Teihiihan – The Little Cannibals of the Plains

Among the most dreaded figures in the lore of the Plains Indians were child-sized dwarves who were incredibly strong, very aggressive, bloodthirsty, and often attacked in large numbers.

“Teihiihan” comes from the Arapaho word meaning “strong.” The Arapaho also called them Hecesiiteihii, meaning “little people.”

These small, fearsome warriors were said to be so aggressive because they believed they had to be killed in battle to reach the afterlife.

These small creatures dwell in the vast area of the Great Plains, between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains. They are known in the legends of the Cheyenne, Crow, Arapaho, Omaha, Osage, Kanza, Shoshone, Comanche, Ponca, and Gros Ventre.

Descriptions of these mini-monsters vary from tribe to tribe. Among some Siouan tribes, including the Osage, Omaha, and Kanza, they are said to sometimes have wings, and the Omaha further say that they have only one eye. The Crow sees them with pot bellies and no necks.

Among the Omaha and Ponka, they were called Gada’zhe, meaning Wild People, who hunted with bows and poisoned arrows and were said to have been able to produce wounds under the skin without breaking the flesh.

Among most of the Plains Indians, these tiny warriors are described to be about 2-4 feet tall, are dark-skinned, have squat necks and sharp teeth, and can run very vastly far outpacing their human counterparts. They are almost always hostile to human beings and are gluttonous, killing more people than they can possibly eat.

The Wild People have magical powers and can be dangerous, sometimes kidnapping children or using witchcraft to harm people. Some legends say that they have the power to turn themselves invisible.

According to most versions of the story, the race of cannibal dwarves was destroyed in an ancient war by the Arapaho and their allied tribes.

These dwarves are called by a multitude of names, including:

Gada’zhe by the Omaha and Ponca

Mi’-a-gthu-shka by the Osage

Nimerigar by the Shoshone

Nirumbee by the Crow

Nunnupi by the Comanche

If there is one economic dynamic we have talked about on these pages more than the rest, its inflation. {Background}

The root causes of inflation are two-fold, monetary policy and energy policy. However, when combined they represent a predictable outcome. Specifically predictable, when it comes to highly consumable goods that require a lot of industrial effort, labor, distribution and warehousing processes. Thus, food inflation was/is worst.

Within all of the sectors most vulnerable to upward price pressure as a result of policy (monetary and energy),the main industry impacted by immediate and severe inflation is food, farming and agriculture. Food, a highly consumable product with a thin supply chain, sees the results of inflation first and fastest. Durable good inflation lags behind high-velocity consumable goods.

It was with this understanding CTH first warned in 2020 of what would happen coming out of the COVID Pandemic economic crisis. We predicted and watched in 2020 as one-third of all food supplies were destroyed because 50% of the food supply chain (restaurants, cafeterias, schools, food trucks, essentially food away from home) was shuttered.

In the middle and latter part of 2020, the retail food supply chain (grocery stores), normally representing 50% of total caloric consumption, struggled to keep pace with massively increased demand on that side of the food supply. The agricultural supply chain was completely screwed up in the USA when half of the normal food distribution (wholesale food away from home) was blocked from their business model. The resulting impacts were entirely predictable for those who did not pretend. We warned, and it happened exactly as we anticipated.

Then, making the predictive nature of food pricing more obvious, we watched as the Build Back Better or Green New Deal was thrust upon the entire western world dynamic. This BBB/GND energy policy shift intentionally and purposefully exploded the cost of manufacturing and distributing food. With massive and immediate increases in energy prices, the price of food skyrocketed quickly; because the impacts are fast in this sector.

Over the next several years the prices of food continued going up as the increased energy cost embedded within the agriculture sector. Nothing about the price of food, or the ancillary processes within the industry, will change unless and until energy costs retreat.In essence, with higher energy costs, food prices stay high; they are directly connected.

No other facet to food inflation is more substantial than the cost of energy to produce the product. Farming and agriculture are energy dependent from fertilizer to farming equipment, fuel, processing, packaging, transportation, warehousing, storage, climate controls in distribution etc, everything is dependent on energy pricing.

High energy costs are why food prices (inflation) would always stay high, regardless of what happens in other sectors. CTH talked about this at length long before the impacts came over the horizon. We talked about preparing our families to offset this issue, but there is only so much you can do.

