Free speech crises loom with crackdown on Israel criticism

The incoming Trump team appears poised to take a hardline and Congress isn't far behind. And it's just not on college campuses.

As one administration exits and another takes form, a harsh reality is becoming clear for critics of maintaining U.S. support for the Israeli government: in government bureaucracies and university campuses alike, crackdowns and pressure on free expression and assembly will continue in force.

Precisely how the incoming Trump administration will handle such criticism remains to be seen — but views expressed by his congressional allies and recent cabinet picks suggest a further diversion from upholding freedoms of speech and assembly in the name of maintaining support for Israel's war on Gaza and beyond.

Most recently, Trump selected Pam Bondi as his new nominee for attorney general. Last year, Bondi told Newsmax that students demonstrating in support of Hamas should be deported, whether they are here on student visas or as American citizens.

“Frankly, they need to be taken out of our country,” Bondi said. "Or, the FBI needs to be interviewing them right away.”

Trump himself echoed similar sentiments on the campaign trail, telling a group of donors in May that he would “throw out” any student that protests for Palestine and calling on the Biden administration to revoke the visas of foreign nationals who “support Hamas.”

Trump’s congressional allies have echoed the same sentiments in recent weeks. In October, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-La.) met with members of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) during which he threatened to revoke accreditation to universities that allow purported pro-Hamas or anti-Israel sentiment. Scalise discussed the various “levers” and “tools” by which the government can crack down on universities, even threatening their existence altogether.

“Clearly this administration doesn’t care, but if you get an administration that actually says ‘we’re not going to play the game anymore,’ there’s a lot of levers and tools that will get [universities’] attention, day one,” Scalise said. “Your accreditation is one the line, you’re not playing games anymore or else you’re not a school anymore.”

The hour-long meeting was framed as a discussion about antisemitism, but no one present attempted to differentiate between prejudice against Jews and criticism of the Israeli government and its actions. Scalise also slammed Jewish students who criticize Israel, asserting that they “just feel guilty that they’re alive.”

The FBI has leveraged the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) to turn banks into information sources by flagging millions of legal transactions as “suspicious.” The BSA mandates that financial institutions keep detailed records of significant cash transactions and report any activities that could hint at illegal activities like money laundering or tax evasion.

In 2023, banks filed 4.6 million Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs), a notable rise from previous years. These SARs are used by the FBI for monitoring and investigating potentially suspicious activities.

The FBI takes these reports further by “data mining” them and demanding additional personal details from banks, such as emails, phone numbers, and app data. This deep dive into personal data can track everyday activities like grocery purchases and Uber receipts.

Following the events of January 6, 2021, the FBI requested banks to flag individuals who traveled to Washington, D.C., bought firearms, or booked hotels. Bank of America handed over information on 211 customers, and other banks flagged transactions at airports, Bass Pro Shops, and Starbucks. Even purchasing a coffee near D.C. could get someone flagged.

Looking forward, the government is urging banks to use artificial intelligence (AI) to track spending habits. This AI could potentially flag political donations, religious book purchases, and other personal transactions. Currently, about 27,000 government agents access this financial data daily without needing a warrant, raising significant privacy concerns.

A 60-year-old woman who watched “too much MSNBC” left bomb threats at two different Trump properties, one in Florida and the other in Nevada.

“There is a bomb I left on the site. Hopefully you will get everyone evacuated, except for Trump.”

Because of a plea deal, she and her lawyers thought she would be sentenced to probation. But the judge didn’t agree and, because of two assassination attempts on Trump’s life since her arrest, sentenced her to a year in federal prison.

Here’s the report:

A 60-year-old manicurist with no criminal history will spend a year in federal prison for threatening to kill President-elect Donald Trump — a crime her attorney blamed on exposure to too much cable news.

Martha Jane Schoenfeld left voicemails in June threatening to detonate bombs at two of Trump’s properties in Florida and Nevada. In exchange for her guilty plea, prosecutors recommended she be sentenced to one year of probation in lieu of prison.

Schoenfeld and her attorney agreed. Trump, notified of the plea bargain like all federal crime victims are supposed to be, did too.

The judge did not.

U.S. District Judge Raag Singhal took the rare step Tuesday of exceeding prosecutors’ recommended penalty. Made wary by the two assassination attempts on Trump that followed Schoenfeld’s arrest, he sentenced the Boca Raton woman to 13 months in federal prison instead.

Schoenfeld apologized Tuesday for the bomb threats, which she said she had neither the means nor the desire to carry out. According to prosecutors, Schoenfeld made the threats in voicemails to the Trump International Golf Club in suburban West Palm Beach and Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas on June 6.

“There is a bomb I left on the site,” she said in one. “Hopefully you will get everyone evacuated, except for Trump.”

Faced with the possibility of 20 years in federal prison, Schoenfeld pleaded guilty to one of two threat-related charges in September — forgoing her right to a trial by jury but ensuring that prosecutors would recommend she be spared from prison.

“This was a lady in a condo that was watching too much MSNBC and got carried away,” her defense attorney Mark McMann said Wednesday. “We agreed the probation and the embarrassment was enough. She’s been through enough.”

This tells you something about both the graciousness of President-elect Trump, who was fine with probation, and the insanity that comes from watching too much of a news channel that called Trump a Nazi and claimed democracy would end if Trump won the election.

And it tells us something good about the judge who, in case you were wondering, was appointed by President Trump.

I was in Syria in early 2011 studying Arabic. I left the country in early March barely two weeks before the outbreak in Daraa.

I hate to be the bearer of bad tidings, but that asshole is still alive somewhere, probably on some island

beach. I knew it the moment I saw this story. How? You are about to find out.

The first clue is that police released footage immediately to the press, so I knew the police and press

were in on the fake. If this were real they wouldn't be airing it to the public within hours. It would be

considered a snuff film.

The second clue is that CEOs of big healthcare companies like this are not walking around by

themselves on the streets of Manhattan at night. Precisely for this reason. You will say this was in the

morning, but we can see from footage it was still dark (about half an hour before sunrise). Tony Fauci

and Albert Bourla are known to have heavy security, and we may assume the same for Brian

Thompson.

The third clue is that the film looks fake. The guy playing Thompson is a bad actor and his reactions

are comical. Plus, notice what no one else has: the SUV right there hits its brake lights and leaves them

on right as the film starts. What does that mean? It means AAAANNNDD. . . ACTION!
