Prior to this, the Likud was admitted as an observer to the Patriots for Europe caucus in the European Parliament, in which all three parties are members, as well as the far-right Freedom Party of Austria. FPÖ used the meeting between its representatives and those of the Likud at the Congress of the Patriots in Madrid to announce the end of Israel’s long boycott against this party.

Since the FPÖ was at the same time downgrading relations with Israel in the coalition negotiations it held to form a new government in Austria, the Likud had to retract its reconciliatory position and announce that it is distancing itself from the FPÖ, which made the party very angry.

While Israel is looking for ways to create new political alliances in a changing Europe, Ariel Muzicant, president of the European Jewish Congress and former head of the Austrian Jewish community, feels a growing despair, not only because of the extremely troubled times that Jews are experiencing all over Europe, especially after the October 7 massacre, but at the growing misunderstanding among the Israeli government on the position of European Jewry as well.

Netanyahu and Katz direct IDF to ‘prepare to defend’ Syrian Druze suburb of Damascus

Instruction comes as new Syrian government authorities clash with local Druze gunmen in Jaramana, just outside capital

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed the Israel Defense Forces on Saturday to “prepare to defend” the Druze-majority city of Jaramana on the outskirts of Damascus in Syria.

A statement issued by Katz’s office said the Damascus suburb was “currently under attack by the forces of the Syrian regime.”

According to reports from Syria, authorities from the new Syrian government have been clashing with local Druze gunmen during a security campaign in Jaramana. At least one Syrian officer was killed, while another was captured and later released, the reports said.

“We will not allow the extreme Islamic regime in Syria to harm the Druze. If the regime harms the Druze, it will be struck by us,” Katz said.

“We are committed to our Druze brothers in Israel to do everything to prevent harm to their Druze brothers in Syria, and we will take all the steps required to maintain their safety,” he added.

What’s Jewish about this year’s Academy Awards? Lots of controversy, of course

As Hollywood gears up to give itself its annual pat on the back, there’s a top-notch crop of films to pique The Tribe’s interest – and a healthy dose of off-screen drama, to boot

It is time, once again, for Hollywood to put on its makeup and give itself a round of applause. Viewership of the annual Academy Awards telecast is less than half of what it was 25 years ago, but the event is still a substantial mile marker, and a way for mainstream audiences to familiarize themselves with the previous year’s quality cinema offerings. (That doesn’t mean they’ll actually watch them, but at least they can say, “Oh, yeah, I’ve heard of that.”) And there is a nice mix of Jewish stories among this year’s nominees.

The most notable is “The Brutalist,” a massive concrete slab of a movie from director and co-writer Brady Corbet. The film, which has 10 nominations in total, stars Adrien Brody as a Hungarian-Jewish concentration camp survivor who comes to America to discover a new shade of antisemitism. Brody’s character, László Tóth, is a brilliant and uncompromising architect who, through a series of twists and turns, finds himself commissioned by a Pennsylvania industrialist with the intensely goyische name of Harrison Lee Van Buren (played with tremendous gusto by Guy Pearce.) The relationship between patron and artist takes on weighty symbolism over the course of the movie’s 215-minute run time. (Fear not, there is an intermission baked in; “The Brutalist” isn’t too brutal to the bladder.)

A leitmotif of “The Brutalist” is the existence of Israel. During an early sequence in which Tóth is first returning to his passion — forging, hammering and building — we hear a radio announcing the formation of the Jewish state. At several points in the narrative the idea of moving to Israel comes up, as it would for any displaced Jew and his family in the mid-20th century. Opinions vary on the notion — it means giving up on an American dream, but maybe it is the only logical endpoint. Sympathetic characters in the movie call emigrating to Israel “coming home,” a reverberating phrase from the film’s first scene when Toth’s niece is seen questioned by Soviet-aligned forces as a displaced person.

The movie is ambivalent in its messaging concerning Israel, which has brought great consternation to some viewers. Corbet, who is not Jewish, is a hero to many young cinephiles — his deployment of the VistaVision process, the first use of this anamorphic technique for a feature film since 1961, immediately wins him credibility points. But his refusal to have a character turn to the camera and say “Israel is a settler colonial project and must be denounced” has caused many who otherwise love the movie to gnash their teeth. What’s more, there have also been some who interpret the film’s final scene as being slyly anti-Zionist. Sadly, there’s no way for me to explain that further without spoiling the ending of the movie, so skip over the next paragraph if you’d prefer not to know.

Now its been reported that a "secret group of agents who investigate UFOs, or “unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP)” as they call it, are worried they will be caught in the crossfire as an imminent FBI purge hangs over their heads."

The Trump administration is expected to target specific FBI agents who also worked on the Jan. 6 case, some of whom are UAP Working Group agents.

Agents across the bureau have been ordered to fill out a questionnaire detailing their involvement in the Capitol attack investigation.

According to Politico, the UAP working group is an "informal collection of agents" whose existence has never been disclosed and has been active for more than a year as yet another undisclosed FBI UFO working group.

In a statement to Politico, the FBI confirmed the existence of the office but refused to comment further, including to say how many members it has or how long it has been investigating UAPs in an organized manner.

"The FBI investigates Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena when there is potential for a violation of federal law — particularly unlawful acts that could adversely affect our national interests — and to gather, share, and analyze intelligence to combat security threats facing the US," the bureau told Politico.

With Trump's swiftly-unfolding plans to purge the government of anyone who doesn't fall in line, it's impossible to say whether the FBI's "X-Files stylr" office will continue to exist, but the acknowledgment by some of the existence of such an office is proof that the FBI continues its course since Roswell of investigations of UFO or UAP phenomenon but as is status quo, "in the dark."

All the while, the Defense Department this month confirmed it is investigating claims made by government contractor Jake Barber on NewsNation that he helped the military retrieve UFO technology.

Investigative journalist Ross Coulthart, who interviewed Barber at length about his background and experiences, says the development could lead to a greater understanding of UFOs, or Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAPs).

That’s if the government is forthcoming with its findings, the truth is out there, but will the public ever really know?