We are all currently feeling the intense increase in prices at the market, grocery store and supermarket, and the worst aspect to this dynamic is the reality that as long as energy prices remain high, food prices will never drop. [NOTE: There is a smaller supply/demand impact; however, with most of the USA agricultural sector exporting food products (multinational corporations ie. Big Ag) the domestic USA supply is subject to globalized pricing.]

Bottom line. As long as energy prices remain high, food prices will remain high.

The “great reset” per se’, was not a process that began after the pandemic. The pandemic was the beginning, ushering in the “great reset” by being the starting point of the mostly western, global energy shift.

Into this dynamic there is good news, one voice has clear eyes on the problem, and as a consequence, answers.President Donald Trump understands the nature of how the current price pressures that are crushing the middle-class can be reversed and removed. WATCH:

Exclusive: Citizens United Releasing Film on ‘Trump’s Rescue Mission,’ Exposing Kamala Harris’s ‘Radical’ Record

Citizens United Productions is releasing a film on Monday titled Trump’s Rescue Mission: Saving America, featuring exclusive interviews with former President Donald Trump, his running mate Sen. JD Vance (R-OH), and many more top conservatives, aimed at exposing Vice President Kamala Harris’s radical agenda.

Citizens United’s Dave Bossie provided Breitbart News with an exclusive first look at the film before it came out for this review, and in it Bossie and the all-star cast of major characters including Trump and Vance rip Harris to shreds. The film opens with Bossie describing how Harris “skyrocketed in politics from her start as a radical San Francisco liberal.”

After cutting to Harris admitting she is in fact a “radical,” Bossie explains how she launched from there to the U.S. Senate where she became the most liberal U.S. Senator per a 2019 analysis from the nonpartisan GovTrack.

“She’s to the left of Bernie Sanders supporting policies described as Communism,” Bossie says.

The film features interviews with Trump, Vance, businessman Vivek Ramaswamy, Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD), Reps. Jim Jordan (R-OH), Ronny Jackson (R-TX), Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL), Mike Waltz (R-FL), and Byron Donalds (R-FL), as well as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and former Trump administration officials such as former Office of Management and Budget (OMB) director Russ Vought, former acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker, former intelligence official Kash Patel, former State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus, former White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow, and former border official Tom Homan. Former Democrat Rep. Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, who left the Democrat party, also appears in the film.

“This is the story of an election the likes of which the world has never seen, where Vice President Harris was installed by party elites to replace a failing Joe Biden,” Bossie says in the film. “Donald Trump was riding high coming off the debate, his rallies swelling to record numbers. A second President Trump term was looking inevitable. And then the unthinkable.”

The film then cuts to Trump getting shot in Pennsylvania.

The storyline goes through the arc of the presidential race from earlier 2024 when outgoing President Joe Biden, the incumbent Democrat who was running for reelection until he collapsed in the debate, dropped out of the race and Democrats hastily replaced him with Harris despite the fact Harris got no votes.

“Kamala definitely covered up his cognitive decline,” Trump says of Harris hiding Biden’s issues.

“It was a rapid decline that really seemed to take place,” Trump says. “It was noticed right after we had a debate.”

The film then walks through what happened with Trump getting shot at the Butler, Pennsylvania, rally.

“They accused Donald Trump of being a threat to democracy,” Vance says. “He literally took a bullet for democracy running his third presidential campaign.”

The movie then proceeds to systemically dismantle Harris’s extremely radical agenda.

“I think she’s terrified of letting the American people see what she actually believes,” Vance says. “If you don’t have a teleprompter in front of Kamala Harris, maybe she just blurts out that she wants to defund the police.”

Cruz, who’s currently in a tight race for reelection in Texas, says that Harris’s record was proven in the U.S. Senate to be the most radically left of anyone in the chamber in her time there.

“The nonpartisan tracking agency GovTrack measured all 100 senators,” Cruz says. “Kamala Harris ranked as the single most liberal senator in America. Number 100 out of 100. Literally the furthest — to the left of Bernie Sanders, to the left of Elizabeth Warren. That’s where Kamala Harris is and was.”

Both Ramaswamy and Donalds rip apart Harris’s record on criminal justice.

“Don’t take my word for it,” Ramaswamy says. “Take Kamala Harris’s word. We clearly have two systems of justice in this country.”

“When it comes to how she feels about criminal justice, she’s one of the biggest flip-floppers in the country,” Donalds adds.

The film extensively quotes Harris in her own words saying very radical things on camera throughout her career, and also features these top Republicans tying her to the failures of the Biden administration.

