The timing of this document purge comes amid ongoing controversy over what is essentially the shuttering of USAid following the Trump administration’s attempts to reshape the independent agency through the so-called “department of government efficiency” (Doge).

Doge is headed by Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, and he has been tasked with slashing the number of jobs at the federal government and the amount of money it spends. Amid the huge turmoil that has gripped the US government as the Musk-led Doge carries out its activities, USAid has been among the worst-hit government agencies.

The huge cuts at USAid have affected projects across the globe as vast numbers of projects are paused, shuttered or have their funding slashed. There has been widespread outcry at the move from USAid workers but also across the international development sector as they warn of the detrimental impact it will have on some of the world’s most vulnerable populations.

When federal agencies are dissolved or restructured, their records are typically transferred to successor agencies or the National Archives and Records Administration (Nara) in accordance with the Federal Records Act (FRA). During the US’s hasty exit out of Afghanistan in 2021, Nara sent a reminder to safely and lawfully discard sensitive documents.

The US president believes a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine can be achieved

US President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he would likely hold phone talks with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin this week, expressing hope Moscow would agree to a proposed 30-day ceasefire with Ukraine.

Trump made the remarks to reporters shortly after Ukrainian and American delegations met in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, where Kiev agreed to Washington’s proposal for a ceasefire with Moscow. Shortly after Trump delivered his remarks, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said thatcontacts between Moscow and Washington in the coming days could not be ruled out. According to a reporter with the Kremlin pool,Dmitry Smirnov, a phone conversation between the US and Russian presidents will be held on Friday.

Thus far,Moscow has not provided any official reaction to the statementsmade following the conclusion of US-Ukraine talks in Jeddah. Previously, top Russian officials have stated that a temporary truce is not a solution to the Ukrainian conflict, and that the root problems must be addressed instead.

A pause in the hostilities will be only used by Kiev and its backers to rearm and get ready for a new round of fighting, Moscow has suggested.

USAID Official Issues Stunning Order to Remaining Staffers: Shred and Burn All Your Documents, Including Classified Ones

A stunning email issued by a USAID official today will generate a national uproar and provoke another massive legal battle.

Politico obtained an email from a senior official at USAID ordering the remaining staff to convene at the agency’s former headquarters on Tuesday to destroy all remaining documents by either shredding or burning them.

USAID’s acting executive secretary Erica Carr told the staff to meet at the RRB 14th Street Lobby to “shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break.”

Carr also ordered staff to label the burn bags with the words “SECRET” and “USAID/B/IO/” in dark Sharpie, if possible. She also said to make sure the burn bags did not overfill and to close them with staples at the top.

This means classified documents will be (and are) being burned.

A former USAID official confirmed to Politico that the email was real and said he had “never seen something like this.”

“I’ve never seen something like this — en masse. Everyone with a safe is supposed to keep it up to date and destroy documents when they no longer need to be stored. Sometimes security will check your safe and tell you if you have to clean out old material.”

NBC News reported that groups challenging the Trump administration’s efforts to shutter USAID have filed an emergency motion to stop this destruction immediately.

“Defendants are, as this motion is being filed, destroying documents with potential pertinence to this litigation,” the filing reads.

“Although Plaintiffs do not know at this moment which records are being destroyed, the destruction of records may severely undermine the agency’s ability to function. For example, destruction of records that contain information about the agency’s operations may make it extraordinarily difficult— if not impossible—to recreate and rebuild agency programming” if their lawsuit is successful, the motion adds.

NBC News notes that U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols, who was appointed by Trump, is presiding over the case and has yet to rule on the request. Both sides have been ordered to file a status report on the motion by tomorrow morning and a schedule for moving forward.

Trump says US and Russia to hold imminent talks on Ukraine – Reuters

Negotiations will reportedly take place on Tuesday or Wednesday after Kiev agreed to a 30-day ceasefire proposal

US President Donald Trump has announced that an American delegation will meet with their Russian counterparts “today or tomorrow” (March 11-12), Reuters reported on Tuesday.

The statement follows the conclusion of negotiations between the American and Ukrainian delegations in Saudi Arabia, during which Kiev agreed to a 30-day ceasefire and Washington committed to resuming intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

“That’s a total ceasefire,” Trump told reporters outside the White House on Tuesday after the talks. “Ukraine has agreed to it. And hopefully Russia will agree to it.”

