BC teen with avian flu remains in critical condition, no new cases identified

The British Columbia teenager who contracted the province's first case of H5N1, better known as avian flu, remains in "critical condition."

The announcement was made on Tuesday, nearly two weeks after the infection was first confirmed. During that time, an investigation was conducted to determine the source, and whether anyone else was impacted.

According to Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry, the investigation found that the teen was infected with Clade 2.3.4.4b, Genotype D1.1, the same strain of flu currently making its way through the bird community in BC. Testing done by the BC Centre for Disease Control's Public Health Laboratory showed that it matched the strain in wild birds of the Fraser Valley, not those in poultry farms.

"Our thoughts continue to be with this young person as they remain in critical condition, and their family," Henry said. "I am confident in the extensive public health investigation that was led by the Fraser Health team in partnership with the BCCDC Public Health Laboratory, our partners at BC Children's Hospital and the chief veterinary officer."

She noted that, "though we have not been able to determine definitively the source of exposure, we were able to rule out many potential risks and ensure there are no further cases related to this young person."

Henry urged people to protect themselves against potential exposure by keeping up to date with flu vaccines, refraining from touching sick or dead animals and faeces, and keeping pets away from such things as well.

Avian flu spreads easily between aquatic birds, among whom it occurs naturally, though it can also be passed on to other animals, and humans. Since October 1, 2024, a total of 54 poultry premises have been found to be infected, alongside a number of wild birds.

A ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah has been announced.

CNN reports:

Israel’s security cabinet has approved the US-backed Lebanon ceasefire proposal, according to the Israeli prime minister’s office.

“The political-security cabinet approved this evening the United States’ proposal for a ceasefire arrangement in Lebanon, by a majority of 10 ministers against one opponent. Israel appreciates the contribution of the United States in the process, and maintains its right to act against any threat to its security,” the statement read.

During remarks on Tuesday, Joe Biden announced the ceasefire to end the violence in Lebanon but underscored Israel’s right of self-defense if Hezbollah “or anyone else” breaks the deal.

“Let me be clear,” Biden stated. “if Hezbollah or anyone else breaks the deal and poses a direct threat to Israel, then Israel retains the right to self-defense, consistent with international law.”

Leading up to the agreement, strikes by the IDF on Hezbollah leadership have been devastating as Israel has eliminated much of the top leadership of both Hamas and Hezbollah.

In September, it was announced that senior Hezbollah commander Ibrahim Aqil was killed in an airstrike in Lebanon’s capital, Beirut. Aqil was indicated in the 1983 bombing of the US Marine Corps barracks in Beirut, which killed 241 service members, and in the 1984 bombing of the U.S. Embassy in Beruit, which killed 63 people.

The IDF also eliminated Hezbollah’s long-time leader, Hassan Nasrallah, and Nabil Kaouk, deputy head of the group’s Central Council.

Ultimately, Cair dropped the suit when it became apparent they would need to open their books and reveal the details of who is funding them and by how much, but the former employee filed a lawsuit of her own.

Now, US Magistrate Judge David Schultz has ruled that CAIR’s donors, funding sources, including potentially foreign sources, and any assets owned by the group are within the “scope of permissible discovery.”

CAIR defines itself as a Muslim civil rights organization and advocacy group.

In 2008 the FBI ruled CAIR an unindicted co-conspirator in the terror-finance trial against the Holy Land Foundation and its former officials.

In recent years CAIR has been a leading voice in censoring and banning conservative voices on social media.

Although the Biden-Harris regime listed CAIR as a partner in fighting “anti-Semitism,” CAIR’s Executive Director Nihad Awad cheered the October 7th slaughter of 1,300 Jews in southern Israel by Hamas.

It defined a woman as ‘anyone living as a woman’, including biological males with or without a gender recognition certificate (GRC), stating that they were female. FWS successfully challenged this in Scotland’s courts, arguing it impinged on Westminster equalities law.

