Microsoft Accuses Google of Running ‘Shadow Campaigns’ in Europe to Influence Regulators

Microsoft has publicly accused its longtime rival Google of running “shadow campaigns” in Europe aimed at discrediting the software giant with regulators and misleading the public.

CNBC reports that Microsoft has openly accused Google of engaging in covert operations to undermine the company’s reputation with European regulators and the public. In a blog post published on Monday, Microsoft lawyer Rima Alaily alleged that Google hired a firm to recruit European cloud companies to represent the search giant’s case against Microsoft.

According to Alaily, Google has gone to great lengths to conceal its involvement, funding, and control over what she described as an “astroturf group” designed to discredit Microsoft with competition authorities, policymakers, and the public. The group, called the Open Cloud Coalition, is allegedly being launched this week with the backing of Google and a handful of European cloud providers serving as its public face.

Microsoft claims that one company, which declined to participate in the coalition, informed them that the group would receive financial support from Google and criticize Microsoft’s practices in Europe. Alaily also linked to a flyer for the Open Cloud Coalition, which states that the consortium is being formed to advocate for a fair, competitive, and open cloud services industry across the UK and EU.

Google, however, maintains that it has been very public about its concerns with Microsoft’s cloud licensing practices. A Google Cloud spokesperson stated, “We and many others believe that Microsoft’s anticompetitive practices lock-in customers and create negative downstream effects that impact cybersecurity, innovation, and choice.”

This conflict represents a fresh battle between the two tech giants, which compete in various sectors, including cloud infrastructure, online advertising, and productivity software. Google is currently facing increased regulatory scrutiny in both Europe and the United States, where it is in the midst of its second antitrust trial brought by the Justice Department.

ICJ genocide case: South Africa files 750-page evidence against Israel

South Africa on Monday filed a detailed submission to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) outlining evidence of Israel’s alleged violation of the 1948 Genocide Convention in its ongoing war on Gaza.

According to the South African presidency, the submission, also called a memorial, includes 750 pages of evidence of acts of genocide and genocidal intent.

"The evidence will show that undergirding Israel’s genocidal acts is the special intent to commit genocide, a failure by Israel to prevent incitement to genocide, to prevent genocide itself and its failure to punish those inciting and committing acts of genocide," a statement by the presidency said.

It added that the evidence is presented in more than 750 pages of text, in addition to over 4,000 pages of annexes.

"South Africa’s Memorial is a reminder to the global community to remember the people of Palestine, to stand in solidarity with them and to stop the catastrophe. The devastation and suffering has been possible only because despite the ICJ and numerous UN bodies’ actions and interventions, Israel has failed to comply with its international obligations,” it said.

BEAST SYSTEM: Israel to hire U.S.-based biometrics firm to screen Palestinians in Gaza

A new "Uber for war zones" scheme was unveiled by Israel this week to start screening, Holocaust-style, every Palestinian in the Gaza Strip.

According to reports, Israel plans to hire a private, U.S.-based logistics and security suite to develop a "gated community" in Gaza where all Palestinians would be subject to biometric screenings in order to qualify to receive aid.

Israel's war cabinet discussed the proposal over the weekend with plans to approve a "pilot" program within the next two months. Global Delivery Company (GDC), a company run by Israeli-American businessman Mordechai Kahana, is currently in talks with Israel to run the biometrics screening program.

For a while now, Israel has been contemplating the creation of so-called "humanitarian bubbles" in northern Gaza, including in and around the Jabalia refugee camp which, for the past three weeks, has been under total siege. Israel is not allowing any food, clean water or medical supplies to enter Jabalia, which is creating a humanitarian crisis.

Back in January, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) issued an interim ruling that Israel must take immediate measures to ensure that the Palestinians living in Gaza receive basic services and humanitarian assistance. In response, Israel has come up with this biometrics screening scheme as a prerequisite for receiving aid.

GDC has been profiting from war for 14 years

It was Kahana himself who came up with the phrase "Uber for war zones" to describe his for-profit business. GDC has been operating this business for the past 14 years during which it operated in and profited from five wars, including in Afghanistan, Iraq, Gaza, Syria and Ukraine.

"Personnel working for our security sub-contractor are trained and equipped for non-lethal and lethal methods of crowd control," reads a GDC press release from this week. "They are trained to use deadly force only as a last resort if their lives are in danger."

One of GDC's former top officials, Stuart Seldowitz, is also a former U.S. government official who was charged with a hate crime after he abused a street food vendor. While Seldowitz no longer works for GDC, Kahana says he is still open to working with the guy.

In a public notice, the U.S. Capitol Police stated, “EXERCISE: This evening, the United States Capitol Police & our federal partners are conducting a routine training exercise on the grounds of the U.S. Capitol. Please do not be alarmed if you see emergency vehicles and low flying helicopters.”

This exercise took place one week after the Capitol Police conducted a campus-wide evacuation drill.

“EXERCISE: This morning, at approximately 10:00 am, we will have a campus-wide evacuation exercise. The routine drill is in coordination with our Legislative Branch partners. Expect temporary street closures to include Constitution Avenue, Independence Avenue, and D Street, NE,” Capitol police wrote on Monday, October 21.

The timing of this exercise, coming just as the 2024 elections approach, has raised alarms among some conservative leaders, including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). Greene has issued a stark warning about what she believes is a calculated move by Democrats to secure control over the Capitol ahead of January 6, the date designated for certification of the presidential election.

In a statement to her supporters,Greene argued that the Democrats are ramping up security measures in Washington, not to protect the people, but to further entrench their hold on the government should they lose seats in the House. Read Rep. Greene’s statement below:
