Convicted US spy worked on ‘genetic screening’ of Russians – FSB

A court in Moscow has sentenced US national Eugene Spector to 15 years in jail and a hefty fine on charges of espionage

US national Eugene ‘Gene’ Spector, who was found guilty of espionage earlier this week,had been collecting “biomedical” data in the country, Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) has said. The authorities believe thesematerials could have been used by the USgovernment to develop a genetic screening system for analyzing Russia’s population.

Over the past several years, there have been a number of high-profile cases in which Russian security services have accused American citizens of espionage. Since the escalation of the Ukraine conflict in February 2022, Moscow and Western nations have also increasingly expelled each other’s diplomats, claiming they are spies.

In a press release on Friday, the FSB alleged that the “American national, acting in the interest of the Pentagon and a commercial organization affiliated with it, gathered and handed over to a foreign party various biotechnological and biomedical data, including classified materials, with the aim of creating a high-speed genetic screening system of Russia’s population by the US.”

On Monday, a court in Moscow sentenced Spector to 15 years in prison as well as a 14 million-ruble ($135,000) fine.

The former chair of the board of Russia’sMedpolymerprom Group, a supplier of disposable medical items, was handed the punishment in conjunction with his previous sentencing for acting as an intermediary in a bribery case. In 2022, the US citizen of Russian origin was sentenced to 3.5 years behind bars after being found guilty of providing an aide to former Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich with free trip vouchers from 2015 to 2016.The judge ruled at the time that Spector had thus remunerated the woman for promoting the products of several pharmacy companies.

Last August, a court separately ordered his arrest on suspicion of espionage, though the details of the case were not made public.

Earlier this year, Russia and the US exchanged a total of 26 individuals held in several countries, in the largest prisoner swap of this kind since the end of the Cold War. Among those sent to the US were Wall Street Journal correspondent Evan Gershkovich and former US Marine Paul Whelan – both of whom had been convicted of espionage in Russia. In return, ten Russian nationals who Washington accused of being intelligence agents and cybercriminals were sent to Moscow.

In September, Moscow declared six British diplomats persona non grata, claiming that their activities in the country “showed signs of intelligence and subversive work.” The UK Foreign Office dismissed the accusations as “completely baseless.”

Big Tech’s H1B Arguments Aren’t Just FALSE… They’re Also Immoral. 1/2

A fierce debate has broken out between President-elect Donald J. Trump’s very recent tech industry supporters and his long-standing America First base. At the core of the disagreement is the subject of legal immigration—specifically, how Trump should handle so-called“high-skilled” foreign worker programs like the H1B visa.

One of the staunchest proponents of expanding the labor pool in this way is billionaire Elon Musk. In a Christmas Day post on X, Musk exclaimed America needs more than double the 160,000 semiconductor industry engineers said to be required by 2032.“

No, we need more like double that number yesterday! The number of people who aresuper talented engineers AND super motivatedin the USA is far too low,” Musk wrote, adding: “Think of this like a pro sports team: if you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be. That enables the whole TEAM to win.”

Additionally, Musk-allies and newly-named artificial intelligence (AI) advisors to President-elect Trump, David Sacks, and Sriram Krishnan, have both emerged as loud advocates for more legal immigration, expanding the high-skilled labor supply through changes to the H1B visa lottery.

_A FLAWED MORALITY.

While bringing allegedly top talent from around the world to the United States sounds good on its face,this isn’t actually what H1B visas do.

The O-1 visa is actually the program used to grant legal work status to a foreign nation in the United States that is considered a ‘once-in-a-generation’ intellectual talent in a critical industrial sector.

H1B visasapply more to workerswith skills that native-born Americans can easily learnthrough technical training programs or even collegiate classes. Think more programmer or mid-level software engineer than someone trained in semiconductor fabrication.

Even more concerning is that thebig tech companies routinely abuse H1B visasas part of a scheme to suppress the wages of both American and foreign workers while maximizing shareholder profits.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Justice ramped up enforcement of visa rules after a pattern emerged in which tech companies artificially create theappearance of a domestic work shortageto increase their H1B allotments. This ultimatelyresulted in native-born workers being laid offand replaced two or threefold by cheaper foreign H1B workers.

H1Bs benefit tech companies on two key fronts:

• First, on average, H1B workersare paid significantly lessthan their American-born counterparts. This effectively puts downward pressure on wages across the industry, meaning American workers also get paid less;

• Secondly, because thevisa is attached to the sponsor company, theforeign worker lacks the leverageafforded to American-born workers who can demand higher salaries by simply looking to take a job with a different firm. …AND A COMPLETE SCAM. (A have a tech client, their H1B visa employees are allowed to pursue citizen status while they work for the company, so they are not enslaved. Most take the job are seeking that, but they are paid much less than Americans. I doubt Amazon would encourage that.)

Little data actually supports the tech industry’s claims of a worker shortage and a need to end H1B country caps. The data does suggest, however, thatbig tech is replacingqualified and capableAmerican workers with cheaper foreign labor.

Between 2022 and 2024,Amazon laid off nearly 30,000 high-skilled workers. In the same period—though in compliance with federal law regarding when companies can request H1B visa workers—the online retail giantexpanded its workforce by nearly 100,000 foreign workers….

NEW YORK — A taxi driver whose car hit six pedestrians when he jumped a curb in a Manhattan shopping district on Christmas Day was having a medical episode at the time, New York City police said Thursday.

Two of those hurt are Australians, according to that country's foreign ministry.

An NYPD spokesperson would not elaborate on the type of type of medical episode the driver experienced but said no criminality is suspected at this stage. The 58-year-old was taken to a hospital in stable condition for further evaluation.

Also hospitalized after the yellow taxi drove onto the sidewalk across the street from Macy’s flagship store in Herald Square were a 9-year-old boy with a laceration to his right thigh, a 49-year-old woman with a leg injury and a 41-year-old woman. All were in stable condition, police said.

Three other pedestrians, women aged 19, 37 and 49, declined medical treatment.

A statement from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs did not give more details about its citizens who were hurt but said they were receiving consular assistance.

Herald Square is a major shopping destination for tourists and locals, with the Macy's store taking up an entire city block between 34th and 35th streets. It is among the city's many retailers that feature elaborate Christmas window displays.

Prime minister Han took over the role after President Yoon was impeached by parliament following his failed attempt to impose martial law on 3 December.

Han was supposed to lead the country out of its political turmoil, but opposition MPs argued that he was refusing demands to complete Yoon's impeachment process.

Chaos erupted in parliament as the vote was held on Friday.