SNP ministers dropped the definition from their law, but issued revised guidance that continued to say ‘woman’ included a trans woman with a GRC.

FWS is appealing the point to the Supreme Court in London.

High Court judge Bahati Mwamuye also issued orders prohibiting the respondents from enjoying the Privileges & Immunities perks.

The government's move to grant Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation immunity in the country has been challenged by the Lawyers' body, which argues that it should be declared null and void.

The privileges are given to the non-humanitarian organisation.

The government announced, through a Gazette Notice dated October 4, 2024, that the foundation would enjoy certain privileges and immunities in the country.

"The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in this Order referred to as "the Foundation", being a charitable trust established to fight poverty, disease and inequality in over one hundred and forty countries globally, and with which the Government of Kenya has entered into an agreement for cooperation, is hereby declared to be an organisation to which section 11 of the Act shall apply," read the notice.

Tim Houston’s PCs win second consecutive majority government in Nova Scotia

Calling an early election paid off for Tim Houston and his Nova Scotia Progressive Conservatives, as Houston won a landslide victory in the province Tuesday.

The leaders of both opposition parties conceded the election within 30 minutes of results being reported as Houston’s victory became clear.

PCs under Houston won 41seats, leading in two ridings out of 55 with 52.8% of the popular vote at the time of publication, moving his government from a majority to a supermajority, compared to his 2021 victory, where the PC’s secured 31 seats and 38.44% of the vote.

The Liberal Party of Nova Scotia lost 12 seats when compared with the last election; the NDP won three, and the PC’s gained nine.

If the PCs maintain their 43-seat lead, they will be elected with the most seats in the province’s history.

In Nova Scotia, a party must secure two-thirds of the seats to gain a supermajority, meaning 37 seats were required. However, to hold its majority after a speaker is appointed, typically chosen from the governing party, a party must win 38 seats.

Houston needed 28 seats to form a majority. With a supermajority, Houston’s PCs can change the House’s procedural rules without working with opposition parties.

Houston’s party can now prevent opposition parties from filibustering through the use of house procedures. London Police Chief sounds alarm on “safe supply” drugs fuelling black market

London Police Chief Thai Truong warned that “safe supply” has exacerbated the illegal drug trade and resulted in unprecedented levels of drug overdoses.

Truong highlighted that “safe supply” has led to medications being diverted for sale on the black market.

“These diverted drugs are being resold within our community, trafficked to other jurisdictions, and even used as currency to obtain fentanyl, perpetuating the illegal drug trade. Specifically, we are seeing significant increases in the availability of diverted Dilaudid eight milligram tablets, which are often prescribed as part of the safe supply initiatives,” said Truong. “Vulnerable individuals are being targeted by criminals who exchange these prescriptions for fentanyl, exacerbating addiction and community harm.”

He highlighted the stark increase in drug overdoses over the last year, which he attributed to the “safe supply” program.

In 2021, 73 people in London died of drug overdoses. The following year saw 123 people die from drug overdoses, an increase of 68%. The subsequent year saw the number rise to 142, a further increase of 15%. Fatalities have since decreased marginally but remain well above pre-pandemic levels.

“Tragically, over 80% of opioid-related overdose deaths in London are linked to fentanyl,” said Truong.

The London police previously warned that “safe supply” drugs were fuelling the black market.

The federal government announced it will be suspending contracts with former minister of employment Randy Boissonnault’s former medical supply company in response to the onslaught of scandals surrounding the business which began this summer.

Global Health Imports has been suspended from “bidding or entering into contracts with the Government of Canada” by Public Services and Procurement Canada for 90 days.

A press release from the agency said the suspension was effective as of Monday.

“The suspension will last for a period of 90 days and may be extended as necessary until a final decision regarding the supplier’s status under the Ineligibility and Suspension Policy is rendered,” it said.

According to assistant deputy minister of departmental oversight at PSPC Catherine Poulin, the Edmonton Police Service’s investigation into GHI played a role in the decision to suspend the company.