Trump’s special envoy,Steve Witkoff, is expected to travel to Moscow in the coming days to discuss the Ukraine conflictwith Russian President Vladirmir Putin. But neither US nor Russian officials have publicly confirmed the trip or its exact date so far.

“We’re going to meet with them [the Russians] later on today and tomorrow and hopefully we’ll be able to [work] out a deal,” Trump continued. “I think the ceasefire is very important. If we can get Russia to do it, that’ll be great. If we can’t we just keep going on and people are gonna get killed, lots of people.”

Russia has yet to issue an official response to the statements following the US-Ukraine talks in Jeddah.

Moscow has previously indicated that any temporary ceasefire deal is unacceptable, arguing it would only allow Kiev to regroup and rearm. Putin stated in January that Russia is seeking a long-term peace based on respect and the legitimate interests of all people living in the region.

Chilean-American Gonzalo Lira in a Ukrainian jail after being arrested by the country’s secret service

The fact that only Moscow cared about the fate of US blogger Gonzalo Lira, who died in a Ukrainian prison last year,is a sign of the “deepest crisis” affecting the international bodies that are supposed to protect journalists, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova has said.

Lira, a Chilean-American citizen, died behind bars in Ukraine in January 2024, while awaiting trial for “systematically justifying the Russian aggression.”

Zakharova recalled the ordeal of the US journalist during a conference on the development of modern media at the Moscow School of Economics (MSE) on Tuesday.

“Has anyone else talked about Gonzalo Lira? An American journalist, He had a US passport. Has anyone talked about him besides Russia? Try to remember. Nobody did,”she insisted.

When asked about Lira’s incarceration, the White House and the US State Department replied with “strategic silence, generously paid for by USAID, an American agency that supposedly promotes international development. It is ridiculous,” the spokeswoman stressed.

The blogger, writer and filmmaker, who had Hollywood experience, was first detained by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in early 2022, but released after a week without any charges being pressed against him.

Lira was arrested again in May 2023 and released on bail three months later; he claimed he’d been subjected to torture while in prison. He ended up in custody again in late July that year after jumping bail and attempting to flee the country to seek asylum in Hungary.

At that time, his father, Gonzalo Lira Sr., suggested that the administration of then-President Joe Biden gave “at least tacit approval of Gonzalo’s arrest.” The journalist’s family later blamed Kiev for his death in prison.

Australia to Receive No Exemption from 25 Percent Steel, Aluminium Tariffs

The decision means approximately $1 billion worth of Australian steel and aluminium exports to the US will now be subject to the full 25 percent tariff.

The verdict is in.

Australia will not be granted an exemption from the 25 percent tariffs on aluminium and steel imports imposed by the United States, the White House has confirmed.

Despite former U.S. President Donald Trump saying his administration would seriously consider excluding Australia from the levies, White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt revealed no exemption would be made.

“He considered it, and considered against it. There will be no exemptions,” she told the ABC.

Pressed on the reasoning, Leavitt responded, “America First steel.”

She added, “If they want to be exempted, they should consider moving steel manufacturing here.”

The decision means approximately $1 billion worth of Australian steel and aluminium exports to the United States will now be subject to the full 25 percent tariff.

According to United Nations COMTRADE data, Australian iron and steel exports to the United States are valued at approximately $378 million (US$237 million), while aluminium exports are worth around $503 million.

However, that still amounts to only 1 percent of steel imports, and 2 percent of aluminium.

Further, Australia’s largest steel manufacturer, BlueScope, largely circumvented the last set of tariffs during the first Trump administration by investing in production facilities in the United States.

NUUK, Greenland, March 11 (Reuters) - Polling stations closed in Greenland on Tuesday in a parliamentary election brought into the international spotlight by U.S. President Donald Trump's pledge to take control of the mineral-rich island, firing up a debate over its independence.

Voting had been extended by half an hour past a 2200 GMT deadline amid high turnout at several of the 72 polling stations across the Arctic island, where 40,500 people were eligible to cast their ballot.

There were no exit polls, and a final tally of the vote could take between three and five hours to complete, Greenland's election authority has said.

If conservatives are counting on the Supreme Court to rule birthright citizenship for illegal aliens unconstitutional, think again – it isn’t the slam dunk many believe it to be. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t a better path to abolishing this disastrous policy for good.