“She owns the failures of the Biden administration,” Trump says. “She was a big part of the Biden administration.”

The film is streaming online from Citizens United and available beginning Monday.

NASA scholarships open for applications

The New Zealand Space Agency is calling for applications from post-graduate students interested in working on NASA projects in the US next year.

Deputy Head of the New Zealand Space Agency, Andrew Johnson said the New Zealand Space Scholarship programme offers students the opportunity to intern and work on space-related projects guided by NASA mentors and bring that experience back to New Zealand.

“Previous interns have gained hands-on experience in their fields of study and access to NASA’s advanced research facilities,” said Mr Johnson.

“It’s an invaluable experience for these students and the skills, knowledge and connections they bring home will help to strengthen and grow our science and space sectors.

“The New Zealand Space Scholarship programme is one way the government is helping to foster talented people working in space-related fields.”

The New Zealand Space Agency is looking for applications from post-graduate students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects.

Successful applicants will then be considered by NASA for 10 to 13-week internships at NASA’s Ames Research Center or Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 2025.

Each successful intern will be supported by the New Zealand Space Scholarship which will cover return airfares to the United States and accommodation costs, plus an allowance for living expenses.

New Zealand has supported more than 20 students to undertake internships at NASA’s Ames Research Center or the Jet Propulsion Laboratory since 2018 through the New Zealand Space Scholarship programme.

NASA astronaut Tracy C. Dyson completed a six-month research mission aboard the International Space Station on Monday, returning to Earth with Roscosmos cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub.

The trio departed the space station aboard the Soyuz MS-25 spacecraft at 4:36 a.m. EDT Monday, Sept. 23, making a safe, parachute-assisted landing at 7:59 a.m. (4:59 p.m. Kazakhstan time), southeast of the remote town of Dzhezkazgan, Kazakhstan.

While aboard the orbiting laboratory, Dyson conducted multiple scientific and technology activities including the operation of a 3D bioprinter to print cardiac tissue samples, which could advance technology for creating replacement organs and tissues for transplants on Earth.

Dyson also participated in the crystallization of model proteins to evaluate the performance of hardware that could be used for pharmaceutical production and ran a program that used student-designed software to control the station’s free-flying robots, inspiring the next generation of innovators.

Dyson launched on March 23 and arrived at the station March 25 alongside Roscosmos cosmonaut Oleg Novitskiy and spaceflight participant Marina Vasilevskaya of Belarus.

Novitskiy and Vasilevskaya were aboard the station for 12 days before returning home with NASA astronaut Loral O’Hara on April 6.

Spanning 184 days in space, Dyson’s third spaceflight covered 2,944 orbits of the Earth and a journey of 78 million miles as an Expedition 70/71 flight engineer.

Dyson also conducted one spacewalk of 31 minutes, bringing her career total to 23 hours, 20 minutes on four spacewalks.

Kononenko and Chub, who launched with O’Hara to the station on the Soyuz MS-24 spacecraft last September, spent 374 days in space on a trip of 158.6 million miles, spanning 5,984 orbits.

Kononenko completed his fifth flight into space, accruing a record of 1,111 days in orbit, and Chub completed his first spaceflight.

Following post-landing medical checks, the crew will return to the recovery staging city in Karaganda, Kazakhstan.

Dyson will then board a NASA plane bound for the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston.

(AFP) — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday arrived in the United States for a crucial visit to present Kyiv’s plan to end two and a half years of war with Russia. Zelensky will present his proposals — which he calls a “victory plan” — to President Joe Biden, as well as presidential hopefuls Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

The visit comes after a summer of intense fighting: with Moscow advancing fast in eastern Ukraine and Kyiv holding on to swathes of Russia’s Kursk region. (They just got destroyed in Kursk, and Russia has taken it back, the US knows this)

It also comes as Kyiv has for weeks pressed the West to allow it to use long-range weapons to strike targets deep inside Russia — so far to no avail. When they meet at the White House on Thursday, Zelensky is expected to try to convince Biden to change his mind.

On the first leg of his US visit, Ukraine’s president visited a factory in Pennsylvania on Sunday that produces badly needed 155mm artillery shells. “I began my visit to the United States by expressing my gratitude to all the employees at the plant,” Zelensky said Sunday in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

The post included photos of him shaking hands with workers at the plant, where he said production had been ramped up. “It is in places like this where you can truly feel that the democratic world can prevail,” he wrote.

