Prince William shocked by death of ex-nanny's stepson in New Orleans attack

The Prince of Wales has said he and Catherine are "shocked and saddened" by the death of his former nanny's stepson, Edward Pettifer, who was killed in the New Orleans attack.

The 31-year-old was among 14 people killed in a vehicle attack on New Year's Day.

His stepmother Alexandra Pettifer, previously known as Tiggy Legge-Bourke, cared for Prince William and Prince Harry in the 1990s.

Prince William said: "Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Pettifer family and all those innocent people who have been tragically impacted by this horrific attack."

This comes after palace sources said King Charles was "deeply saddened" by the death and has been in touch with Mr Pettifer's family.

The 1 January attack saw a 42-year-old US Army veteran drive a pick-up truck into crowds along New Orleans's famous Bourbon Street before being shot dead by police.

The New Orleans coroner gave Mr Pettifer's preliminary cause of death as "blunt force injuries", PA reports.

In a tribute, Mr Pettifer's family described him as a "wonderful son, brother, grandson, nephew and friend to so many".

Prince Harry has also been informed but will not be commenting publicly on the news.

Loop Capital reiterates Buy on McDonald's stock despite sluggish same-store sales

On Friday, Loop Capital upheld its Buy rating on McDonald's Corporation (NYSE:MCD) shares, maintaining a price target of $342.00.

The decision followed a series of checks with U.S. franchisees which revealed that McDonald's same-store sales growth was slightly below expectations in the fourth quarter of 2024.

"Per our contacts, same-store sales remained sluggish at flat year-over-year during the last seven weeks of 4Q," the analysts said.

This performance suggests that the full-quarter same-store sales were flat to down by 0.5%, which is slightly lower than the previously estimated growth of 0.5% and the consensus projection of a 0.3% increase.

Despite this, the analysis indicates that on a two-year stacked basis, the flat to slightly negative comparable sales in Q4 would represent a 3.8% to 4.3% increase. This is a dip from the 8.4% two-year stack reported in the third quarter of 2024. However, when looking at the implied three-year stacks of 14.1% to 14.6%, the figures are consistent with the 14.5% three-year stacks reported by McDonald's for the third quarter.

Loop Capital's confidence in McDonald's stock remains steadfast, with the maintained price target based on an estimated 18.5 times the 2025 enterprise value to earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EV/EBITDA).

The Department of Defense, the General Services Administration and NASA are seeking industry comments on a proposed new rule to add workforce knowledge and skill requirements to government cybersecurity and IT support services acquisitions.

The agencies published Tuesday in the Federal Register their recommendation to add the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education, or NICE, Framework to the Federal Acquisition Regulation.

The NICE Framework, developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology, establishes a common language to be implemented not just in government, but also in the commercial and academic sectors.

It identifies proficiencies needed to perform technology and cybersecurity-related work.

The resource aims to improve communication between stakeholders and enhance the development, recruitment and retention of highly qualified professionals in government.

Proposed FAR Changes

Under the Proposed Rule, all agencies will be required to elucidate an acquisition plan’s cybersecurity workforce tasks, knowledge, skills and roles in adherence to the NICE Framework.

All offers, quotes and reporting requirements contractors submit to agencies must also align with the NICE Framework.

GSA, DOD and NASA will accept written comments on the proposed FAR amendments until March 4.

Although SpaceX founder Elon Musk is known for outspokenness and controversial comments on his social media site X, he has been relatively restrained when it comes to US space policy in recent years.

For example, he has rarely criticized NASA or its overall goal to return humans to the Moon through the Artemis Program.

Rather, Musk, who has long preferred Mars as a destination for humans, has more or less been a team player when it comes to the space agency's lunar-focused plans.

This is understandable from a financial perspective, as SpaceX has contracts worth billions of dollars to not only build a Human Landing System as part of NASA's Artemis Program but also to supply food, cargo, and other logistics services to a planned Lunar Gateway in orbit around the Moon.

But privately, Musk has been critical of NASA's plans, suggesting that the Artemis Program has been moving too slowly and is too reliant on contractors who seek cost-plus government contracts and are less interested in delivering results.

Silent on policy no longer

During the last 10 days, Musk has begun airing some of these private thoughts publicly.

On Christmas Day, for example, Musk wrote on X, "The Artemis architecture is extremely inefficient, as it is a jobs-maximizing program, not a results-maximizing program. Something entirely new is needed."

