national arrested earlier this month by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Miami. He was convicted of fentanyl possession and carrying a concealed weapon. His criminal histo also includes cocaine and heroin possession and stalking in Orange County, Florida, according to the White House.

Last month, ICE Houston arrested 66-year-old Guatemalan national Norberto Che Xol, whose photo is also featured at the White House Monday. He was convicted of indecent sexual contact with a child in Harris County, Texas.

The White House is also displaying the image of Virginia Basora Gonzalez – a Dominican woman previously deported for fentanyl trafficking who broke down in tears when she was arrested by federal agents again in Philadelphia last month. Gonzalez had a final order of removal dated March 4, 2020. Her criminal history includes a conviction for attempted possession with intent to distribute 40 grams or more of fentanyl in Philadelphia, according to the White House.

ICE Denver arrested 65-year-old Mexican national Francisco Schraidt-Rodriguez, who was convicted of fentanyl distribution in Baja California. His photo is now on the White House lawn.

As is a photo of 55-year-old Honduran national Hector Rolando Valle, who was convicted of performing lewd acts in front of a minor in Oklahoma and sentenced to five years in prison. ICE Philadelphia arrested Valle on March 13. He had a final order of removal dated May 2, 2022.

ICE St. Louis arrested 40-year-old Mexican national Giovanni Rafael Falcon Gomez "pursuant to a federal indictment for coercion and enticement of a minor and transfer of obscene material to a minor," according to the White House. ICE Detroit arrested 27-year-old Bhutanian national Birkha Sarki, who was convicted of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor in Columbus, Ohio, was sentenced to five years in prison and had a final order of removal dated Aug. 6, 2024. Their photos are now on display.

Just days after Trump's inauguration, ICE Seattle arrested Honduran national Kevin Adith Torres-Velasquez on Jan. 24 for the possession of approximately 10 kilograms of a mixture of cocaine and fentanyl as well as a firearm. According to the White House, he was previously removed from the U.S. in 2005, again in 2008, and in 2017 was deemed an "inadmissible alien." Torres-Velasquez now has his photo on the White House lawn.

A beautiful emission nebula and star cluster, it sails far southern skies within the nautical constellation Carina. Stars from NGC 3572 are toward top center in the telescopic frame that would measure about 100 light-years across at the cluster's estimated distance of 9,000 light-years. The visible interstellar gas and dust, shown in colors of the Hubble palette, is part of the star cluster's natal molecular cloud, itself cataloged as Gum 37. Dense streamers of material within the nebula, eroded by stellar winds and radiation, clearly trail away from the energetic young stars. They are likely sites of ongoing star formation with shapes reminiscent of the Tadpoles of IC 410 – better known to northern skygazers. In the coming tens to hundreds of millions of years, gas and stars in the cluster will be dispersed though, by gravitational tides and by violent supernova explosions that end the short lives of the massive cluster stars.

In the summer of 1969, four astronauts from NASA’s Apollo program traveled to Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve in southern Idaho. Although they were experienced pilots, they weren’t trained geologists.

Their mission was to explore the volcanic terrain, similar to what they would encounter on the Moon, and learn the field geology skills they would need to investigate and collect samples during their lunar missions.

Craters of the Moon shares a striking resemblance to the Moon’s surface, with wide stretches of hardened lava. While most volcanic activity on the Moon ended over a billion years ago, the lava flows in Idaho are relatively recent, between 15,000 and 2,100 years old.

These flows erupted from a network of cracks in the Earth’s crust called the Great Rift, which stretches more than 50 miles (80 kilometers), forming a vast plain of dark basalt rock.

Satellite Views Through the Seasons

Satellite images taken in summer and winter capture the stark beauty of the lava fields of Craters of the Moon. The summer image (above, upper) was taken by the Operational Land Imager (OLI) on Landsat 8 in July 2024, and the winter image (above, lower) by OLI-2 on Landsat 9 in January 2025.

Photos at the bottom of the page show the landscape up close—from the ground in 2024 and in 1969, when astronauts Eugene Cernan and Joe Engle trained there with NASA geologist Ted Foss.

The assemblage of lava flows in the area contains nearly every type of volcanic feature associated with basaltic eruptions. Many, including lava tubes and three distinct types of ropy pahoehoe lava, are too small to be visible at the scale of these images.

A number of cinder cones—conical hills formed when gas-filled magma erupted in fiery fountains—stand out in the snowy winter scene above. These features are usually topped by a prominent crater.

(Note that the craters of Craters of the Moon are volcanic in origin, whereas the round depressions on Earth’s Moon formed when meteoroids, asteroids, and comets struck its surface.)