“We have gone through multiple sources of information, including lawsuits … and the information that has been brought to our attention recently concerning an Edmonton Police Services investigation kind of put us at the right level of threshold to take action under the policy,” Poulin told a parliamentary committee.

Most recently there was the issue of GHI sharing a post office box with a cocaine smuggler in Edmonton, which came to light earlier this month.

Boissonnault co-founded the company with Stephen Anderson in 2020 while he was temporarily out of office after losing his seat in the 2019 election. He resigned from the company in 2021 after he regained his seat, however, he remained a 50% shareholder in the company until June of this year. Continue…

A court has ruled that a class action lawsuit launched against the provincial government of British Columbia on behalf of “all unionized” public servant workers in the province who faced persecution resulting from COVID mandates can proceed.

The court case will be heard in April of 2025, noted the British Columbia Public Servants Employees for Freedom (BCPSEF), a non-profit organization that assists public service workers in the province.

“Since October 2021, BCPS Employees for Freedom (BCPSEF) has led a campaign in defense of medical privacy and bodily autonomy on behalf of all public servants and our fellow British Columbians. This has involved raising awareness about the provincial government’s harmful proof of COVID-19 vaccination policy and undertaking a series of legal actions,” said the group in a press release.

“Our legal campaigns are a critical, precedent-setting fight to ensure the preservation of all workers’ employment and Charter rights in British Columbia and Canada for generations to come.”

The class action was initially brought forth by Plaintiff Jason Baldwin’s, with the BCPSEF explaining that now the “Baldwin class action has been merged together with a separate class action claim by unionized B.C. healthcare workers that is being supported by @UHCWBC.”

Northvolt would require between $1 billion and $1.2 billion in fresh funding to stabilize its finances and survive the bankruptcy, according to Carlsson.

The Quebec project had already been delayed for nearly a year while it underwent a strategic review of its future operations after receiving $7.2 billion worth of taxpayer money.

As a Generation X kid who grew up during the Cold War, fear of nuclear war is still a deeply ingrained instinct. We read Alas Babylon in school and saw The Day After to give us a sense of what a nuclear apocalypse might be like. Everyone understood it was the summum malum, the end of civilization as we know it.

The fear of nuclear war did not stop all conflict during the Cold War, but it did ensure that conflicts were limited. During that tense time, there were no world wars or sustained fighting between the nuclear powers themselves. Instead, wars took place among proxies far from the territory of the superpowers, such as the wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan.

A few decades after the end of the Cold War—during which no one was particularly worried about a nuclear war—a new conflict with Russia has arisen due to major disagreements about the nature of the international order and our respective places within it. What began in 2014 as a limited confrontation between Russia and a western-backed Ukraine has evolved into an enormous conventional war.

After the West increased its support to Ukraine following Russia’s 2022 invasion, there was some recognition among western leaders about the dangers of provocation. Even so, such risk has increased in an incremental fashion. At first, western leaders thought it was too much to provide tanks, but soon the West relented, and the Ukrainians received M1 Abrams and Leopard II tanks.

Then, there was a lot of hemming and hawing about providing F-16 fighter jets. This surprised me, as they are not materially better than Ukraine’s MiG-29s, but, apparently, one of the Russian objections was that F-16s can carry nuclear armaments and risk confusion about western intentions. But now Ukraine has these as well.

We have since crossed the last phase line. Having provided Ukraine the Storm Shadow and ATACMS medium-range missiles, we have now authorized their use against Russian territory, in spite of increasingly desperate Russian warnings. After this authorization, Ukraine promptly fired them into Russian territory. The day one plan would add 10 percent duty on top of the tariffs Trump already has planned for Chinese products, and a 25 percent tariff on all products coming in through Canada and Mexico.

Trump said on Nov. 25 that the three countries have not done enough to help the United States stem illegal immigration and the entry of illicit drugs.