He will next travel to New York and Washington.

Zelensky said the coming weeks would decide how more than 30 months of fighting that has killed thousands would end.“It is now being determined what the legacy of the current generation of states leaders will be. Those in the highest offices,” he said.

In comments before his trip, Zelensky said the United States and UK have not given Ukraine permission to use the long-range weapons as they fear escalation, but hinted he had not given up hope.“We have had some decisions in the history of our relationship with Biden — very interesting and difficult dialogues,” Zelensky said earlier this week, adding: “He later changed his point of view.”(Fuck Off Begger)

Moscow has said it considers such a go-ahead as NATO countries being “at war” with Russia.

A close adviser to Biden said this month that the US leader would use his remaining time in office to “put Ukraine in the best possible position to prevail.”

Zelensky has also said he plans to invite Russia to a possible second international peace summit in November.But Moscow this weekend said it would not attend and referred to President Vladimir Putin’s conditions to enter talks: that Ukraine surrender four of its regions.

“I think both are still betting on the possibility of a military victory,” UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres told CNN Sunday.

Moscow will respond when the Ukrainian leader’s proposal is forwarded through official channels, spokesman has said

There is so far too little information about Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s so-called ‘victory plan’ for Russia to be able to properly evaluate it, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday.

Zelensky announced last week that he had concluded work on a proposal that could end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine by the end of this year if the West makes “quick decisions”on boosting its support for Kiev.

The Ukrainian leader is currently in the US, where he plans to present his initiative to President Joe Biden, to members of Congress, and to both 2024 election presidential contenders – Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

When asked by journalists on Monday about Zelensky’s proposals, Peskov said that the authorities in Moscow “believe that it is impossible to conduct any analysis based on media reports.”

“If some information appears from official sources, of course we will study it,” he said.

At the moment, Russia has a “very reserved”attitude towards the Ukrainian leader’s initiative because “there is a lot of different information, including contradictory information, unreliable information” about it, Peskov explained.

On Sunday,Peskov was asked about the possible outcome of the conflict between Moscow and Kiev, replying that “there is no alternative to our [Russian] victory.”

In the low-lying reaches of Delaware, the land breathes with the ebb and flow of the tide. These tides support the marshes (tidal wetlands) lining much of Delaware Bay.

Marshes are one of several wetland types that together cover about one-quarter of Delaware—the second-smallest U.S. state.

These semi-aquatic ecosystems, which provide habitat for plants and animals, improve water quality, and help protect against flooding and erosion.

These images, acquired on September 3, 2024, with the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 8, show a segment of the region’s coastal wetlands in Delaware and New Jersey.

In the false-color image (right), open water appears dark blue, and low-lying areas inundated with water (marsh) appear dark blue-green.

Farther inland, the vegetation in agricultural, forested, and urban areas appears bright green.

Tidal wetlands lie at the intersection of land and water, where the shore meets an ocean, bay, river, or stream.

They regularly flood and drain with the rise and fall of the tides.

When these images were acquired at about 11:40 a.m. local time (15:40 Universal Time), waters in the vicinity of the Leipsic River were approaching high tide.

The Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge, centered in the images at the top of this page and shown in detail in the image above, protects 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) along the Delaware coast.

About 20 square miles of that area is tidal salt marsh—one of the largest remaining expanses of the ecosystem in the mid-Atlantic, according to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.

Salt marsh hay (Spartina patens) grows here, providing habitat for animals and shorebirds.

Bombay Hook is one in a series of refuges located along the Atlantic Flyway. In September, birdwatchers visiting the refuge can see late-migrating shorebirds and songbirds and the arrival of the season’s first Canada geese.

It’s also the time of year when tickseed sunflower, goldenrod, and Joe-Pye-weed are flowering.

Even protected tidal wetlands, however, can undergo marsh migration—a process in which rising sea levels drown a marsh and cause it to move inland. In 2021, researchers with NASA’s DEVELOP program used observations from several satellites to map Delaware’s marshes and project where these marshes are likely to migrate in the future.

They found that between 2010 and 2020, the state lost nearly 7 square miles of coastal marshes; however, some sites—especially toward the middle of the coastline—are suitable for future marsh migration.

