UK's National Grid Admits It Doesn't Have A Clue How To Reach Net Zero

A few weeks ago, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband and his Head of Mission Control, Chris Stark wrote a public letter to Fintan Slye of the National Grid ESO asking for practical advice on how to deliver a clean power grid by 2030.

The letter asked Slye to set out a range of pathways to enable a decarbonised power system by 2030. For each pathway they asked for the forecast energy generation and demand mix and the underlying assumptions that need to be met for these to be deliverable. They also asked for the key requirements for the transmission network and interconnectors and for a high-level assessment of the costs, benefits, opportunities, challenges and risks as well as the key actions to be taken by Government, NESO, Ofgem and industry to enable delivery of the pathways.

Recently, Fintan Slye took to X to announce his initial response. Strangely Slye’s letter is not addressed to Miliband or Stark, but takes the form of an open letter to industry.

The letter starts off with warm words announcing the formation of a “cross-cutting delivery unit” that will report back to Government by the end of Autumn 2024, less than three months away. It says its plan will be:

A whole systems spatial view of what is required to deliver a clean, secure, operable electricity system by 2030. The plan will consider possible clean energy generation mixes and their associated network, market and operability requirements, referred to as pathways.

That sounds good as far as it goes.

However, the letter then goes on to say that all pathways will “meet clean power in 2030 against a definition to be agreed with U.K. Government.”

In other words, there is no agreed definition of what a zero-carbon grid by 2030 actually means. It does not know what the target is. It seems that Miliband and Labour have set the country on a journey without properly defining the destination. And the initial request from Miliband and Stark reveals they don’t know how to get there. It’s the blind leading the blind to an unknown destination.

"At various critical inflection points in history, members of our government have engaged in trading at a time which their conflicts are called into question," former enforcement attorney with the Securities and Exchange Commission Ron Geffner told the Post.

The DOJ is accusing Visa of suppressing competition by threatening merchants with high fees and paying off potential rivals.

"Visa's unlawful conduct affects not just the price of one thing, but the price of nearly everything," Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement, noting merchants and banks pass payment network costs to consumers.

Rep. Pelosi has a net worth in the nine figures thanks to her and her husband's stock portfolio, the Post reported.

Further, Rep. Pelosi has pushed back on bipartisan-proposed bans to prevent lawmakers and their spouses from trading stock, given the potential for conflict of interest, according to the Post.

Ernst noted the country will need "a change in administration" to keep jobs in the United States.

Judge Cannon Gets Case of Alleged Would-Be Trump Assassin

Originally charged on two gun counts, Routh is now also charged with attempted assassination of a political candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and a third gun charge. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison if he's convicted.

Cannon was selected from a random draw of 10 federal judges, Politico reported.

Cannon dismissed the classified documents case in July, ruling that Smith was illegally appointed special counsel by the Justice Department. That ruling is being appealed.

(Reuters) -The U.S. is investigating German software firm SAP, U.S. IT services provider Carahsoft Technology, and others in a civil probe for potentially conspiring to overcharge government agencies over the course of a decade, Bloomberg News reported late Tuesday.

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) lawyers have been investigating since at least 2022 whether SAP illegally conspired with Carahsoft to fix prices on sales to the U.S. military and other parts of the government, Bloomberg said, citing federal court documents filed in Baltimore.

The Committee also cites failures in the aftermath of the assassination attempt, noting that "key requests to FBI, DHS, ATF and USSS remain outstanding. The majority of documents provided by the USSS and DHS are heavily redacted. This has unnecessarily hindered the Committee’s ability to carry out its constitutional authority to investigate and acquire information necessary to identify needed reforms. These overly burdensome redactions, including of communications related to the same individuals who the Committee interviewed, only served to delay the Committee’s ability to conduct these interviews and carry out its investigation efficiently and effectively."

The failures listed by the Committee are substantial and include failures to "clearly define responsibilities for planning and security at the July 13 rally," "to ensure the AGR building was effectively covered," "to effectively coordinate with state and local law enforcement," "to provide resources for the July 13 rally that could have enhanced security," "to communicate information about the suspicious person to key personnel," and failure "to take action to ensure the safety of former President Trump."