Over the past two administrations, including Trump’s first term, Beijing has made a number of promises to help curb the movement of illicit fentanyl but kept few of them.

Fentanyl is an FDA-approved synthetic opioid used to treat severe pain, such as in open-heart surgery, or epidurals for mothers in labor.

Illicit fentanyl, however, is often mixed with other drugs, and illicit drug makers are increasingly producing analogs, or drugs similar to fentanyl, with small molecular changes that can make the drug up to 100 times more deadly.

Fentanyl is already a potent drug—2 milligrams is enough to be a lethal dose depending on a person’s size.

Illicit fentanyl and its various analogs have been linked to nearly 400,000 deaths in the United States since 2016. European NATO members will not be able to keep Ukraine’s military supplied if US President-elect Donald Trump stops aid, Bloomberg has warned.

Kiev has used up its pre-conflict stocks of Soviet-era equipment and become dependent on the West for materiel, according to the outlet. The US has been the leading provider of military supplies, while the EU has handed over more cash.

“Kiev will be left at Russia’s mercy” without US weapons, Poland’s deputy foreign minister, Marek Prawda was quoted by the outlet as saying.

Whatever Trump does about Ukraine doesn’t change the fact that “we are entering a more transactional world and we need to mobilize ourselves to fit into that logic,” Prawda reportedly added.

Canada’s population-adjusted violent and property crime rate has now surpassed the United States, and the gap is growing, according to the most recently available crime statistics.

The Fraser Institute “pre-released” a chapter for an upcoming study which found that Canada’s homicide, property crime and violent crime rates per 100,000 people are on the rise, with the latter two metrics now surpassing its southern neighbours.

According to the study, which used Federal Bureau of Investigation and Bureau of Justice statistics and Canadian reported crime data, both countries showed a “dramatic” long-term decline in property and violent crime rates after the 1990s till 2014. After 2014, however, Canada began to see a rise in crime rates, reversing progress.

The study found that from 2014 to 2022 when the latest crime statistics were available, the violent crime rate, such as murder, robbery, and assault with a weapon, in Canada increased by 43.8% to 434.1 violent crimes per 100,000 people.

This means that Canada now has a 14% higher population-adjusted violent crime rate than the U.S., which saw a violent crime increase of 5.3% over the same period, with 380.7 crimes per 100,000 people.

While America’s property crime rate, including burglary, theft, and motor vehicle theft, decreased by 24.1% between 2014 and 2024, with 1954.4 crimes per 100,000 people, Canada’s property crime rate increased by 7%, with 2491 crimes per the same metric. Continue…

Canadians are increasingly taking on debt as the country’s high cost of living persists, leading to more missed loan and credit card payments.

Consumer debt in Canada hit a record high in the third quarter of this year, up 4.1% compared to 2023.

Consumer debt hit $2.5 trillion in the third quarter of this year, according to TransUnion’s Q3 2024 Credit Industry Insights report published on Tuesday.

Serious delinquencies, meaning an account with a missed payment of 90 days or more were also up nearly 2%, compared to Q3 2023.

“Consumers are just not able to keep current on all their payments in all their cases so we are seeing delinquencies creep up a bit,” said Matt Fabian, researcher and consultant with TransUnion.

The credit agency said that inflation, high housing costs and the price of groceries have placed a great deal of strain on Canadians’ ability to pay their bills, particularly Millennial and Gen Z consumers.

“The cost of living is higher and interest rates are higher, so I think that creates a payment shock for a lot of Canadians who all of a sudden things are less affordable and the cost of covering your debt becomes a little more expensive,” added Fabian. Continue…

Small businesses oppose the Liberals’ two-month GST/HST tax break, citing unaffordable administrative costs and poor timing.

According to the Canadian Federation of Independent Businesses, three-quarters of businesses say implementing the holiday will be costly and complicated because they have to reprogram their point-of-sale systems to implement the tax.

The non-profit business advocacy group surveyed 3,591 small businesses between Nov. 26 and 27.