Russia turns US-made missile launcher into ‘crater’ – MOD (VIDEO)

An Iskander missile has been used to destroy a HIMARS system in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, the report said

Russian forces have obliterated a US-made HIMARS launcher as well as its crew in Ukraine’s Sumy Region, Moscow’s Defense Ministry has claimed.

The strike took place overnight in a rural area, according to purported footage of the engagement released by the ministry on Sunday. It showed several vehicles driving down a road and stopping next to a large building, which was then wiped out by a powerful explosion.

The ministry said the site washit by an Iskander missile, which “left only a crater” in its wake. The location of the strike was identified as the village of Shaposhnikovo, roughly 10 km southwest of the regional capital Sumy and 45 km from the Russian border.

The largest Einstein Cross ever discovered dwells among a rare 'carousel' of galaxies

Astronomers have discovered seven distant galaxies aligned with a galaxy cluster; together, they form one of the most unique configurations of galaxies ever seen.

This arrangement of warped and stretched galaxies contains the largest "Einstein cross," in reference to repeated views of the same galaxy in the same image due to consequences of general relativity — namely, gravitational lensing.

The newly discovered, strongly lensed galaxies are collectively referred to as the "Carousel Lens."

The galaxies appear to be stretched and swirled in the Carousel Lens because of the influence of a so-called "lensing galaxy cluster," which is located closer to Earth at 5 billion light-years away.

Ultimately, this discovery could help solve some of the most pressing mysteries of cosmology.

Chief among these mysteries are the natures of dark energy, the invisible force accelerating the expansion of the universe, and dark matter, the invisible stuff that makes up 80% of the matter in the cosmos.

The seven unique galaxies are located at distances ranging from 7.6 billion to 12 billion light-years away from Earth.

This is close to the observing limit of the 13.8 billion-year-old cosmos, meaning we couldn't see further that this area even with the most advanced telescopes.

That's because because this region of space is accelerating away from us too quickly.

In the Carousel Lens, a number of galaxies also appear in more than one location.

Of particular interest to astronomers, dwelling in the Carousel Lens is an Einstein Cross created from four repeated occurrences of galaxy number 4 (4a, 4b, 4c, and 4d in the image below.

"This is an amazingly lucky 'galactic line-up' — a chance alignment of multiple galaxies across a line-of-sight spanning most of the observable universe," team member David Schlegel, a senior scientist in Berkeley Lab's Physics Division, said in a statement.

"Finding one such alignment is a needle in the haystack. Finding all of these is like eight needles precisely lined up inside that haystack."

These aspects of this galactic arrangement show the intricacies of a mind-blowing physics phenomenon called gravitational lensing, first suggested by Albert Einstein in 1915.

Gravitational lensing is a concept that arose from Einstein's most revolutionary theory, general relativity. Also referred to as the "geometric theory of gravity," general relativity superseded Isaac Newton's theory of gravity.

It suggests that the presence of mass in the fabric of space and time, united as a 4-dimensional entity called "spacetime," causes that fabric to be "warped."

A commonly used analogy for this is the placement of balls of increasing mass on a stretched rubber sheet. In this 2D analog, a golf ball causes more curvature than a ping-pong ball, a bowling ball creates more curvature than a golf ball, and a cannonball creates quite extreme curvature.

In spacetime, gravity arises from this curvature, so the larger an object's "warp," the larger its gravitational influence. Thus, planets have stronger gravity than moons, stars have stronger gravity than planets, and black holes have stronger gravity than all three.

This doesn't just explain the orbits of bodies around others with greater masses, but it also tells us something really interesting about how light is impacted by a spacetime warp.

Though light usually travels in a straight line, the curvature of the very fabric of spacetime changes the definition of what a straight line actually is.

To picture that, simply imagine drawing a straight line on a sheet of paper and then picking up that paper and rolling it in different orientations.

This all means that when an object of tremendous mass, like a cluster of galaxies, sits between Earth and a background source of light, it acts as a gravitational lens, shifting that background object's apparent position in the sky.

But, light from a single object can take different paths around the lensing body. The closer to the concentration of mass, the more the light will be diverted.

Kiev wants own Christian patriarchate

Kiev is working to obtain patriarchate status for the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU), a schismatic entity propped up by the Ukrainian government, according to Vladimir Zelensky.

Speaking to reporters on Saturday, the Ukrainian leader revealed he had discussed the matter with a delegation of hierarchs from the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople in late August. “I’ve said that our people, Ukrainians, would understand if our status was elevated to patriarchate. The canonical UOC has long faced competition from multiple rivaling unrecognized entities claiming to be the true Ukrainian church. During his ultimately failed re-election bid, Poroshenko touted the emergence of the new church as a major – if not the main – achievement of his term.

