MAVNI is a special recruiting program that allows certain immigrants in the U.S. to join the military and gain eligibility for U.S. citizenship without a green card. Learn about the qualifications, benefits, and status of the MAVNI program.

MAVNI stands for Military Accessions Vital to the National Interest, a pilot program that enlists legal non-citizens who have critical foreign language or health care skills. In return, they can apply for U.S. citizenship on an expedited basis.

She signed up for the Army Reserve in MAVNI in December 2015 and is still waiting for her background check. She said she periodically checks with Army Recruiting Command.

In 2016, driven by concerns about terrorism and national security, the Obama administration called for more extensive background checks for MAVNI recruits. While no MAVNI recruit has been charged with terrorism, the MAVNI program virtually ground to a halt under the weight of these new requirements.

That was the only MAVNI "spy" case.

Indeed, the background checks were so slow that the military eventually canceled some enlistments for failure to pass a background check.