Lava, Life, and the Harsh Environment

The area’s ecology is closely connected to the volcanic landscape. Lichens are some of the first organisms to colonize new lava flows, and plants gradually find places to grow in the cracks in the lava.

Sagebrush is common in the park, especially where rocks are older and soil is more developed.

Islands of lusher plant life called kipukas are scattered throughout the region, becoming isolated when lava flowed around elevated patches of land. Hundreds exist in the park, ranging in size from less than one acre to tens of thousands of acres.

Larger kipukas may be crisscrossed by roads and altered by other human activity, while smaller ones are relatively undisturbed. These ecological havens contain some of the oldest juniper trees in Idaho and are valuable for long-term scientific study.

Flora, Fauna, and Winter Resilience

The plant and animal life here, in addition to coexisting with lava rock, must also endure long winters. At approximately 6,000 feet (1,800 meters) in elevation, the area can experience cold, snowy conditions from November through March.

From Moon to Mars: A Continuing Legacy

In the decades since the Apollo program, Craters of the Moon has continued to garner interest from scientists for its commonalities not only with the Moon but also with Mars.

Subsequent research programs have used the lava landscape to test instrumentation and advance our planetary exploration capabilities.

In one recent study, researchers pointed out that Craters of the Moon lava tubes support diverse microbial communities and have some structural similarities to lava tubes on Mars.

These Martian features, shielded from less hospitable surface environments, are of particular interest to scientists because of their potential to harbor biological communities.

The first bits of data have come back from the trio of small satellites that make up NASA's EZIE (Electrojet Zeeman Imaging Explorer) mission, which aims to solve some mysteries surrounding the "auroral electrojet" phenomena in our atmosphere.

The "first light" observations are promising, and NASA says the EZIE satellites are "poised to reveal crucial details about Earth's auroral electrojets."

After launching March 14 from California's Vandenberg Space Force Base on SpaceX's Transporter 13 rideshare mission, EZIE's three suitcase-sized cubesats now orbit a few hundred miles above Earth in a string-of-pearls configuration.

"The EZIE team is very excited about these first-light results," Sam Yee of the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory, the mission's principal investigator, said in a statement.

"The observations demonstrate that both the spacecraft and the MEM instrument onboard are working as expected."

MEM, short for Microwave Electrojet Magnetogram, measures a phenomenon called Zeeman splitting.

This method will give NASA researchers insight into the structure and evolution of the electrojets system, which has never been available to scientists before.

Auroral electrojets are intense currents created by the massive energy transferred by the solar wind when it hits Earth's upper atmosphere.

The electrojets push about 1 million amps of electrical charge around Earth's magnetic poles every second.

While they flow some 65 miles (100 kilometers) above the ground, auroral electrojets are responsible for some of Earth's largest magnetic disturbances.

They can also impact the safety of astronauts and cause satellite interference. Understanding these electrojets has been a priority at NASA for a while, and the EZIE mission marks the first time scientists will have the chance to map them up close.

The mission is funded by the Heliophysics Division at NASA Headquarters in Washington and is managed out of Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Next, the team will run final checkouts and calibrations for the three EZIE cubesats. If everything goes well, NASA says the mission will start formal science investigations in a month.

SpaceX launches 250th Starlink satellite mission, lands rocket at sea

SpaceX launched a milestone mission on Sunday night (April 27).

A Falcon 9 rocket carrying 23 of the company's Starlink broadband satellites — including 13 with direct-to-cell capability — lifted off from Florida's Cape Canaveral Space Force Station on Sunday at 10:09 p.m. EDT (0209 GMT on Monday, April 28).

It was the 250th time SpaceX had sent a batch of Starlink craft skyward, the company noted via X shortly after launch.

About eight minutes after liftoff, the Falcon 9's first stage came back to Earth for a vertical touchdown as planned.

It landed on the SpaceX drone ship "Just Read the Instructions," which was stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

It was the 20th liftoff and landing for this particular booster, according to a SpaceX mission description. Thirteen of those flights have been Starlink missions.

The rocket's upper stage did its job, too. It deployed the 23 Starlink satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) about an hour after launch, SpaceX announced in an update on X.

Sunday night's launch was the 48th Falcon 9 flight of 2025, and the 31st dedicated to building out the Starlink megaconstellation.

SpaceX is targeting Monday, April 28 for a Falcon 9 launch of 27 Starlink satellites to low-Earth orbit from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Liftoff is targeted for 1:39 p.m. PT, with backup opportunities available until 5:25 p.m. PT. If needed, additional launch opportunities are also available on Tuesday, April 29 starting at 1:11 p.m. PT.