The OCU was recognized by the Patriarchate of Constantinople, a move that caused the Moscow Patriarchate to break ties with the body, thus causing a major schism in the Orthodox world.

With the beginning of the conflict between Kiev and Moscow, the UOC broke its ties to Moscow, declaring independence. This, however, did not spare it from the ever-growing pressure of the Ukrainian authorities, who have repeatedly accused it of still being linked to Russia.

Its property has been seized and handed over to the OCU, while its priests have been harassed by both nationalists and Ukrainian intelligence agencies.

Astronomers have cataloged a stunning treasure trove of over 500 of the universe's most powerful explosions.

These so-called gamma-ray bursts, or GRBs, are so energetic that if just one of them were to occur within 1,000 light-years of Earth, it could destroy our atmosphere with catastrophic results for life on our planet.

Fortunately, however, the closest GRB in this new clutch of 535 observations is 77 million light-years away from Earth.

The new catalog was created by a global army of 50 astronomers led by Maria Giovanna Dainotti of the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan using data from 455 telescopes across the Earth.

In terms of importance, the catalog could rival the Messier catalog of 110 deep sky objects created by French astronomer Charles Messier 250 years ago — a catalog still used by astronomers of all skill levels today.

"Our research enhances our understanding of these enigmatic cosmic explosions and showcases the collaborative effort across nations," Dainotti said in a statement.

"The result is a catalog akin to the one created by Messier 250 years ago, which classified deep-sky objects observable at that time."

Team member Alan Watson of the National Autonomous University of Mexico also emphasized the importance of the GRB catalog, hailing it as a "great resource" that could help "push the frontiers of our knowledge forward."

Lasting from a few milliseconds to several minutes, GRBs can be hundreds of times brighter than an average supernova, putting out more energy in mere seconds than the sun is capable of radiating over its lifetime of around 10 billion years.

Thus, when a GRB erupts, it briefly becomes the brightest source of electromagnetic radiation in the observable universe.

The first observation of a GRB came in the 1960s, but it wasn't until the 1970s when scientists were able to determine that these blasts of radiation were of cosmic origin.

Since then, scientists have used GRBs to study matter and physics that couldn't be replicated in labs here on Earth.

GRBs are divided into two main categories: long duration, lasting over two minutes and up to several hours, and short duration, lasting milliseconds to a couple of minutes.

Currently, astronomers think short-duration GRBs are caused when either two neutron stars or a neutron star and a black hole collide and merge.

Long-duration GRBs are believed to be launched when massive stars collapse to birth a black hole, causing jets of particles to race away from this scene of devastation at around 99.9% the speed of light.

Using 64,813 observations collected over 26 years, with notable contributions from the Swift satellites, the RATIR camera and the Subaru Telescope, this team built the largest catalog of GRBs to date — replete with 534 entries.

This allowed them to monitor how light from GRBs reaches Earth, which resulted in some surprises. In particular, the researchers found that over a quarter of GRBs, about 28% of the lot, did not generally change as their light raced through the universe.

GRBs that erupted billions of years ago in the early universe appearing similar to those that rage today.

This is an odd discovery in a universe with objects and events that have been changing over its 13.8 billion-year history.

"This phenomenon could indicate a very peculiar mechanism for how these explosions occur, suggesting that the stars linked to GRBs are more primitive than those born more recently,"

Dainotti explained. "However, this hypothesis still needs more investigation."

Some of the GRBs did evolve in optical light, however, in a way that also lined up with their development in X-ray radiation. These subjects were lightly easier to explain.

"Specifically, we are observing an expanding plasma composed of electrons and positrons that cools over time, and like a hot iron rod radiating redder and redder light as it cools, we do see a transition of the emission mechanism," team member Bruce Gendre of the University of the Virgin Islands said in the statement.

"In this case, this mechanism may be linked to the magnetic energy that powers these phenomena."

The researchers' next step will be to turn to the wider astronomical community and build on this impressive GRB catalog.

To that end, they have made the data available via an app called the Gamma Ray Bursts Optical Afterglow Repository.

"Adopting a standardized format and units, potentially linked to the International Virtual Observatory Alliance protocols, will enhance the consistency and accessibility of the data in this field," Gendre said.