Some background: President Trump’s Jan. 20 executive order rolling back birthright citizenship for illegal aliens stipulates that natural-born U.S. citizens must have at least one parent who is a citizen or permanent resident.

On Feb. 19, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a nationwide injunction on the order until it hears the case in June. Instead, Congress needs to immediately back up President Trump’s executive order before it makes its way to the Supreme Court. Western F-16s ‘can’t compete’ with Russian Su-35s – Ukrainian Air Force

The US-made jets delivered to Kiev lack a cutting-edge, according to a force spokesperson

US-made F-16 fighter jets supplied to Ukraine by Western nations cannot fully compete with Russia’s Su-35 multirole fighter in aerial combat,Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yuri Ignat has said.

Washington approved F-16 deliveries to Kiev in mid-2023, allowing NATO allies to send jets and train Ukrainian pilots.

Speaking to Ukrainian TV channel Novosti.Live on Tuesday, Ignat pointed out “the modifications that Ukraine has cannot compete one-on-one in an air battle.We need a comprehensive approach as the [Russian] Su-35 is a relatively new jet…”he said. “This includes ground-based air defense, electronic warfare systems, and ideally, an airborne radar. Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway have pledged to supply Ukraine with 80 F-16s,though most will take years to arrive. In 2024, Ukraine received about 18 aircraft, but one F-16 was lost in August when a veteran pilot was killed in a crash.

The cause remains unclear, with speculation about friendly fire from a Western-provided Patriot missile.

Following the incident, Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky dismissed the commander of the Air Force.

Kiev expected the F-16s to be a potential game-changer on the battlefield, but outdated radar systems and the absence of the Link 16 tactical network have limited their effectiveness.

Moscow has condemned Western arms shipments to Ukraine, saying they prolong the war without altering its course. It has also called F-16 deliveries an escalation. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned the jets would not shift the battlefield situation and said Moscow would consider them legitimate targets if launched from third-country airfields.

A senior USAID official on Tuesday ordered the agency's remaining staff to report to their now-former headquarters in Washington DC for an "all day" group effort to destroy documents, many of which contain sensitive information, Politico reports.

The materials marked for destruction include "classified safes and personnel documents" at the Ronald Reagan Building, according to an email sent by USAID's acting executive director, Erica Carr.

"Shred as many documents first, and reserve the burn bags for when the shredder becomes unavailable or needs a break," read the email instructing staff to label the burn bags with "SECRET" and "USAID/B/IO" (which stands for "bureau or independent office") in dark sharpie.

UPDATE: Nearly Half of Department of Education Employees Laid Off in Reduction of Force by Secretary Linda McMahon

Secretary of Education Linda McMahon ordered Reduction in Force layoffs targeting roughly half the department’s over 4,000 employees, effective March 21. Those laid off will receive full pay and benefits until June 9th, as well as severance pay or retirement benefits. About 600 of the workers had previously accepted buyout offers.

President Donald Trump campaigned on shutting down the Education Department. Trump recently said he is looking at signing an executive order starting the process, however complete elimination of the department would require Congressional approval.

Earlier Tuesday, the department sent out an email telling employees to take their laptops and vacate their offices by 6 p.m. because the headquarters in Washington, D.C. and regional offices would be shut down for “security “reasons” until Thursday morning when office hours would resume.

McMahon reposted a White House video clip Tuesday evening saying she was fulfilling President Trump’s order to put herself out of a job, “I think @POTUS made it very clear, that he thought that the Department of Education should totally go away — and he said that my successful job will be to put myself OUT of a job. I’m working to fulfill that mandate that he gave to me… but in the meantime, we want to make sure that the programs — everything that is put in place — continues to operate in a more efficient way.”

Trump offers new 51st state deal to Canada

The US president has announced he will double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum, reiterating his desire to annex the country

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said he would impose an even higher levy on Canadian imports, doubling steel and aluminum tariffs to 50%. He also reiterated that he wants to annex the world’s second largest country,stating that the only way to resolve the tariffs standoff would be for Canada to become the “cherished” 51st state of the US.

Trump announced the move in a post on his platform Truth Social, explaining that the hike in tariffs was in response to the 25% retaliatory surcharge on electricity exports to the US imposed on Monday by Ontario, Canada’s most populous province.