Then, on Thursday evening, he added this: "No, we’re going straight to Mars. The Moon is a distraction."

These are definitive statements that directly contradict NASA's plans to send a series of human missions to the lunar south pole later this decade and establish a sustainable base of operations there with the Artemis Program.

It would be one thing if Musk was just expressing his opinion as a private citizen.

But since playing a significant part in the election of Donald Trump as the next president of the United States last year, Musk has assumed an important advisory role for the incoming administration.

He was also partly responsible for the expected nomination of private astronaut Jared Isaacman to become the next administrator of NASA.

Although Musk is not directing US space policy, he certainly has a meaningful say in what happens.

So what does this mean for Artemis?

The fate of Artemis is an important question not just for NASA but for the US commercial space industry, the European Space Agency, and other international partners who have aligned with the return of humans to the Moon.

With Artemis, the United States is in competition with China to establish a meaningful presence on the surface of the Moon.

Based upon conversations with people involved in developing space policy for the Trump administration, I can make some educated guesses about how to interpret Musk's comments.

None of these people, for example, would disagree with Musk's assertion that "the Artemis architecture is extremely inefficient" and that some changes are warranted.

While the FBI's deputy assistant director, Chris Raia, emphasized on Thursday that investigators have found 'no definitive link' between Livelsberger and Jabbar, that hasn't stopped others from connecting seemingly ominous dots through Fort Bragg.

My Dad was a brilliant mechanic, he had the biggest 6 bay garage built in the early 1960's, with lots of Mechanics. He was known as the car, truck etc doctor, because he could listen to the engine and diagnose what needed fixing.

He was always a Ford fan, knew the entire history of Henry Ford. So when he retired he decided to find and restore this 1926 Model T, (?) with all original materials. He searched for parts all over the US and It took him years to do. It was a masterpiece and he'd drive it around in the small town in CT, he was invited to be in all patriotic parades. Some pictures of it.

He had gotten married to this woman that was fixated on money (yes she was a certain race), so when he died my brothers and sisters asked her to put the car in museum. She wouldn't donate, the b…tch, sold it to someone for $26,000. (Years later as she was dying, a month or so before her death, her aunt left her $50 million+, but she was on her deathbed and very bitter. The money she wanted all of her life came when she dying. That's what I call karma!

'Life Sprouts In Space' As Cowpea Seeds Germinate Under Microgravity Conditions

ISRO on Saturday said the cowpea seeds it had sent to space onboard the PSLV-C60 POEM-4 platform have germinated under microgravity conditions within four days of the launch of the mission.

The space agency sent eight cowpea seeds as part of the Compact Research Module for Orbital Plant Studies experiment conducted by the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre to study plant growth in microgravity conditions.

"Life sprouts in space! VSSC's CROPS experiment onboard PSLV-C60 POEM-4 successfully sprouted cowpea seeds in four days. Leaves expected soon," ISRO said in a post on X.

The PSLV-C60 mission placed two SpaDeX satellites in orbit on the night of Dec. 30. The fourth stage of the rocket carrying the POEM-4 platform has been orbiting the earth with 24 onboard experiments at an altitude of 350 km since Tuesday.

The CROPS experiment aims to understand how plants grow in the unique conditions of space, which is essential for future long-duration space missions.

The experiment involves growing eight cowpea seeds in a controlled environment with active thermal regulation, simulating conditions that plants might encounter during extended space travel.

CROPS is envisioned as a multi-phase platform to develop and evolve ISRO's capabilities for growing and sustaining flora in extraterrestrial environments.

Designed as a fully-automated system, a five to seven-day experiment has been planned to demonstrate seed germination and plant sustenance until reaching the two-leaf stage in a microgravity environment.

The cowpea seeds have been placed in a closed-box environment with active thermal control.

Passive measurements, including camera imaging, oxygen and carbon dioxide concentrations, relative humidity, temperature, and soil moisture monitoring, are available for plant growth and monitoring, the space agency said.

ISRO also posted a separate 'selfie video' of the chaser satellite of the space docking experiment that is orbiting the earth at an altitude of 470 km.

The chaser satellite is expected to dock with the target satellite in space on Tuesday, a feat that would make India only the fourth country to master this cutting-edge technology after Russia, the US and China.