“A majority of small firms oppose the planned GST/HST holiday – and this rises to 62% among those required to implement it,” said Dan Kelly, CFIB president. “Only 4% of small business owners believe they will have stronger sales as a result, with 66% of respondents suggesting it will simply shift sales into the tax holiday period.”

The Conservatives voted against the Liberal-NDP coalition’s two-month HST/GST tax break, which also plans to hand out $250 cheques to approximately 18.7 million Canadians. Combining the GST tax cut and cheques, the plan will cost more than $6.2 billion, not including the HST cut.

“This isn’t a tax cut. This is an inflationary, two-month temporary tax trick that will drive up the cost of living,” said Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre.

Canada’s debt officially doubled on Aug. 30, reaching $1.232 trillion — a result of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau spending more during his tenure than every other prime minister before him combined.

Workers detected more than 40 gold veins, which contained around 330 tons (300 metric tons) of gold down to a depth of 6,600 feet (2,000 meters). However, using 3D computer models, mining experts have predicted that there could be up to 1,100 tons (1,000 metric tons) of gold — roughly eight times heavier than the Statute of Liberty — hidden at depths of up to 9,800 feet (3,000 m).

A coalition of major Canadian legacy media outlets is suing OpenAI, accusing the tech company of using its news articles to train ChatGPT without the collective’s permission.

The Canadian corporate press outlets include the CBC, Post Media, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, Toronto Star and Toronto Star. They have submitted a statement of claim against OpenAI to the Superior Court of Justice on Friday.

According to the claim, the legacy media coalition alleged that OpenAI is “severally liable” for Copyright Act infringements by using the company’s intellectual property, news articles, to train its artificial intelligence software ChatGPT.

They alleged that the tech company and its conglomerates have “unjustly enriched themselves at the expense of the News Media Companies” and have breached the company’s terms of service by copying its articles for the alleged use.

The group is demanding OpenAI pay $20,000 per article it used without consent, with more for damages to be determined by the court, if the suit is successful.

A New Brunswick court has ruled that Aboriginal title, or the legal means by which Indigenous people claim property, can be used on privately held land in the Canadian province if indigenous nations go through the government to do so. The court decided the ruling earlier this month and it may set the precedent of Aboriginal title being used to sweep up privately owned property.

On November 14, Justice Kathryn Gregory of the Court of King’s Bench ruled in connection to a lawsuit made by six Wolastoqey Nations that sought Aboriginal title claims for over 50 percent of the land in the province of New Brunswick. Great swaths of land in the area are owned by oil as well as timber companies, per the Canadian Press.

Gregory ruled that several companies who were the defendants in the suit were to be removed and that the legal dispute would only be between the Canadian government and indigenous nations. A man was nearly cremated alive in India after three doctors mistakenly declared him dead, The Logical Indian reported November 23.

After waking up on the funeral pyre, 25-year-old Rohitash Kumar was immediately rushed back to the hospital in Rajasthan, India. He died a day later from the condition that initially hospitalized him.

Both deaf and mute, Kumar had been staying at a home for the mentally impaired.

When he began experiencing epileptic seizures, he was rushed to the hospital.

After seemingly succumbing to his condition, three doctors declared him dead without conducting a proper post-mortem examination.

“There were no near relatives of his present,” Jhunjhunu SP Sharad Chouodhary said, according to The Indian Express.

“The doctors were supposed to do a postmortem of the youth, but they did not do anything. The doctors just fulfilled the paper formalities and sent the man for cremation. When the body was kept on the pyre, he woke up.”

Kumar had reportedly spent the three hours prior to his near-cremation in a freezing cold morgue, the U.K.’s Daily Mail reported.

The National Post of Canada reported the shocking figure on Friday, citing U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) data.

President-elect Donald Trump has been discussing tightening security at the northern border, which shocked some, as the southern border is normally the one being scrutinized.

On Monday, Trump threatened to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico if they did not take more action to protect the U.S. border.