“I have instructed my Secretary of Commerce to add an ADDITIONAL 25% Tariff, to 50%, on all STEEL and ALUMINUM COMING INTO THE UNITED STATES FROM CANADA, ONE OF THE HIGHEST TARIFFING NATIONS ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD,” Trump wrote, adding that the hike would come into effect on Wednesday.

The president also demanded Canada drop what he had described as“anti-american farmer tariff of 250% to 390% on various US dairy products,” as well as other “egregious” levies. A failure to comply will result in further action, namely the targeting of Canadian car production using measures set to “essentially, permanently shut down the automobile manufacturing business,” Trump warned.

Trump announced 25% tariffs on Canada early in February, but delayed them for a month, until last Tuesday.

Exemptions were granted to Canadian automakers and goods covered by the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) until April.Ottawa responded by imposing tariffs on $30 billion worth of American products, with an additional $125 billion in duties set for next month.

Trump also repeated his claims that the US has been “subsidizing” Canada by more than $200 billion a year, but suggested joining the United States as “our cherished Fifty First State” would be the best way to fix the outstanding issues between the two nations, and that both of them would greatly benefit from it.

Starting in December 2024, Trump and his close circle repeatedly expressed support for the idea of taking over Canada. The idea has been rejected by Canadian leaders and the population alike. A recent YouGov poll suggested that up to 77% of Canadians firmly oppose annexation, while only some 15% are in favor of it.

Incoming Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has vowed to fight and win the trade war with Washington, admitting however, that “this victory will not be easy.” Carney also rejected ceding sovereignty to the US, stating on Sunday that “Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) said on March 10 that it is seeking to terminate a rule allowing food manufacturers to use additives without formal regulatory approval.

The Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) rule allows companies to self-approve the inclusion of additives in food items without requiring a review and the approval of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The rule enables manufacturers to add an ingredient even if the FDA has not determined its safety.

On Monday, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. directed the acting FDA commissioner to explore the possibility of eliminating the “self-affirmed GRAS pathway” available to companies, the department said in a statement.

“This will enhance the FDA’s oversight of ingredients considered to be GRAS and bring transparency to American consumers,” HHS said.

As of now, manufacturers submit notices through the FDA’s GRAS notification program, which is not a mandatory process. The agency assesses 75 such submitted notices on average each year.

By eliminating the self-affirm pathway, companies would be required to publicly notify the FDA before introducing new ingredients to food items. The notification must include details such as underlying safety data and the intended use of the ingredients

Militants take hundreds hostage in Pakistan – AFP

An armed group has reportedly seized a passenger train in Balochistan province

Armed militants have seized a train in Pakistan’s Balochistan province and are holding 450 passengers hostage, according to AFP news agency.

The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating that its fighters struck the railway track with explosives before taking control of the train in the remote Sibi district, the news agency wrote, citing a statement issued by the group.

A senior railway official in Quetta, the capital of the province, has confirmed the seizure of hostages, according to AFP. The train driver is said to have been injured.

In a purported BLA statement circulating on social media, the group claims that 11 military personnel have been killed. The militants have reportedly threatened to kill all the hostages if the Pakistani authorities launch an operation to free them.

The group claims to have released women, children, and Baloch passengers from the train, and says it has kept 100 hostages who are active-duty personnel of the Pakistani military, police, the country’s anti-terrorism force and intelligence officers.

BLA has also claimed that it has repelled a Pakistani military ground assault, but helicopters and drones continue to conduct airstrikes. It has demanded an immediate halt to the air bombardment, warning that otherwise the hostages will be executed within an hour.

BLA is an armed separatist group that has long sought independence for the Balochistan province from the central government in Islamabad. It has been designated as a terrorist organization by Pakistan and two other countries: the United Kingdom and the United States.

Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest but least populated province; it is home to key mining projects and the ethnic Baloch minority.

The insurgents frequently target police and military forces in the region, as well as foreigners, particularly Chinese nationals assisting in the construction of Pakistan’s infrastructure projects as part of Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. Apart from the separatists, Islamist militants are known to operate in the area.

The train in question is reported to be the Jaffar Express, a passenger train operated daily by Pakistan Railways between Quetta and Peshawar.

Pakistan has repeatedly accused neighboring Afghanistan of providing a safe haven for BLA fighters, particularly before the Taliban took control of the country.

However,there is no evidence that the new government in Kabul is cracking down on the separatists.
