As the next Trump administration is poised to crack down on illegal immigration impacting the nation, the Oregon Department of Administrative Services is in the midst ofconducting mandatory staff training sessions that instruct employees not to cooperate with Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE). The trainings cover Oregon's sanctuary laws, which prohibit state and local law enforcement and government employees from assisting federal immigration officials with immigration enforcement.

On Thursday, Oregon's Department of Administrative Services sent an email to its more than 11,000 employees, urging them to complete its "Oregon Sanctuary Promise" training,which teaches employees how to recognize behavior that may be "violating the law" if ICE agentswere to approach government employees.

"A new training will be assigned to you in Workday (starting Friday, Jan. 17) and I want to explain its importance and the timeline for completing the training. The title of the training is Oregon Sanctuary Promise and it covers Oregon's laws relating to our status as a 'sanctuary state.'Many of you know that Oregon was the first state to pass a law (in 1987)prohibiting state and local police and government from helping federal authorities with immigration enforcement," wrote Debbie Dennis, deputy director of Oregon's Administrative Services, in an email.

"This training is about Oregon law and how it affects what state employees can and cannot do. The training will help you identify if you are witnessing behavior that violates the law, and you will know what action to take. And in the rare event that any of us are approached to assist in immigration enforcement, we'll know the steps Oregon law specifies we must take," the email continued. "The training takes about 30 minutes, and we have 30 days to complete it. The training comes as Democratic-run sanctuary states and cities across the nation devise plans to combat President-elect Donald Trump's proposed immigration enforcement laws. This includes mass deportations, the elimination of sanctuary cities, and resuming border wall construction.

The request followed the arrest ofJesus Ascensio-Molina, 31, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, who is being held in custodyfor allegedly stabbing an elderly man during an attempted carjacking on December 27, 2024.

According to an ICEofficial, Ascensio-Molina was deported in 2013 and later returned to the USon an unknown date. Since his release, he has facednumerous criminal charges, including an attempted murder arrest in 2018. In 2018, ICE submitted a detainerfor Ascensio-Molina, requesting that the state notify them if he were to be released from prison. ICE was never alerted of his release due to Oregon's sanctuary laws, an ICE spokesperson told The Post Millennial. Ascensio-Molina went on to reoffend.

During a recent commissioner's meeting, Commissioner West asserted: "I want to make it clear that I think this was preventable, and I think it was horrific.When we see this happen in our community, I don't think that we should be ok with Oregon not working with ICE to deport this guy."

Washington — A federal appeals court on Friday declared the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals immigration policy unlawful, casting a cloud of uncertainty over more than half a million unauthorized immigrants brought to the U.S. as children ahead of President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration.

A panel of judges before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit upheld a lower court ruling that found that a Biden administration rule to codify DACA violated U.S. immigration law. The 2012 Obama administration memo that originally created the policy has also been found to be unlawful by federal courts.

Friday's ruling, however, will not immediately change the status quo. By suspending its order, the panel of judges kept DACA alive for current recipients and closed to new applicants, as the program has been operating for the past few years.

For more than 12 years, DACA has allowed hundreds of thousands of immigrants who crossed into the U.S. illegally or overstayed their visas as minors to live and work in the U.S., without fear of deportation. They are colloquially known as "Dreamers," a moniker stemming from the Dream Act, a bipartisan effort to legalize them that Congress has considered, but failed to pass, for over two decades.

While it affirmed the lower court order that voided the Biden administration's DACA regulation, the 5th Circuit panel narrowed the ruling's impact, making it applicable only in Texas, the state spearheading the Republican-led lawsuit against the program. The panel paused its ruling as it relates to current DACA beneficiaries, pending another ruling by the 5th Circuit or the Supreme Court, allowing renewals to continue.

The panel also ruled that the deportation deferrals offered by DACA could be legally separated from the work permits that beneficiaries receive, giving the Biden administration a partial victory on its argument that the deportation protections should be left intact if the work authorization provision is struck down.

As of the end of September 2024, there were roughly 538,000 immigrants enrolled in DACA, according to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, the agency that oversees the initiative. To qualify for the policy, applicants had to establish they arrived in the U.S. by their 16th birthday and before June 2007; graduated from an American high school or enrolled in the military; and lacked any serious criminal records.

Friday's ruling could pave the way for the U.S. Supreme Court to finally settle the years-long legal battle over DACA. But it's unclear how the incoming Trump administration will handle the case and whether it will try to terminate the program. While President Biden's Justice Department has vigorously defended DACA in court, the first Trump administration tried phasing out the policy, arguing it was unlawful. The Supreme Court in 2020 prevented DACA's termination on technical grounds.

The Justice Department declined to comment on Friday's court order.

The Trump transition team did not immediately say how the incoming administration would approach DACA. Trump and his advisers have pledged to launch a sweeping crackdown on illegal and legal immigration, vowing to oversee mass deportations of those living in the U.S. illegally, enact tougher border controls and cut legal admissions of immigrants and refugees.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton called the 5th Circuit's ruling "a win for Texas."

People have been left mind-blown after leaning why the Moon can be seen in the sky during the day.

