Syrian militants pledge to protect Russian bases – TASS

Damascus fell under the control of armed militants on Sunday

Speaking to Russia’s TASS news agency later on Sunday, an unnamed Kremlin source said that Russian officials “are in contact with representatives of the armed Syrian opposition.”

These representatives “have guaranteed the security of Russian military bases and diplomatic institutions on Syrian territory,” the source said, adding that “we hope for the continuation of political dialogue in the name of the interests of the Syrian people and the development of bilateral relations between Russia and Syria.”

Russia intervened in the Syrian Civil War in 2015, helping Assad wrest back control of his country from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS), and a panoply of foreign-sponsored militias and jihadist groups. This time around, Moscow did not commit forces to hold back the HTS and FSA assault, with the Russian Foreign Ministry stating that Assad had decided to relinquish power peacefully following back-channel talks with several opposition groups. ”Russia did not participate in these negotiations,” the ministry noted.

US launches strikes in Syria after Trump warned America should NOT get involved in Middle East conflict

The US launched 'dozens of precision airstrikes' in Syria on Sunday after rebels ousted longtime despotic leader Bashar al-Assad.

The strikes were carried out against known ISIS camps and operatives based in Central Syria, according to US Central Command.

This ongoing operation's objective was to prevent ISIS from taking advantage of the chaos and reorganizing after their attempt at a state collapsed in 2019, according to the Pentagon.

The US military struck 75 targets using war planes, including B-52s, F-15s, and A-10s. So far, there are no indications of civilian life lost.

'There should be no doubt - we will not allow ISIS to reconstitute and take advantage of the current situation in Syria,' said General Michael Erik Kurilla. 'All organizations in Syria should know that we will hold them accountable if they partner with or support ISIS in any way.'

This comes after President-elect Donald Trump said the US should not get involved in Syria's civil war.

After slamming President Barack Obama's supposed capitulation to Russia in the Syrian conflict, he wrote in all caps that the US should have nothing to do with war going forward.

'Syria is a mess but is not our friend, and the United States should have nothing to do with it. This is not our fight. Let it play out. Do not get involved!' Trump wrote on Saturday.

Consider the contrasting reactions to Russia’s reabsorption of Crimea and the American occupation of parts of Syria. In 2014, Moscow retook Crimea following a referendum held after Ukraine's legally-elected government was overthrown in a Western-backed coup. The move triggered sweeping sanctions, international outrage, and a narrative of “Russian aggression” that endures today.

Meanwhile, the US has maintained a military presence in Syria since 2015, despite having no UN mandate and no invitation from the then internationally recognized government in Damascus. Washington cites combating ISIS and ensuring “regional stability” as justifications, but its true motives are clear: controlling Syria's oil-rich northeast and limiting Iranian influence.