It doesn't happen every day, but you may have spotted from time to time the Moon dwelling up above in the middle of the day, sometimes against a clear blue sky.

Most of us associate the Moon as a clear telltale sign it's bedtime, so it can be a bit disconcerting when it pops up before the Sun has even gone in for the night.

But there's actually a scientific explanation as to why the Moon sometimes lingers in the day time, which is blowing some people's minds.

In November 2023, 'post-apocalyptic warlord', Stew Peters, shared an image of the Moon in the sky on Twitter, writing: "This full Moon is out in the middle of the day. That's not supposed to happen."

However, that's not entirely true and is a phenomenon that has occurred since… well, forever.

Planetary geologist and NASA scientist Sarah Noble explained that most people hold a misconception that the Moon is only visible at night because of the way it's portrayed in movies and books.

In a video on YouTube, the scientist added: "Even the weatherman uses the Sun as a symbol for day and the Moon for night."

Why do we sometimes see the Moon during the day?

In actuality, the Moon spends 'almost as much as time in the daytime sky' as it does the night.

What changes is how we're able to see it as the Moon has to be in the 'right' part of the sky.

This boils down to how close the Moon is to our home, Earth, and how it orbits around us.

The phase of the Moon itself is also a factor, not forgetting the season and how clear the sky is on one particular day to the next.

After all, it's difficult to see even the Sun when it's blowing a gale and stormy clouds roll in.

Noble continued: "During a full Moon, the Moon is opposite the Sun in the sky. That's why we can see the full face of the Moon reflecting sunlight."

However, 'as the Earth rotates,' the Moon rises 'just as the Sun sets' on 'one day of the month'.

Noble added: "In the days before a full Moon, if you look in the eastern sky, you can find the almost full Moon rising before the sun sets.

And the days after a full Moon, you can look in the western sky and find the Moon setting after the Sun has come up."

But if you want to catch a glimpse of the Moon chilling in the daytime sky, Noble says you'll have to be fast.

The scientist said she has even made a 'game' of daytime Moon-spotting by timing her daily bike rides to try and spot it, but has to adjust her times by around 50 minutes per day as the Moon 'marches through its phases'.

She concluded: "So keep your eyes peeled."

Trump’s Border Czar Promises Mass Arrests ‘Without Apology’ After Taking Office

Tom Homan, who is President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming border czar, pledged to begin mass deportations immediately following the inauguration on Monday.

During an interview with Fox News anchor Jesse Watters on Friday night, Homan declared that ICE would “finally” be allowed to carry out its responsibilities by deporting millions of undocumented migrants.

Earlier this week, a Wall Street Journal report indicated that roughly 200 officers are set to arrive in Chicago on Tuesday for a large-scale deportation operation—taking place just a day after the inauguration. But he also said that Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers would be operating across the country.

Watters asked Homan about reports claiming “there’s going to be a big raid all across the country.”

Homan not only vowed deportations on day one but that ICE is being told to enforce immigration law “without apology.”

“ICE is finally going to go out and do their job,’ he said. “We’re going to take the handcuffs off ICE and let them go arrest criminal aliens.”

Watters asked, “Am I blowing your cover when I announce that there’s going to be a big raid in Chicago on Tuesday? Or do you want people to know maybe they can self-deport?”

“There’s going to be a big raid all across the country. Chicago is just one of many places. We got 24 field offices across the country. On Tuesday, you’re going expect ICE — ICE is finally going to go out and do their job. We’re going to take the handcuffs off ICE and let them go arrest criminal aliens. That’s what’s going to happen,” Homan pledged.

The Fox host then asked Homan what agents have mostly been doing over the past four years of the Biden-Harris regime.

“They haven’t been able to do much because Secretary Mayorkas had new ICE priorities. Get this. Now, the secretary of Homeland Security has told ICE you can’t arrest an illegal alien if he’s just here illegally,” Homan responded. “He’s got to be convicted of a serious crime or be a national security threat. He told immigration officers not to enforce immigration law.

“Well, we’re telling ICE you’re going to enforce immigration law without apology. You’re going to concentrate the worst for public safety threats first, but no one’s off the table. If they’re in the country illegally, they’ve got a problem,” he added.

During a phone interview with the Washington Examiner last month, Homan provided some insight into how the Trump administration will arrest, detain, and deport hundreds of thousands or even millions of illegal immigrants living in the United States.

Homan said that immigrants whose only crime was coming into the country illegally should be sent back to their home country, even if they are just living with or related to someone who has an arrest warrant out for them.

“In sanctuary cities, expect a lot of collateral arrests. I mean, not priority criminal arrests. We can’t get the bad guy in jail. That means we have to go into the communities and find them, and there may be others. We expect a lot of collateral arrests,” Homan added.

Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance have said they will start by arresting people with criminal records and the 1.4 million people who have been told by a judge to be deported but have not been sent back to their home country.

“There’s over 700,000 criminal aliens with criminal convictions,” Homan told the outlet. “ICE is going to do what they’re good at.”

While running for president in 2016, Trump made immigration and crime major issues. He kept his promise insofar as he was able to via executive orders, as he did not get much help from a Republican and then Democrat-controlled Congress.
